The classroom had gone silent. Dead silent. Everyone staring at their black screens or at nothing at all. The air smelled… wrong. Sharp, metallic, like iron.
I gripped my desk. My bracelet pulsed faintly, as if sensing my fear.
"Is… is this real?" someone whispered.
I didn't answer. Honestly… I didn't know.
Outside, faint scratching noises echoed from the walls. Slow. Deliberate. Like claws dragging. My stomach churned.
Riya leaned toward me, eyes wide. "Hina… that thing… it's still out there, right?"
I didn't look at her. I didn't need to. I could feel it too. Something was watching.
Do Haejin sighed loudly behind us. "Why does it have to be today? I had a meeting with my guild."
"Guild?!" Riya snapped, rolling her eyes. "It's a Crawler, Haejin. Pay attention."
Haejin's smirk faltered for a split second. He glanced at the windows, then back at his desk. "Yeah… okay, scary spider thing. Got it."
Kairo, of course, stayed silent. I swear, that guy is like… a shadow that's always calculating.
I looked at my bracelet again. The violet glow had grown brighter. Not just a pulse now—a small rhythm. Like it was… alive.
A tiny message appeared below the main one:
[Do NOT kill the Crawlers.]
I swallowed. My hands felt cold. "Riya… Haejin… you guys need to stay close."
Riya frowned. "Why? So we can die together?"
I didn't answer. Words wouldn't make her understand. Not yet.
Another scratching sound, louder this time.
I could see movement along the outer wall. Low, slithering, limbs bending like they shouldn't. A Crawler. One of those things from legends… the ones everyone thought were just scary stories for kids.
It was fast. Too fast. My heart pounded.
Then I realized—
It wasn't looking at the classroom. It was looking at me.
"Something's wrong…" I muttered, almost to myself.
Riya blinked. "Wrong? You're underplaying it. That thing is literally staring at us!"
I didn't answer. My eyes were glued to the bracelet. It pulsed harder now, almost like it was trying to communicate.
[Level Up Available]
I froze. "Level… up?" I whispered.
Then the next line appeared:
[Do NOT kill the Crawlers.]
I glanced at Haejin. "Can you see this?"
He shook his head. "See what?"
Exactly. I was the only one who knew.
And that scared me more than the creature.
The Crawler moved again. Its unnatural limbs clung to the wall as it scuttled closer. I could see its pale, almost translucent skin glinting in the sunlight. Its eyes… black, empty, and yet… intelligent.
I backed against the wall, gripping my bracelet. The pulsing grew stronger. Warmer. Almost… guiding me.
"Okay, Hina," I whispered. "Focus. Don't panic. Don't panic. Don't—"
A sharp crash echoed from the hallway.
Someone had tried to open the door.
I could hear screaming.
Panic spread like wildfire.
The Crawler lunged through the shattered glass of the window—faster than anything my eyes could follow.
And for the first time… I understood.
This wasn't about surviving physically.
This was about following the system.
The bracelet pulsed violently. Bright violet light enveloped my hand. A new message appeared:
[Activate Survival Mode? Y/N]
My fingers shook. My chest burned. Sweat dripped down my face.
I swallowed. Slowly… I pressed Y.
A wave of warmth shot up my arm. My vision sharpened. Sounds became clearer. Movements slowed. The Crawler… frozen for a split second.
And in that moment, I realized: I wasn't just a student anymore.
I was a player.
And the game had just begun.
