Chapter 17 - Chapter 17 — The Ruined City Gauntlet

Smoke hung thick in the air, choking the remains of the city. Buildings stood as jagged skeletons, debris scattered across every street. Adrian's group moved cautiously, each step calculated. Mira's flames burned faintly along her arms, Leo gripped his patched plank tightly, and Tobias's movements were jittery, the exhaustion from the last wave evident in his every motion.

Adrian's eyes scanned every ruined structure. The black gates above pulsed ominously, radiating a faint red light. He could feel it in his gut: this wave wouldn't just test strength or coordination—it would test endurance, intelligence, and the team's ability to survive under pressure.

From the nearest gate, dozens of monsters poured out: hulking brutes, multi-limbed speed-types, elite cloaked figures, and something new—shadowy wraiths that phased in and out of visibility. The wraiths moved unpredictably, targeting weak points with precision. The battlefield had become a true gauntlet.

Adrian paused. System Analysis highlighted multiple weak points, attack patterns, and environmental hazards: collapsing buildings, unstable debris, and pools of molten material from previous battles. Every step, every strike, could trigger disaster.

"This is no longer just fighting," Adrian said quietly. "We control the battlefield or die. Follow my commands exactly. Hesitate, and you die."

Mira swallowed hard. "There are… too many of them."

"Not if you follow me," Adrian replied, his voice calm but commanding.

The first attack came instantly. A hulking brute slammed its fists into the rubble, sending debris flying toward Tobias. He dodged, but barely. The speed-type lunged at Mira, forcing her to ignite a massive burst of flames to fend it off. An elite cloaked figure targeted Leo's exposed side, striking with a deadly precision.

Adrian moved like a shadow, striking at weak points highlighted by System Analysis, while simultaneously signaling the group. His hand gestures were precise: a flick to the left, a tap for flanking, a wave for focus—all commands executed flawlessly by his team.

Step by step, strike by strike, they coordinated. Mira's flames scorched exposed areas, Leo's strikes hit with perfect timing, and Tobias jabbed repeatedly at openings Adrian highlighted. But the wraiths were unpredictable—they phased in and out, striking from angles that seemed impossible.

One wraith struck at Tobias directly. He froze, panicking, and the creature's claw slashed across his shoulder, drawing blood.

Adrian reacted instantly. He threw himself between Tobias and the wraith, striking at its weak point with Precision Strike. Sparks flew. Tobias stumbled backward but remained alive.

Adrian signaled the group again, activating Battlefield Strategist. The team moved like one entity now. Mira's flames burned hotter, Leo's strikes hit harder, and Tobias moved with unprecedented precision.

Environmental hazards added another layer of danger. A partially collapsed building threatened to fall on the team. Adrian calculated the trajectory and shouted commands: "Move left! Leo, block the falling beam! Mira, distract the brute!"

The team executed perfectly. Leo caught the debris with his plank, Mira flared flames at the hulking brute, and Tobias dodged narrowly. Adrian moved in a swift arc, striking at the multi-limbed monster's exposed side.

The battle continued for what felt like hours. Adrian's Commander's Intuition allowed him to predict enemy movements with incredible accuracy, but the sheer number of threats meant they were constantly on the edge of death.

A hulking brute slammed into the ground near Tobias again. This time, the impact sent him flying into molten debris. Adrian reacted instantly, darting forward, using his dagger to redirect the brute just enough to save Tobias from a fatal strike. Tobias landed hard but survived, coughing up ash and blood.

Adrian didn't pause. He orchestrated the team's movements like a conductor. "Mira, flames on the speed-type! Leo, strike sequentially! Tobias, focus on the elites—weak points only!"

The coordinated assault began to turn the tide. Sequential strikes from the team dismantled the hulking brutes, Mira's flames disoriented the speed-types, and Tobias landed critical hits on the elite cloaked figures. The wraiths, unable to sustain repeated hits at their phasing weak points, staggered and vanished temporarily.

Finally, after a grueling, exhausting fight, the battlefield fell silent. Smoke and black fragments hung heavy in the air. Mira collapsed to her knees, her arms scorched. Leo's plank was shattered, and Tobias clutched his bleeding side.

Adrian stood silently, surveying the ruins. Every team member was alive—but barely.

The system flashed notifications:

[LEVEL UP — ADRIAN VANCE: 13 → 14]

[NEW SKILL UNLOCKED — WAR COORDINATOR: Greatly enhances ally survival and damage output in multi-enemy scenarios]

Adrian ignored it. Survival first.

He turned to the group. "Rest for ten minutes. Evaluate wounds. Every gate is a threat. Every next wave is stronger. Adapt, or die."

The black gates continued to pulse ominously. Adrian's eyes scanned the horizon. More extreme-tier waves were coming. Environmental hazards, elite monsters, and unknown threats awaited them.

"…This is far from over," he muttered.

The system observed silently, calculating just how far Adrian could push his team before they broke completely.

And somewhere beyond the gates, the next nightmare was already stirring.
