Chapter 1 - Unnamed

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

Page 1: Dust, Dreams, and a Hedge Knight

The sun beat down on the dusty roads of Westeros as a young man of towering height, known as Dunk, buried his old master under an ancient oak tree. Dunk was no high-born lord; he was a simple squire to an old "Hedge Knight"—a landless warrior who lived under the hedges of the open road. With his master gone, Dunk took up the old man's dented armor and his sword. He decided he would no longer be just a squire. He would be Ser Duncan the Tall.

While stopping at an inn, he encountered a strange, bald-headed boy with bright, defiant eyes. The boy called himself "Egg" and begged to be Dunk's squire. Dunk, weary and cautious, initially refused, but the boy's persistence won him over. Together, they set off for the tourney at Ashford Meadow, where Dunk hoped to win enough silver to keep his horse fed and his belly full.

At Ashford, the fields were crowded with the silken pavilions of great lords and cruel princes. Dunk quickly realized that the world of knights was not as chivalrous as the songs claimed. He crossed paths with Prince Aerion Targaryen, a sadistic royal who believed his "dragon blood" made him superior to all.

However, a massive secret was about to be revealed. Dunk's little squire, Egg, was not a common beggar. His real name was Aegon Targaryen, the youngest prince of the realm! He had shaved his head to hide his distinctive silver-gold hair so he could travel the world and learn how to be a "true man" away from the comforts of the Red Keep. Dunk was terrified to realize he was traveling with royalty, but Egg insisted that Dunk was the only honest man he had ever met.

The story took a dark turn when Prince Aerion began to torment a humble puppeteer girl. Driven by a sense of justice that most knights lacked, Dunk struck the Prince to defend her. Attacking a royal was a crime punishable by losing a hand or death. Dunk demanded a "Trial by Combat," but Aerion twisted the rules into a Trial by Seven—a legendary and rare battle where seven knights must fight on each side.

Dunk had no friends among the lords, and it seemed he would face the King's Guard alone. But his honor had touched others. To everyone's shock, Prince Baelor "Breakspear", the heir to the Iron Throne, decided to fight by Dunk's side, believing in his innocence. Along with a few other brave knights inspired by Dunk's courage, the two sides met on the field. The clash of steel and the roar of the crowd filled the air in a brutal, bloody melee.

The battle was fierce. Dunk was battered and bruised, nearly losing his life to the Prince's superior training. However, using his raw strength and the wrestling skills he learned in the slums of Flea Bottom, Dunk managed to force Aerion to yield. Dunk had won his freedom and his honor, but the victory came at a terrible cost—Prince Baelor had fallen in the fray.

The King offered Dunk a place in the royal palace, but Dunk knew he had more to learn. He chose to remain a Hedge Knight, traveling the dusty roads of the Seven Kingdoms to protect the innocent. By his side remained Egg, the boy who would one day become King Aegon V. Together, they rode into the sunset, starting a journey that would be sung about for centuries—the tale of a true knight and the prince who learned to lead by walking among his people.
