[The Omniverse - Abyssal Outpost 42]
In the muddy, blood-stained courtyard of Abyssal Outpost 42, Leo the indebted hero wiped a mixture of sweat and Void-Spider ichor from his visor. He was exhausted, but he was surviving. His Abyssal Broadsword Pro—powered by the overpriced dongle adapter he was forced to buy—was holding up.
"Just three more shifts," Leo muttered to himself, swinging the blade to clear the mud. "If I skip meals, I can finally make the minimum interest payment on my student loan."
Suddenly, the glowing blue Abyssal OS microchip embedded in the hilt of his sword flashed with a blinding, neon-magenta light.
A holographic progress bar projected into the air above the sword.
[MANDATORY OVER-THE-AIR FIRMWARE UPDATE: REALITY OS 4.0. DOWNLOADING...]
"Wait, what? No, cancel!" Leo panicked, tapping the hilt. "I'm about to drop into a Sector 7 raid!"
The progress bar instantly snapped to 100%.
[UPDATE COMPLETE. REBOOTING HARDWARE.]
The sword hummed, vibrating violently in Leo's grip. But when the light faded, the blade felt incredibly heavy. The sharp, kinetic edge dulled to a pathetic flicker. Leo swung the sword at a wooden training dummy, but the blade bounced off with a sluggish, depressing thud. The mana gauge plunged from full to zero in a single strike.
A sleek, obsidian portal ripped open in the courtyard.
Victor Thorne stepped out, his impeccably tailored midnight-blue suit pristine against the grim backdrop of the company town. Seraphina stood a half-step behind him, her violet eyes scanning the logistics data on her silver clipboard.
"Principal Thorne!" Leo screamed in despair. "Your software update just ruined my sword! The battery drains instantly, and the processing speed is completely throttled!"
"It isn't ruined, Leo," Victor said smoothly, taking a slow sip of his black coffee. "It is optimized."
Leo stared in utter disbelief. "Optimized?! It can't even cut wood!"
Applying his signature Corporate Twist, Victor didn't use a spell to silence the hero. He used consumer tech logic.
"Your Abyssal Broadsword Pro is a legacy device," Victor tapped his gold-nibbed pen against the Tycoon's Ledger. "The mythril pathways are degrading. To prevent unexpected shutdowns during combat, Reality OS 4.0 dynamically throttles the magical output of older models to preserve battery health. We intentionally slowed your sword down for your own safety."
"You slowed it down to force me to buy a new one!" Leo yelled, realizing the trap.
"I cannot control the rapid pace of innovation," Victor smiled a ruthless, calculating smile that cared only for the bottom line.
Seraphina pushed her glasses up her nose. "Conveniently, the new Abyssal Broadsword Max launched this morning. It features a triple-core mana processor and is fully compatible with the new operating system. Retail price: One hundred thousand Pantheon Bucks."
Leo looked at his bricked, useless sword. He looked at the looming entrance to the dungeon. If he went in with his old sword, he would be slaughtered, dropping to the bottom 10% of the Stack Ranking and losing his soul to the Ledger.
Tears of absolute financial despair welling in his eyes, Leo walked over to the vending machine and swiped his corporate ID card, plunging himself into another massive micro-loan to buy a sword that looked exactly like his old one.
"Planned obsolescence," Victor murmured, checking his gold pocket watch. "The greatest recurring revenue model ever invented. Ship the new inventory, Seraphina."
