(Ruby's POV)
The letter arrived on a Monday.
I was in the conservatory, watering the orchids, when Mrs. MacLeod brought it in. The envelope was thick, cream-colored, with the logo of a magazine I didn't recognize. The paper felt expensive.
"For you," she said. "From London."
I set down the watering can and opened it.
Dear Mrs. Sterling,
I am writing to request an interview with you and your husband for a feature article in our magazine. We are interested in your story—the rebuilding of Sterling Manor, the foundation, the garden. We believe our readers would be inspired by your journey.
Please let me know if you are interested.

I read the letter twice. Then a third time.
"Who is it from?" Mrs. MacLeod asked.
"A magazine. They want to interview us."
She nodded slowly. "Are you going to do it?"
"I don't know."
I found Nicholas in the study.
