Chapter 102 - Episode 102 : The First Root

Morning came quietly to Veridian.

There was no sunrise the questors could see.

The canopy above them was too dense.

Instead, they knew morning had arrived because the forest began to breathe.

Flowers opened.

Insects emerged.

Birds called from distant branches.

Water began moving through the living channels of the trees.

And beneath everything—

a faint green pulse traveled through the ground.

Thrum.

Then silence.

Thrum.

Then silence again.

Sorion stood at the edge of the Green Veil.

He could feel the pulse beneath his feet.

"It is weaker today."

Lirion checked his readings.

"Not just weaker."

He looked at the display.

"It is losing synchronization."

Bardin tightened the strap of his lute.

"Then we should find out why."

A figure emerged from the mist.

Kaelira.

Behind her stood several Verdant Warriors.

She carried no visible weapon.

Only a short wooden staff wrapped in living vines.

"You are ready."

Sorion nodded.

"We are."

Kaelira turned toward the Green Veil.

"Then today you will see what we protect."

Beyond the Green Veil

The five followed Kaelira into the deepest part of the sanctuary.

This time, the forest did not simply grow thicker.

It changed.

The trees became enormous.

Their roots rose from the earth like stone walls.

Some were wider than houses.

Others formed tunnels beneath the jungle.

Green light moved through them like blood.

Lirion stopped.

"These roots are carrying Technomagik."

Kaelira continued walking.

"Yes."

"How deep?"

"Deeper than the oldest trees."

Lirion looked at the ground.

"How old is this network?"

Kaelira answered without turning.

"Older than our tribes."

"Older than the Enclave?"

"Yes."

Lirion frowned.

"Then where does it begin?"

Kaelira finally stopped.

"At the First Root."

The Descent

The path disappeared beneath an enormous tree.

Its trunk was hollow.

Inside was a spiral staircase formed entirely from living roots.

The questors descended.

One level.

Then another.

Then another.

The light from the surface slowly vanished.

Bardin's footsteps echoed.

"How far down are we going?"

Kaelira answered:

"Far enough that the forest above will no longer hear us."

Dorion looked at her.

"That sounds comforting."

"It isn't."

They continued.

The deeper they went, the warmer the air became.

The roots around them began pulsing faster.

Thrum.

Thrum.

Thrum.

Sorion stopped.

He placed his hand against the wall.

Something was wrong.

"I can feel pain."

Kaelira looked at him.

"Good."

Sorion frowned.

"Good?"

"It means you can hear what is happening."

The First Root

The staircase finally ended.

The questors stepped into a cavern so enormous they could not see its ceiling.

At its center stood something impossible.

A single root.

It descended from somewhere far above.

But unlike the surrounding roots, it was enormous.

Its surface was covered in glowing patterns.

Green.

Gold.

Silver.

Blue.

Every color of Technomagik they had encountered in Veridian appeared within it.

The root disappeared into the earth beneath them.

Lirion stared.

"This is the central conduit."

Kaelira shook her head.

"Not a conduit."

Lirion corrected himself.

"The central living connection."

Kaelira nodded.

"This is the First Root."

Bardin slowly approached.

"It looks like a tree."

Kaelira smiled.

"It is."

"Then why does it feel like a machine?"

Lirion answered before Kaelira could.

"Because Veridian never separated the two."

Where the System Begins

Lirion activated his scanner.

Thousands of Technomagik signals appeared.

They spread from the First Root in every direction.

Some traveled upward.

Others traveled sideways.

Others disappeared into the ground.

The network extended toward the hunters' territories.

The tree-dwellers.

The Drumkeepers.

The rivers.

The Rootkeepers.

Even the distant territories the questors had never visited.

Lirion's voice became quiet.

"This is everything."

Kaelira nodded.

"The First Root does not command Veridian."

She placed her hand against it.

"It listens."

"And responds."

Sorion stepped forward.

He could feel memories flowing through it.

Rain.

Growth.

Hunting.

Migration.

Birth.

Death.

Fire.

Regeneration.

Every cycle passed through the root.

Then he felt something else.

A disturbance.

His eyes opened.

"Something is wrong."

Kaelira's expression hardened.

"We know."

The Broken Pulse

A section of the First Root was dark.

Not dead.

Dark.

The green Technomagik surrounding it moved around the damaged section rather than through it.

Lirion approached.

"This is where the synchronization breaks."

Kaelira nodded.

"This is the wound."

Dorion examined it.

"What caused it?"

Kaelira did not answer immediately.

Instead, she pointed toward the darkness beneath the root.

"We don't know."

The five looked down.

There was something moving below.

A faint scraping sound.

Then silence.

Bardin lowered his voice.

"Did you hear that?"

Everyone heard it.

Scrrrrkkk.

Something dragged itself across stone.

Dorion reached for his weapon.

Kaelira raised her hand.

"Do not attack."

Another sound.

Closer.

Scrrrrkkk.

Lirion's scanner suddenly flickered.

"I can't identify it."

Sorion closed his eyes.

Then immediately opened them.

"It's not part of the network."

The Thing Beneath the Roots

The ground trembled.

A crack opened beneath the First Root.

Something emerged.

It was not a beast.

Not entirely.

Its body seemed to be made from tangled roots, black soil, and hardened Technomagik.

It had no recognizable face.

Only a cluster of glowing openings that pulsed with corrupted energy.

The Verdant Warriors immediately raised their weapons.

Kaelira shouted:

"Hold!"

The creature struck the ground.

A shockwave raced through the cavern.

The First Root flickered.

Lirion staggered.

"The pulse!"

Sorion grabbed the root.

The creature was feeding on the disruption.

Kaelira's expression changed.

"It has been hiding beneath the network."

Bardin stared at it.

"What is it?"

Kaelira shook her head.

"We don't know."

The Hidden Threat

The creature moved again.

This time, it did not attack the questors.

It attacked the root.

Its tendrils wrapped around the damaged section.

Green light disappeared into the creature.

Lirion shouted:

"It's consuming the Technomagik!"

Dorion charged forward.

Kaelira stopped him.

"Don't strike it!"

Dorion looked at her.

"Why?"

"If you sever those tendrils, the feedback will travel through the First Root."

Lirion understood immediately.

"It could damage the entire network."

Dorion stopped.

The creature pulled harder.

The cavern shook.

Above them, somewhere in the distant jungle, the forest began responding.

Birds suddenly flew from the trees.

Animals scattered.

The pulse weakened.

Sorion closed his eyes.

He could feel the disturbance spreading.

The creature was not simply feeding.

It was isolating the First Root from the rest of Veridian.

The Choice

Lirion looked at the creature.

"We can't fight it conventionally."

Dorion frowned.

"Then what do we do?"

Sorion stepped toward the root.

"Listen."

Bardin looked at him.

"To what?"

"The First Root."

He placed both hands against it.

Silver-violet resonance spread through the bark.

The cavern filled with memories.

The creature recoiled.

For a moment, Sorion saw what lay beneath the corruption.

The creature had once been something else.

Not a natural animal.

Not a Guardian.

Not a person.

It was a mass of damaged Technomagik and corrupted living matter.

Something had been trapped beneath the network.

Something had survived by feeding on broken connections.

Sorion opened his eyes.

"It isn't attacking because it hates Veridian."

Kaelira stared at him.

"Then why?"

"It is hungry."

A Different Kind of Enemy

Lirion scanned the creature again.

This time, the readings changed.

"I see it."

"What?"

"It isn't consuming healthy Technomagik."

He pointed toward the damaged section.

"It's feeding on the corrupted energy."

Sorion nodded.

"But the corruption is mixed with the natural network."

Lirion's expression became grim.

"So every time it feeds…"

"It damages Veridian."

"And every time we attack it…"

"The damage spreads."

Kaelira slowly understood.

"The creature is trapped in the wound."

Sorion looked at her.

"And the wound is feeding the creature."

Neither can survive without the other.

The Test of Trust

Kaelira looked at the questors.

"You came here carrying the Tears."

Sorion nodded.

"Yes."

"You could use one now."

Lirion immediately objected.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

He continued.

"If the Tear restores the corrupted section too quickly, the creature may be forced into the healthy network."

Kaelira nodded.

"Correct."

Lirion looked at Sorion.

"We can't heal this blindly."

Sorion nodded.

Then Kaelira said something unexpected.

"There is another way."

She removed a small green crystal from her belt.

"This is a Verdant Seed."

Lirion examined it.

"It contains living Technomagik."

"Yes."

"If we introduce it into the damaged root…"

"It may reconnect the broken section."

"And the creature?"

Kaelira looked toward the darkness.

"We don't know."

Dorion stepped forward.

"That sounds dangerous."

"It is."

Valek looked at Kaelira.

"And you're asking us to trust you."

Kaelira shook her head.

"No."

She looked at the five.

"We are asking you to trust Veridian."

The Living Connection

Bardin understood first.

"We don't force the creature away."

Sorion nodded.

"We restore the connection around it."

Lirion's eyes widened.

"Create another path."

"Yes."

The plan was simple.

But extremely dangerous.

The Verdant Warriors would stabilize the First Root.

Lirion would guide the Technomagik flow.

Bardin would maintain the rhythm.

Sorion would connect the memory.

Dorion and Valek would protect the group without striking the creature.

Kaelira would place the Verdant Seed.

Everyone took their positions.

The creature sensed the movement.

It screamed.

Not like an animal.

Like breaking wood.

The entire cavern shook.

The First Pulse

Bardin began playing.

Slow.

Deep.

Simple.

The rhythm of the Drumkeepers.

Then the rhythm of the hunters.

The rhythm of footsteps.

Breathing.

Movement.

Life.

Lirion redirected the Technomagik.

Green energy flowed around the creature instead of through it.

Dorion and Valek held their positions.

The creature struck.

Dorion blocked the tendril with his shield.

He did not attack.

He simply held it back.

Valek caught another with his weapon and pushed it away.

No killing blow.

No destruction.

Only protection.

Kaelira reached the damaged root.

She pressed the Verdant Seed into the wound.

For a moment—

nothing happened.

Then Sorion screamed:

"NOW!"

Kaelira released the Seed.

The First Root Remembers

Green light exploded through the cavern.

The First Root pulsed.

THOOM.

The creature was thrown backward.

But instead of attacking, it collapsed.

The corrupted tendrils withdrew.

The dark section of the root began glowing.

Slowly.

Weakly.

But alive.

Sorion remained connected.

He saw the memories returning.

Rain.

Seeds.

Roots.

Predators.

Prey.

Hunters.

Tree-dwellers.

Drumkeepers.

Every tribe.

Every creature.

Every living thing.

Not returning to the past.

Continuing into the future.

The creature beneath the root began to dissolve.

Bardin stopped playing.

The cavern became silent.

What Remained

The questors approached the creature.

There was no monster anymore.

Only a small blackened mass of roots.

Lirion scanned it.

"It isn't dead."

Dorion looked surprised.

"What?"

"It's dormant."

Sorion knelt.

He touched it.

A faint memory appeared.

Not words.

A feeling.

Hunger.

Fear.

Isolation.

Sorion looked toward Kaelira.

"It was trapped."

Kaelira lowered her weapon.

"For how long?"

Sorion looked at the ancient root.

"Long enough to forget what it was."

Kaelira's expression softened.

"Then perhaps we should not destroy it."

Lirion nodded.

"We contain it."

"And study it."

Sorion shook his head.

"Not just study."

He looked at the small living mass.

"Remember it."

The First Root Awakens

The First Root pulsed again.

This time the signal traveled farther.

Through the jungle.

Through the rivers.

Through the trees.

Through the roots.

The questors could feel it.

The hunters felt it.

The tree-dwellers felt it.

The Drumkeepers heard it.

Across Veridian, dormant Technomagik systems flickered back to life for a moment.

Not restored.

Not healed.

But connected.

Kaelira looked at Sorion.

"You have seen the wound."

Sorion nodded.

"Yes."

"And now you know what lies beneath it."

"Yes."

Kaelira looked toward the First Root.

"Then you understand why the deepest parts of Veridian are forbidden."

Sorion looked at the living network.

"Because if someone controls this…"

"They control nothing."

Kaelira interrupted him.

She pointed toward the roots.

"They would only control themselves."

Sorion understood.

"The network would reject them."

"No."

Kaelira looked into his eyes.

"The network would adapt."

The Meaning of Protection

They began their journey back toward the surface.

Lirion remained unusually quiet.

Bardin eventually asked:

"What are you thinking?"

Lirion looked at his scanner.

"All this time, I've been trying to understand Veridian as a system."

He closed the device.

"But systems can be repaired."

He looked back toward the roots.

"Veridian has to be understood differently."

Dorion smiled.

"As a living thing."

Lirion nodded.

Sorion looked at Kaelira.

"And the First Root?"

Kaelira answered:

"It has awakened."

"Is that good?"

She looked toward the surface.

"It means Veridian knows we are here."

Bardin laughed softly.

"I thought it already knew."

Kaelira looked at him.

"Now it is listening."

The Path Forward

When they emerged from the Green Veil, the jungle felt different.

The same trees.

The same rivers.

The same animals.

But beneath everything was a stronger pulse.

Thrum.

The questors stopped.

Thrum.

The forest breathed.

Sorion looked at the vial containing the Tear of the Siren.

They were closer than ever to restoration.

But now they knew exactly what they were dealing with.

The corruption was not simply destroying Veridian.

It was creating wounds.

Those wounds created instability.

That instability created new life forms and distortions.

And beneath the roots, something had survived inside the damage.

A hidden threat.

Not yet understood.

Not yet destroyed.

But no longer feeding freely.

Kaelira stood beside them.

"The First Root is only the beginning."

Lirion looked toward her.

"There are more?"

Kaelira nodded.

"Many."

Sorion looked across the jungle.

"How many?"

Kaelira's answer was quiet.

"Enough to make the restoration dangerous."

The five questors exchanged glances.

The Tear of the Siren could heal Veridian.

But now they understood the real challenge.

They had to heal a living network without awakening everything that had survived inside its wounds.

Far beneath them, the dormant mass of corrupted roots moved once.

Just once.

Then became still.

And somewhere deep beneath Veridian—

something remembered that it was no longer alone.

The path to restoration had been found.

But the cost of awakening Veridian had yet to be revealed.
