Chapter 1 - Ashes of Her Heart

Chapter 1: The Girl Who Lost Everything

The morning sun crept slowly into the small, quiet room, slipping through the thin, faded curtains like a gentle whisper. The light fell softly on the old wooden bed where a young girl lay curled up, holding a worn-out pillow tightly to her chest.

Elena Carter opened her eyes.

For a few seconds, she didn't move. She just stared at the ceiling, her eyes calm but heavy like someone who had already lived too much life for her age.

Then reality settled in.

Another day.

Another struggle.

She slowly sat up, pushing her long dark hair away from her face. The room was small, very small. Just a single bed, a wooden chair, a tiny table, and a cracked mirror hanging on the wall. It wasn't much, but it was hers.

And that alone meant everything.

Elena let out a quiet breath and reached for the small photo frame beside her bed. Her fingers brushed gently over the glass.

It was a picture of a woman.

Beautiful. Warm. Smiling.

Her mother.

"Good morning, Mom," she whispered softly, her voice barely louder than the wind.

Her eyes lingered on the picture for a moment longer before she placed it back carefully, as if it were something fragile… something sacred.

That picture was all she had left.

The Life She Never Chose

There was a time when Elena Carter lived in a house filled with laughter.

A big house.

A warm home.

A loving mother.

A father who used to smile.

But that life had ended a long time ago.

She was only ten when her mother died.

Too young to understand death.

Too young to understand loss.

But old enough to feel the emptiness it left behind.

After the funeral, everything changed.

Her father changed.

The man who once carried her on his shoulders… who once called her his little princess… became quiet, distant, and cold.

And then, just one year later

He remarried.

That was the beginning of her downfall.

Vivian Carter walked into their home like a calm storm, elegant, beautiful, and dangerous in ways Elena didn't understand at first.

And with her came Chloe.

Same age.

Same school.

But nothing alike.

Where Elena was gentle, Chloe was sharp.

Where Elena was kind, Chloe was cruel.

At first, Elena tried.

She tried to be a good daughter.

A good sister.

She tried to smile.

To accept them.

To belong.

But some people don't come into your life to love you, they come to replace you

The Fall

It didn't happen all at once. It was slow, careful, calculated.

Vivian took control of the house first.

Then the staff.

Then the decisions.

And eventually…

Her father.

"Chloe deserves this more."

"Elena is too soft."

"You're spoiling her."

"She needs to learn life the hard way."

Words like poison.

Words that slowly erased her.

Elena remembered the day everything was taken from her.

She was sixteen.

Still in her school uniform.

Still holding onto hope.

Vivian stood in the living room, her arms crossed, her expression calm.

Chloe sat beside her, smiling.

Her father stood there too.

Silent.

Cold.

"Pack your things," Vivian said simply.

Elena blinked. "What…?"

"You heard me," Chloe added, her voice dripping with mockery. "This house is not for you anymore."

Elena turned to her father, her heart pounding. "Dad…?"

But he didn't look at her.

"Go," he said quietly.

That was all.

One word.

One moment.

And her world ended.

Thrown Away

She left that house with a small bag and a broken heart.

No money.

No support.

No family.

Just memories.

The same house that once held her laughter now stood behind her like a stranger.

And the people inside it, no longer belonged to her.

Back to the Present

Elena blinked away the memory and stood up.

She didn't have time to think about the past.

The past didn't pay bills.

She walked to the small bucket in the corner, splashed some water on her face, and stared at herself in the cracked mirror.

Her reflection looked back at her.

Simple.

Tired.

But still standing.

"I'm okay," she whispered.

Even if she wasn't.

A Life of Survival

By 7:00 AM, Elena was already out of her apartment.

The streets were waking up.

People rushing.

Cars moving.

Life going on.

And she was just another face in the crowd.

She walked quickly, her bag hanging over her shoulder, heading toward the small café where she worked.

It wasn't a fancy place.

Just a small downtown café-bar that stayed open longer than most.

But it paid her.

And that was enough.

"Morning, Lena!" a voice called as she stepped inside.

It was Mrs. D'Souza, the owner.

A kind woman in her late fifties who had given Elena a job when no one else would.

"Good morning, ma," Elena replied with a small smile.

"You're early again."

"I like starting early."

Mrs. D'Souza shook her head. "Or maybe you just don't like resting."

Elena smiled faintly but said nothing.

Because resting meant thinking.

And thinking meant remembering.

Between Dreams and Reality

By afternoon, Elena had already served dozens of customers.

Coffee.

Snacks.

Drinks.

Smiles she didn't feel.

Because in her world, attitude could cost you your job.

And her job was survival.

Later that day, she changed into her second uniform.

Night shift.

Bartender.

It paid more.

And she needed every extra naira she could get.

School fees.

Rent.

Food.

Life.

She was a college student, studying Business Management.

Sometimes, she found it ironic.

She was studying how to run companies…

When one had been stolen from her

The Weight She Carried

That evening, as she wiped down the counter, Elena paused for a moment.

Her eyes drifted to the window.

The sky was slowly turning orange.

Another sunset.

Another day gone.

"Mom…" she whispered again under her breath.

She wondered sometimes—

If her mother could see her now.

Would she be proud?

Or heartbroken?

Unseen by the World

Customers came and went.

Laughter filled the room.

Music played softly in the background.

But Elena felt invisible.

Like a shadow moving quietly through life.

No one knew her story.

No one knew what she had lost.

To them, she was just—

A waitress.

A bartender.

A girl behind a counter.

Nothing more.

But Fate Was Watching

Somewhere far from her small world…

In a place filled with luxury, power, and wealth—

A man sat in silence.

A man whose life was about to collide with hers.

A man who had everything

Except peace.

And before the night ended…

Their worlds would meet.

In a way neither of them expected.
