The Northern Node did not fall silent.
It changed.
After Vaelthuun released his grip on the network, the unnatural synchronization faded. Predators resumed their hunts. Prey returned to their cautious movements. Rivers wandered according to the land instead of following one rhythm. Flowers opened at different times, and the trees moved independently beneath the morning wind.
Veridian was chaotic again.
And that was exactly how it was supposed to be.
Sorion stood beneath the Northern Node, watching its roots glow softly.
"It feels different."
Lirion looked at his readings.
"Because the network isn't trying to make everything identical anymore."
Bardin smiled.
"So the forest is back to being noisy."
A bird suddenly screamed from a nearby branch.
Dorion looked up.
"I prefer the noise."
Valek laughed quietly.
"So does the bird."
Kaelira remained serious.
"This is only the beginning."
Sorion looked toward her.
"Because of the other guardians?"
Kaelira nodded.
"The Seven Functions were separated long before our tribes existed."
Lirion looked at the seven symbols they had discovered.
"Water. Seed. Migration. Growth. Rhythm. Memory. Connection."
His eyes stopped on the final symbol.
"Vaelthuun."
The young Hunter stood beside the Northern Node.
She touched the living bark.
"He says the others are still out there."
Sorion turned toward her.
"Does he know where?"
She shook her head.
"He remembers places."
Lirion raised an eyebrow.
"Places?"
"Not locations."
She closed her eyes.
"Memories of locations."
Lirion smiled.
"That might be enough."
The Seven-Root Map
The questors returned to the circular chamber beneath the Northern Node.
The seven pillars were still glowing.
But now something had changed.
Thin lines of green light extended from each pillar and disappeared beneath the floor.
Lirion crouched beside them.
"These aren't decorative."
Dorion folded his arms.
"You've said that about almost everything in this forest."
"And I was right every time."
Bardin chuckled.
Kaelira stepped closer.
"What do they do?"
Lirion brushed dirt away from the center of the chamber.
A circular stone mechanism was revealed.
Seven grooves surrounded an empty central ring.
"The guardians weren't just connected to Veridian."
He traced one groove.
"They were connected through this."
Sorion studied the center.
"What is it?"
"A routing system."
Kaelira frowned.
"Routing?"
"Think of it as a map."
Lirion placed his hand over the mechanism.
Nothing happened.
He looked at Sorion.
"Memory resonance."
Sorion understood.
He placed his hand beside Lirion's.
Silver-violet energy spread across the stone.
The seven grooves illuminated.
Then—
THOOM.
A projection rose from the floor.
Not a technological hologram.
It was made of living light.
A map of Veridian appeared.
The rivers became blue lines.
The roots became green.
The tribes appeared as tiny points of light.
The First Root appeared at the center.
The Northern Node appeared above it.
Then six additional points appeared.
One beneath a mountain.
One deep in a seed forest.
One along an ancient migration path.
One beneath an enormous jungle canopy.
One beneath a valley filled with drums.
One somewhere beyond the oldest memory trees.
Lirion stared.
"The guardians left traces."
Kaelira whispered:
"They were never completely gone."
Sorion looked toward the final point.
"What about Vaelthuun?"
The seventh point appeared beside the others.
Then the map shifted.
A dark gap appeared.
The young Hunter suddenly opened her eyes.
"That's where he was trapped."
Sorion looked at her.
"Where?"
She pointed toward the western region.
"The First Root."
The Puzzle of the Seven Paths
The projection suddenly collapsed.
The stone mechanism changed.
Seven symbols rotated around the central ring.
Lirion immediately became alert.
"It's asking something."
Dorion sighed.
"Of course it is."
Bardin looked at the symbols.
"What kind of question?"
Lirion studied the grooves.
"Order."
Kaelira looked at the symbols.
"Can you solve it?"
"Not alone."
Sorion stepped forward.
"Then let's think."
Seven symbols.
Seven functions.
But the puzzle wasn't asking for the names.
The grooves had different shapes.
The Water symbol connected to a curved channel.
The Seed symbol connected to branching lines.
Migration connected to a long winding path.
Growth connected upward.
Rhythm connected in circles.
Memory connected backward.
Connection connected everything.
Lirion slowly understood.
"It's showing dependency."
Valek looked confused.
"Dependency?"
"Water allows growth."
He pointed to the first line.
"Growth produces seeds."
Another.
"Seeds support migration."
Another.
"Migration affects rhythm."
Another.
"Rhythm carries memory."
Another.
"And memory preserves connection."
Sorion looked at the final symbol.
"And connection returns everything to the living network."
Lirion nodded.
"So the order isn't about which guardian is strongest."
Kaelira finished:
"It's about how Veridian lives."
They arranged the symbols.
Water.
Growth.
Seed.
Migration.
Rhythm.
Memory.
Connection.
The mechanism clicked.
KRAK.
The central ring opened.
A small crystal emerged.
But it wasn't a battery crystal like those found in Thalorin.
It was organic.
A tiny green crystal containing a moving droplet of water.
Lirion carefully lifted it.
"Memory seed."
Bardin leaned closer.
"What does it remember?"
Sorion touched it.
His eyes widened.
"A gate."
The Hidden Gate
A vision appeared.
Veridian long ago.
The jungle was much larger.
A group of ancient Veridian people walked beneath enormous trees.
They carried no machines.
Instead, they carried living branches and glowing seeds.
They reached a massive tree growing around a stone formation.
The roots opened.
Behind them was a circular gateway.
Not built like the Veil Gates of Thalorin.
This one was almost completely covered by vegetation.
Its surface looked like stone.
But beneath the moss—
there were ancient Technomagik symbols.
The people stepped through.
The vision ended.
Sorion opened his eyes.
"There is a Veil Gate here."
Kaelira stared at him.
"Where?"
Sorion shook his head.
"The memory didn't show its location."
Lirion examined the crystal.
"It showed the entrance."
Bardin looked around.
"So where is the gate?"
Lirion looked toward the map.
"Somewhere inside Veridian."
Kaelira's expression became guarded.
"That's impossible."
"Why?"
"The Green Veil records mention no functioning Veil Gate."
Sorion looked at her.
"Maybe it isn't functioning."
Lirion nodded.
"Or maybe it's hidden deliberately."
The young Hunter suddenly spoke.
"My people have a story."
Everyone turned.
She continued.
"Hunters sometimes find a place where the trees grow in a perfect circle."
Kaelira looked at her.
"Where?"
"Beyond the western hunting grounds."
Kaelira's expression changed.
"You mean the Hollow Grove?"
The Hunter nodded.
"Some hunters say animals refuse to enter."
Sorion looked toward the others.
"That may be our gate."
The Guardian That Would Not Wake
Before they could leave, the Water symbol on the wall illuminated.
Water suddenly erupted from the stone floor.
Dorion drew his weapon.
"Something's coming!"
A massive creature formed from water and roots emerged from the chamber.
It had no face.
Only two glowing blue eyes.
It struck the ground.
BOOM!
Water exploded across the chamber.
Dorion raised his shield.
CLANG!
The impact pushed him backward.
Valek rushed forward.
"Dorion!"
"I've got it!"
The creature swung again.
Valek blocked.
The floor cracked beneath his feet.
Lirion shouted:
"Don't attack its core!"
Dorion looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because it isn't attacking us!"
The creature's arm changed shape.
Instead of striking—
it pointed toward the Water pillar.
Sorion lowered his hand.
"It's trying to show us something."
The creature struck the pillar.
BOOM!
A crack appeared.
Behind it was a narrow water channel.
Lirion stared.
"It's blocked."
Kaelira understood.
"The Water Guardian isn't waking."
Sorion approached.
"It's showing us why."
The channel was filled with blackened roots.
Not the same corruption as the Dormant Hunger.
These roots were old.
Dry.
Dead.
The Water Guardian was trapped behind them.
Lirion scanned the obstruction.
"This isn't an infection."
Kaelira looked at him.
"Then what is it?"
"An isolation barrier."
Sorion's expression became serious.
"Someone sealed the water away."
The water creature slowly began disappearing.
Before it vanished completely, a single drop floated toward Sorion.
He touched it.
A memory entered his mind.
The Water Guardian had withdrawn voluntarily.
It wasn't defeated.
It was hiding.
Because something had entered the water long ago.
Something the guardian was afraid to carry through the network.
Sorion opened his eyes.
"It isn't ready."
Kaelira nodded.
"Then we don't wake it."
Lirion looked at the sealed channel.
"We find out what it was protecting."
A Different Kind of Threat
The ground suddenly trembled.
The seven symbols flickered.
Vaelthuun's presence moved through the roots.
The young Hunter grabbed her chest.
"He's frightened."
Sorion turned.
"Why?"
She listened.
"He knows the Water Guardian."
"Does he know what happened?"
She shook her head.
"He remembers the separation."
A pause.
"Not the reason."
Sorion looked at the seven pillars.
Something didn't make sense.
The Seven had separated to protect Veridian.
But from what?
And why had the Water Guardian sealed itself away?
Lirion looked at the memory crystal.
"There's something missing."
Bardin looked at him.
"What?"
"The map."
Lirion pointed.
"All seven guardian locations are shown."
"So?"
"The Water Guardian's location is here."
He pointed to the chamber.
"But the map also showed another location beneath the western region."
Sorion's expression changed.
"The Veil Gate."
Lirion nodded.
"The gate may not just be an entrance."
Kaelira looked toward him.
"What do you mean?"
"It could have been part of the containment system."
Silence.
Sorion remembered the vision.
The gate had been surrounded by roots.
Not abandoned.
Hidden.
Protected.
Maybe even sealed.
The Hollow Grove
The questors left the chamber with Kaelira and the young Hunter.
They traveled west.
The jungle gradually became quieter.
Hunters they passed gave warnings.
"Don't follow the white vines."
"Don't disturb the old trees."
"Don't enter the Hollow Grove."
Dorion looked at Kaelira.
"Everyone seems very concerned about this place."
Kaelira nodded.
"Because nobody knows what is inside."
Bardin smiled.
"That's usually when we find something interesting."
Kaelira gave him a stern look.
"This isn't a joke."
Bardin's smile disappeared.
"I know."
The forest eventually opened.
They saw it.
A gigantic circular grove.
Every tree around it grew outward in perfect symmetry.
In the center was an empty clearing.
No animals.
No insects.
No birds.
Not even wind.
Sorion immediately felt it.
"A memory boundary."
Lirion scanned the ground.
"There are Technomagik traces beneath us."
Kaelira whispered:
"The Veil Gate."
The Door Beneath the Roots
They entered the clearing.
Nothing happened.
Bardin looked around.
"So where's the gate?"
Lirion examined the trees.
"Not visible."
Sorion closed his eyes.
He listened.
Not to sound.
To memory.
He remembered the vision.
The ancient people had touched a tree.
Not the ground.
A tree.
Sorion placed his hand against the largest tree.
Nothing.
Then the young Hunter noticed something.
"Look."
A tiny green mark appeared on the bark.
The same symbol as the Memory pillar.
Sorion touched it.
The roots beneath them moved.
GRRRRNNNNK.
The earth opened.
But instead of revealing a staircase—
it revealed a circular stone surface buried beneath centuries of roots.
A Veil Gate.
Ancient.
Dormant.
Completely concealed beneath the living forest.
Lirion stared at it.
"This is it."
Kaelira stepped backward.
"The ancient gate."
Sorion approached.
The gate had no visible activation crystal.
Only one inscription.
He brushed away the moss.
The words appeared:
"That which is separated must not be forced together."
Everyone became silent.
Lirion looked at Sorion.
"That sounds like Elyndra."
Sorion frowned.
"Maybe."
Kaelira looked uneasy.
"Who is Elyndra?"
Sorion didn't answer immediately.
He looked at the dormant gate.
"We don't know yet."
The Fear Beneath Veridian
Then—
the Veil Gate pulsed.
Once.
THUM.
The seven guardian symbols appeared around its edge.
Water.
Seed.
Migration.
Growth.
Rhythm.
Memory.
Connection.
But beneath them—
another mark appeared.
A symbol none of them recognized.
It was not green.
It was not blue.
It was almost colorless.
And the moment Sorion saw it—
he felt fear.
Not his own.
Someone else's.
A voice whispered through the roots.
"Do not open the gate."
The young Hunter stepped backward.
Kaelira drew her weapon.
Dorion raised his shield.
Valek positioned himself between the group and the gate.
Lirion's scanner began malfunctioning.
Bardin's instrument strings vibrated without being touched.
Sorion stared at the gate.
"Who are you?"
No answer.
Only another whisper.
"You are restoring what should remain forgotten."
The gate went dark.
The unknown presence disappeared.
The jungle remained silent.
For several moments nobody moved.
Finally, Kaelira lowered her weapon.
"That wasn't Vaelthuun."
Sorion shook his head.
"No."
Lirion looked at the dead scanner.
"And it wasn't one of the Seven."
Bardin looked toward the hidden gate.
"Then we've found something that the ancient people wanted hidden."
Sorion stared at the inscription.
The meaning was becoming clearer.
Veridian had not simply forgotten its guardians.
Someone had deliberately separated something from the network.
Something important enough to hide behind a Veil Gate.
Something that was still afraid of being remembered.
The Path Forward
The questors did not open the gate.
Not yet.
Instead, they marked the location and returned to the Green Veil.
They had learned three things.
The Seven Guardians were still scattered across Veridian.
The Water Guardian was alive but deliberately dormant.
And somewhere beneath the western forest was an ancient Veil Gate connected to the forgotten history of the guardians.
But the greatest discovery was the warning.
The withering of Veridian might not simply be corruption.
Some parts of the forest had been deliberately separated from the living network.
Perhaps to stop corruption.
Perhaps to protect the Seven.
Perhaps to hide something much older.
Sorion stood beneath the First Root that evening.
He looked toward the western jungle.
Then toward the distant Northern Node.
Vaelthuun's connection was growing stronger.
The Seven were beginning to stir.
And beneath Veridian—
something remained hidden.
Something that believed forgetting was protection.
Sorion whispered:
"If we restore Veridian…"
He looked at the others.
"We may have to decide what should be remembered."
Lirion nodded.
"And what should remain sealed."
Kaelira looked toward the darkness beyond the trees.
"Then the next step isn't awakening the guardians."
Sorion nodded.
"No."
He looked toward the hidden Veil Gate.
"It's understanding why they were separated in the first place."
Far beneath the forest—
the dormant gate gave one final pulse.
THUM.
And somewhere beyond its sealed boundary—
something listened.
