Chapter 95 - Episode 95 : Veridian Enclave

The Wild That Remembers

The flying Skiff descended through the clouds.

Below them stretched an ocean of green.

Not a forest.

Not merely a jungle.

A living world.

The canopy extended farther than the eye could see, broken only by enormous trees whose trunks were wider than ancient towers. Rivers wound through the vegetation like silver veins. Waterfalls disappeared beneath layers of leaves. Mist floated between the branches.

There were no obvious roads.

No walls.

No towers.

No great stone structures announcing the presence of civilization.

Yet Lirion's instruments were detecting Technomagik everywhere.

Not beneath the jungle.

Within it.

The roots were carrying energy.

The rivers were transporting resonance.

The trees themselves appeared to be part of the region's ancient Technomagik network.

Lirion stared at his readings.

Lirion: "This isn't a ruined civilization."

Dorion looked down.

Dorion: "I thought it was."

Lirion: "So did the Observatory."

He expanded the scanning display.

Lines of green energy appeared beneath the jungle.

Some followed rivers.

Others followed roots.

Several seemed to travel through living trees.

Lirion: "Their Technomagik system is biological."

Sorion watched the jungle below.

He could feel something.

Not one memory.

Thousands.

Animals.

Plants.

Hunters.

Children.

Elders.

Entire communities.

Everything was connected.

Sorion: "They're still here."

Valek looked toward him.

Valek: "The people?"

Sorion nodded.

Sorion: "And they know we're coming."

Bardin looked around the Skiff.

Bardin: "That's reassuring."

Dorion gave him a look.

Bardin: "Fine. That's not reassuring."

THE WILD CITY

The Skiff continued forward.

Eventually, they began noticing structures.

At first they thought they were natural formations.

Then they realized they were homes.

Entire settlements had been built into enormous trees.

Platforms surrounded the trunks.

Bridges made from living vines connected one tree to another.

Small houses rested among the branches.

Children moved across rope bridges.

Hunters returned from the jungle carrying bows, spears, and baskets filled with edible plants.

There were no paved streets.

The jungle itself was the city.

A massive waterfall descended beside one settlement.

Instead of redirecting it, the inhabitants had built their homes around it.

Water powered a series of rotating Technomagik wheels.

The wheels generated green energy that flowed into the surrounding trees.

Lirion stared.

Lirion: "They aren't controlling nature."

Sorion finished the thought.

Sorion: "They're cooperating with it."

The Skiff slowed.

Below them, hunters stopped what they were doing.

One looked upward.

Then another.

Then dozens.

Within seconds, the jungle settlement knew that strangers had arrived.

Bardin waved.

Nobody waved back.

Instead, several hunters raised their weapons.

Bardin: "I think they don't like us."

Dorion looked at the armed hunters.

Dorion: "That assessment seems accurate."

THE FIRST HUNTERS

The Skiff landed in a clearing.

The moment the ramp opened, the questors heard the jungle.

Birds.

Insects.

Distant animal calls.

The sound of flowing water.

Then—

silence.

Every natural sound stopped.

Something was watching them.

Dorion placed a hand near his weapon.

Sorion raised his hand.

Sorion: "Don't."

Dorion looked at him.

Sorion: "We're visitors."

A group emerged from the vegetation.

Hunters.

They wore practical clothing made from woven fibers, leather, feathers, and natural materials.

Their weapons were simple at first glance.

But Lirion noticed glowing Technomagik channels running through the bows and spearheads.

Nature-enhanced weapons.

The hunters surrounded the Skiff.

Their leader stepped forward.

Hunter: "Leave."

Valek raised both hands.

Valek: "We come in peace."

The hunter stared at him.

Hunter: "Everyone says that before they take something."

Bardin lowered his lute.

Bardin: "That's fair."

The hunter looked toward him.

Hunter: "You speak strangely."

Bardin smiled.

Bardin: "I've been told that before."

The hunter ignored the joke.

His eyes moved toward the Skiff.

Then toward Lirion.

Then Sorion.

His expression changed.

Hunter: "You carry the memory of another region."

Sorion stepped forward.

Sorion: "We came from Skyreach."

The hunter immediately raised his weapon.

The others followed.

Hunter: "Skyreach."

The word was spoken with suspicion.

Hunter: "You came from the sky."

Lirion nodded.

Lirion: "Yes."

The hunter looked toward the clouds.

Hunter: "Then you should return to it."

A LAND OF TRIBES

The questors soon discovered that Veridian Enclave was not ruled by a single kingdom.

It was a collection of tribes and settlements.

Each had developed its own relationship with the jungle.

Some were hunters.

Some were gatherers.

Some were river communities.

Some lived almost entirely within the great trees.

Others inhabited hidden valleys where enormous creatures roamed.

Their beliefs were different as well.

Some worshipped the ancient forces of the jungle.

Others believed that every creature possessed a memory shared with the land.

Another tribe believed the jungle was not a home at all.

It was an ancestor.

To harm the forest was therefore considered an act against their own bloodline.

And then there was the most secluded tribe of all.

A tribe rarely seen by outsiders.

A society of women who had spent generations protecting Veridian Enclave.

They were known as the Verdant Wardens.

They were not merely hunters.

They were Technomagik warriors.

Their armor was grown rather than forged.

Living wood formed around their bodies.

Vines served as energy conduits.

Crystal seeds were embedded into their weapons.

Their warriors could summon roots from the ground, manipulate plant-based Technomagik, and move through the jungle with extraordinary speed.

Most importantly—

they did not welcome outsiders.

The hunters warned the questors.

Hunter: "If the Wardens see you, do not raise your weapons."

Dorion frowned.

Dorion: "Why?"

Hunter: "Because they will interpret that as permission."

Bardin swallowed.

Bardin: "Permission for what?"

The hunter simply walked away.

THE NATURAL LAW

The questors remained near the settlement.

They began observing the daily life of Veridian.

Hunters entered the jungle at dawn.

They did not kill randomly.

They tracked animals carefully.

They knew which creatures could be hunted and which were protected.

They harvested edible plants without destroying their roots.

They gathered fruit only when it had ripened.

Children were taught the difference between medicine and poison before they were taught how to read.

The jungle itself determined survival.

Predators hunted prey.

Prey avoided predators.

Hunters competed with predators for certain animals.

Sometimes they lost.

Sometimes they succeeded.

Nobody considered this unnatural.

It was simply life.

Bardin watched a large predator stalk a herd of smaller creatures.

He expected the hunters to interfere.

They didn't.

Bardin: "They're just letting it happen."

A local hunter beside him answered.

Hunter: "Why shouldn't it?"

Bardin: "Because they're being hunted."

Hunter: "And the predator must eat."

Bardin was silent.

The hunter continued.

Hunter: "If we kill every predator, the prey multiply."

He pointed toward the vegetation.

Hunter: "Then the plants disappear."

He pointed toward the river.

Hunter: "Then the river changes."

Finally, he pointed toward the settlement.

Hunter: "Then we suffer."

Sorion understood.

Veridian's civilization wasn't built by conquering nature.

It survived by maintaining balance within it.

The entire region was an enormous ecosystem.

And its Technomagik system existed to preserve that balance.

THE CORRUPTION

But something had changed.

Sorion noticed it first.

Some plants were black.

Not dead.

Not yet.

But sick.

Certain animals avoided particular areas.

The rivers carried strange dark particles.

Some hunters had begun moving their settlements.

Lirion scanned the soil.

Lirion: "The corruption is here."

The local hunter's expression became grim.

Hunter: "It has been spreading."

Lirion: "How long?"

Hunter: "We stopped counting."

Sorion touched a corrupted plant.

Its memory was fractured.

He saw the plant growing.

Flowering.

Producing seeds.

Then darkness entered its roots.

The plant remembered being healthy.

But it was slowly forgetting how.

Sorion withdrew his hand.

Sorion: "The corruption isn't killing everything at once."

The hunter nodded.

Hunter: "It takes a little."

Sorion: "Every day."

Hunter: "Every season."

Sorion looked across the jungle.

Sorion: "Until nothing remembers."

The hunter stared at him.

For the first time, his suspicion weakened.

THE VERDANT WARDENS

That night, the questors remained in the settlement.

Bardin played quietly near the fire.

The music traveled through the trees.

Then the flames suddenly turned green.

Every hunter stood.

Sorion opened his eyes.

Someone was approaching.

Not one person.

Many.

The jungle moved.

Figures emerged from the darkness.

Women wearing living Technomagik armor.

Their weapons glowed with green and silver energy.

Their movements were silent.

They surrounded the settlement.

The leader stepped forward.

Her armor was more elaborate than the others.

Branches formed a crown-like structure around her shoulders.

A crystal embedded in her chest pulsed with the rhythm of the surrounding forest.

She looked directly at Sorion.

Warden Leader: "You touched the forest."

Sorion nodded.

Sorion: "Yes."

Warden Leader: "Why?"

Sorion: "I heard it."

The woman narrowed her eyes.

Warden Leader: "The forest does not speak to strangers."

Sorion looked toward the dying trees.

Sorion: "Perhaps it didn't speak."

He paused.

Sorion: "Perhaps it remembered me."

The Wardens raised their weapons.

Lirion quietly prepared his systems.

Dorion stepped forward.

Sorion stopped him.

Then Bardin began playing.

A soft melody.

The same melody that had helped restore the Thalorian guardians.

The Warden Leader listened.

Her expression slowly changed.

She recognized something within the music.

A memory.

An ancient memory of Veridian before the corruption.

She lowered her weapon.

Warden Leader: "Where did you learn that?"

Bardin stopped playing.

Bardin: "From the people of Thalorin."

The woman looked at him sharply.

Warden Leader: "Thalorin?"

Lirion stepped forward.

Lirion: "We found the Lost Reaches."

The Wardens became completely silent.

The leader stared at them.

Warden Leader: "Then you found the Tears."

Lirion held up the containment case.

The green light from within it illuminated the night.

The Warden Leader took a step forward.

For the first time, fear appeared in her expression.

Not fear of the questors.

Fear of hope.

THE TEARS OF THE SIREN

The questors explained everything.

The Lost Reaches.

The Thalorian guardians.

The gravitic engine.

The forgotten cities.

The Tears of the Siren.

The Warden Leader listened without interruption.

When they finished, she looked toward the corrupted jungle.

Warden Leader: "You believe that can save us."

Lirion answered carefully.

Lirion: "We believe it can help."

Warden Leader: "Not save."

Lirion: "Not without understanding your system."

The woman nodded.

That answer seemed to matter.

Warden Leader: "Good."

She looked at the Tears.

Warden Leader: "Because if you pour that water into our land without understanding what it does..."

She turned toward the jungle.

Warden Leader: "...you could destroy what remains."

Lirion lowered the case.

The questors realized the truth.

The Tears were not a simple magical cure.

Veridian already had its own nature-based Technomagik system.

The Tears had to be integrated into it.

Otherwise they could disrupt the delicate balance between plants, animals, rivers, tribes, and the ancient Technomagik network.

The Warden Leader looked at Sorion.

Warden Leader: "If you truly wish to help Veridian..."

She pointed toward the deepest part of the jungle.

Warden Leader: "You must first learn how it lives."

Sorion nodded.

Sorion: "Then teach us."

The Warden Leader turned away.

Warden Leader: "Tomorrow."

She paused.

Warden Leader: "You will enter the Wild."

Bardin smiled nervously.

Bardin: "We're already in the wild."

The Warden Leader looked back.

Warden Leader: "No."

Her eyes reflected the green light of the jungle.

Warden Leader: "You are standing at its edge."

The jungle roared in the distance.

Something enormous moved beneath the canopy.

Birds scattered.

The ground trembled.

The questors looked toward the darkness.

Veridian Enclave was not merely a city surrounded by wilderness.

The wilderness was the city.

And before they could save it, they would have to survive it.
