Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 — Adapting to Kill

The city didn't slow down.

If anything—

It got louder.

Explosions echoed from a distance. Glass shattered somewhere nearby. The constant mix of screams and monster roars blended into a single, chaotic noise that refused to fade.

Adrian walked forward, dagger still in hand.

Each step steady.

Controlled.

Different from before.

"I get it now…"

He glanced at his status window briefly.

[STATUS]

Name: Adrian Vance

Level: 3

HP: 25/25

STR: 4

AGI: 5

VIT: 3

INT: 1

Available Points: 3

"Stats matter… but not as much as I thought."

He clenched his fist.

Strength helped.

Speed helped.

But neither would've saved him if he kept fighting blindly.

"Reading the enemy… timing… positioning…"

That was what kept him alive.

A loud crash snapped his attention forward.

At the end of the street—

Another fight.

Three people.

Cornered.

Two Armored Ravagers closing in.

One of them was already injured, clutching his arm, blood dripping onto the pavement.

"Stay back!!"

A guy swung a wooden plank wildly.

It hit one of the monsters—

And did nothing.

CRACK.

The plank broke.

"…Yeah," Adrian muttered. "That's not gonna work."

One Ravager lunged.

The injured man didn't react in time—

Adrian moved.

Fast.

Faster than before.

SHING!

The dagger cut through the air—

And struck the monster's arm mid-swing, slightly redirecting it.

Not enough to stop it completely—

But enough.

The injured man fell back instead of getting hit directly.

"What the—?!"

"Move," Adrian said coldly.

The three scrambled away without hesitation.

They didn't argue.

Didn't question.

They just ran.

Good.

Now—

It was just him.

Two Armored Ravagers.

"…Alright."

They turned toward him simultaneously.

Their movements weren't random anymore.

They were… coordinated.

"…You're learning too?"

The first one charged straight on.

The second circled slightly to the side.

Trying to flank him.

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"Not happening."

He moved first.

Instead of waiting—

He rushed the one on the side.

The Ravager reacted, swinging its claw down—

Adrian slid forward—

Low—

SCRAPE!

The claw missed, barely grazing his shoulder.

Pain flickered—but he ignored it.

"Too wide."

He stepped inside its range—

SLASH!

A clean cut across the neck.

Not deep enough.

But enough to mark the spot.

The second Ravager reached him—

Adrian twisted—

CLANG!

He blocked just enough to deflect the blow.

His arm shook from the impact.

"…Still heavy."

He pushed off, creating distance.

Now both monsters stood in front of him again.

This time—

Closer.

More aggressive.

Adrian exhaled slowly.

"Two at once…"

His grip tightened.

"Then I just have to end it faster."

They charged together.

Adrian didn't retreat.

He stepped forward.

Timing.

The first Ravager swung—

Adrian leaned to the side—

The second lunged from behind—

"…Now."

He shifted his position slightly—

The two monsters collided.

THUD!

A brief opening.

Adrian took it.

SLASH!

He struck the first Ravager's neck—

The same spot—

SLASH!

Again.

Deeper.

Cracks spread across its armored flesh.

[WEAK POINT TARGETED]

The monster roared—

But Adrian didn't stop.

"Fall."

SHK!

Final strike.

The blade pierced through.

[ENEMY DEFEATED]

No pause.

Adrian turned instantly—

The second Ravager was already attacking—

He stepped inside—

Close.

Too close for a full swing.

Perfect.

STAB.

The dagger drove straight into the previous mark—

The monster froze—

"…Too slow."

It collapsed.

[ENEMY DEFEATED]

[BONUS EXP AWARDED]

Silence.

Adrian stood still, breathing slightly heavier this time.

"Two… manageable."

[LEVEL UP]

[LEVEL: 3 → 4]

A stronger surge hit his body.

More noticeable now.

His muscles tightened.

His vision sharpened even further.

"…I'm getting used to this."

He rolled his shoulder—the one that got grazed earlier.

The pain was already fading.

"That's new."

The system wasn't just giving strength.

It was accelerating recovery.

Useful.

Very useful.

"…Which means I can push harder."

Footsteps approached from behind.

"Hey…"

Adrian turned slightly.

It was the same three people.

The injured one, the guy with the plank, and another who hadn't spoken yet.

They looked at him differently now.

Not just fear.

Respect.

Dependence.

"You're… strong," the plank guy said.

Adrian didn't respond.

"Let us come with you."

There it was.

Adrian looked at them for a moment.

Measured them.

Weak.

Slow.

Untrained.

"…You'll die."

The injured guy clenched his jaw.

"Then teach us."

Silence.

Adrian stared at him.

"…This isn't a game."

"I know."

"…You hesitate—you die."

"I know."

"…I won't save you."

"…We know."

A pause.

Then—

Adrian sighed quietly.

"…Stay behind me."

Their eyes widened slightly.

"That means yes, right?"

Adrian turned and started walking.

"Keep up."

That was enough.

They followed immediately.

Not because they were ready—

But because they had no other choice.

As they moved through the ruined street—

Adrian's gaze lifted slightly.

Toward the sky.

Toward the gates.

"…Let's see how far this goes."

Above—

Something watched.

Again.

Closer this time.
