Chapter 10 - CHAPTER 10: WANG CHAO'S ARROGANCE

**Stanford Campus – Terman Engineering Center – 11:30 AM**

The lecture hall hummed with the usual pre-class chatter, students tapping on laptops, trading notes, complaining about the upcoming quantum mechanics midterm. Lin Tianyu sat in his usual spot – third row, center, close enough to see the board but far enough to observe the room.

He'd been back on campus for three days since the confrontation with the Suns, trying to re-establish some semblance of normal academic life. The system's notifications were constant now – Athena managing a dozen parallel projects, Chen Jie sending hourly updates on equipment deliveries, Dr. Wu finalizing the wellness center lease, Zhao Ting monitoring Sun Wei's imploding business.

But normal life, he was learning, had a way of intruding.

"Lin Tianyu."

The voice came from behind him, dripping with the particular condescension that only wealthy privilege could produce. He turned to find Wang Chao standing in the aisle, flanked by two other students who radiated the same entitled energy.

Wang Chao was a junior, majoring in business with a minor in being insufferable. His family owned a chain of luxury hotels across Asia, and he made sure everyone knew it. Designer clothes, latest iPhone, watch that cost more than most people's cars – he was a walking advertisement for inherited wealth.

"Wang Chao." Lin Tianyu's voice was neutral. "Can I help you?"

"I heard you've been doing pretty well for yourself." Wang Chao's smile didn't reach his eyes. "Some crypto trades? Freelance work? Must be nice, having a little extra pocket money."

**SYSTEM NOTICE**

Lin Tianyu kept his expression calm. "I manage."

"Manage." Wang Chao laughed, glancing at his companions. "That's one word for it. Another word would be 'lucky.' Or maybe 'lucky' is too generous. Some might say 'suspicious.'"

The lecture hall was quieting now, students sensing drama. Professor Harrison hadn't arrived yet, and the room was ripe for entertainment.

"Suspicious how?" Lin Tianyu asked, genuinely curious how far Wang Chao would go.

"Well, you know." Wang Chao waved a hand vaguely. "Student from a poor family, suddenly has money. Some people might wonder where it came from. Not me, of course. I'm sure it's all perfectly legitimate." His smile widened. "I'm just saying, if I were you, I'd be careful. People talk."

"Let them talk." Lin Tianyu turned back to his notes. "I have nothing to hide."

"Nothing to hide." Wang Chao's voice rose slightly, ensuring more people could hear. "A scholarship student who can't afford new shoes suddenly making thousands in crypto trades. That's not hiding – that's a magic trick. Maybe you should teach a class. I'm sure everyone would love to learn your secrets."

A few students laughed nervously. Most just watched, uncomfortable but unwilling to intervene.

Lin Tianyu stood slowly, turning to face Wang Chao fully. He was slightly shorter than the other man, but something in his stillness made Wang Chao take an involuntary step back.

"My secrets are my own," Lin Tianyu said quietly. "But if you're genuinely interested in trading strategies, I'd be happy to discuss them sometime. Privately. Without an audience."

Wang Chao's eyes narrowed. The implied threat – or invitation – hung in the air. Before he could respond, Professor Harrison walked in, and the class settled into its usual rhythm.

But Lin Tianyu knew this wasn't over. Wang Chao wasn't the type to back down from a perceived challenge. He'd be back.

**Command Space – 2:00 PM**

Lin Tianyu sat on the throne, reviewing Athena's analysis of Wang Chao. The holographic display showed a detailed profile – family background, business interests, personal habits, vulnerabilities.

"Athena, give me the summary."

"Wang Chao is the eldest son of Wang Jianguo, founder of Chao Luxury Hotels. The company owns 12 properties across Asia, with an estimated valuation of ¥850 million. Wang Chao is 23, a junior in the business school, with a GPA of 2.7 – he's here primarily for social connections, not education."

"Vulnerabilities?"

"Several. The family business is highly leveraged – they expanded aggressively during the pandemic and are now carrying significant debt. Two of their properties are underperforming. There's also a pending lawsuit from a former employee alleging wrongful termination and discrimination."

"And personally?"

"Wang Chao has a gambling habit. He's lost approximately ¥2 million at Macau casinos over the past year, which he's been hiding from his father. His credit card debt is substantial – approximately ¥800,000 across multiple cards."

Lin Tianyu nodded slowly. "So he's insecure, in debt, and projecting confidence to hide it. Classic bully psychology."

"Correct. His targeting of you is likely motivated by jealousy – your recent success threatens his self-image as the 'successful one.' He needs to tear you down to feel better about himself."

"The question is whether to engage or ignore."

"Engagement carries risks. Ignoring him carries risks. He's unlikely to stop on his own." Athena paused. "There is a third option – indirect pressure. His father is sensitive to anything that might embarrass the family. If Wang Chao's gambling and debt were to become known..."

"That would destroy him."

"Not destroy. Humble. There's a difference."

Lin Tianyu considered this. The system's capabilities made almost anything possible, but that didn't mean everything was advisable.

"Monitor him for now. If he escalates, we'll consider options. But I'd rather not start a war with someone so... petty."

"Understood. I'll flag any significant developments."

**That Evening – University Cafe – 6:30 PM**

Lin Tianyu sat with Su Qing, their usual corner table transformed by candles and the soft glow of evening. She'd suggested dinner after class, and he'd agreed, grateful for the normalcy.

"You seem distracted," Su Qing observed, stirring her tea. "Everything okay?"

"Just tired. Long week." He smiled, hoping it reached his eyes. "How's the marketing project going?"

"Brutal. Professor Zhang wants a complete campaign proposal by Friday, and my group hasn't agreed on anything yet." She sighed dramatically. "Sometimes I think group projects are designed to teach patience, not marketing."

"They probably are." He reached across the table, touching her hand. "You'll figure it out. You always do."

She smiled, warmth replacing frustration. "You're good at that, you know. Making people feel like everything will be okay."

"It's easy when it's true."

They sat in comfortable silence for a moment, watching the cafe's evening crowd – students studying, couples on dates, professors grading papers. Normal life, happening all around them.

"Can I ask you something?" Su Qing's voice was quieter now.

"Of course."

"That guy in class today – Wang Chao. What was that about?"

Lin Tianyu hesitated. He could deflect, change the subject, protect her from the complexity of his life. But she deserved honesty, at least within limits.

"He's threatened by me. I've had some success recently – investments, freelance work – and it bothers him. He likes being the big fish in a small pond."

"Because his family has money."

"Because his family has money and he's done nothing with it. I'm a scholarship student who's actually accomplished something. That threatens his worldview."

Su Qing nodded slowly. "So he attacks you publicly to feel better about himself."

"Something like that."

"And how do you handle it? Just ignore him?"

"For now. If he escalates, I'll deal with it then." He squeezed her hand. "But I don't want you to worry. This isn't your problem."

"It became my problem when I started caring about you." Her voice was soft but firm. "If someone's going after you, they're going after me too. That's how relationships work."

Lin Tianyu felt something shift in his chest. "Su Qing..."

"I'm not asking you to change anything. I'm just saying – you're not alone. Okay?"

He nodded, unable to speak for a moment. "Okay."

---

**Later That Night – Lin Tianyu's Apartment**

He lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, Su Qing's words echoing in his mind. *You're not alone.* It was such a simple thing, but it meant more than she could know.

His phone buzzed. Xiaoran.

*Therapy was good today. Dr. Wu says I'm making progress. Also, Mom made your favorite dish and we all pretended you were here. It was sad but also nice? I don't know how to explain.*

He smiled and typed: *I know exactly what you mean. Glad you're doing well. Tell Mom I miss her cooking.*

*I will. Sleep well, gege.*

*You too, little sister.*

He set the phone aside and closed his eyes. In the command space, Athena was monitoring a dozen threads – Wang Chao's social media, Chen Jie's equipment deliveries, Dr. Wu's lease negotiations, Zhao Ting's legal updates. The machine never slept, never tired, never stopped working.

But Lin Tianyu was human. And humans needed rest.

He slept.
