Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Preparing for What’s Co

The village looked the same.

But I didn't.

As we stepped out of the forest, the noise of daily life returned—voices, movement, laughter—but it all felt distant. Like I was hearing it from far away.

Because now I knew what was out there.

"Hey," Pip said softly. "You good?"

"Yeah," I replied. "Just… thinking."

"About the big ugly thing that almost killed us?"

"Exactly that."

We walked toward the center of the village. This time, people noticed me more. A few turned their heads. Some whispered.

"That's the reputation thing," Pip said. "Word spreads fast."

"Great," I muttered. "Hope they don't expect me to save them already."

"Too late for that."

We entered the elder's house again.

The old man looked up immediately—as if he had been waiting.

"You have seen it," he said.

Not a question.

A statement.

I nodded. "Yeah. And I'm guessing that wasn't part of the 'beginner experience'."

The elder's expression remained calm, but his eyes sharpened slightly.

"Describe it."

I did.

The twisted body. The multiple eyes. The way it controlled the other creatures.

The silence.

When I finished, the room felt heavier.

"I see," the elder said quietly.

Pip floated closer. "You know what it is, don't you?"

The elder didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"It should not exist."

That wasn't reassuring.

I crossed my arms. "That's not helpful. What is it?"

The elder exhaled slowly. "A corruption."

I frowned. "Corruption?"

"Something has altered the natural balance of the forest," he explained. "Creatures are being changed. Controlled. Combined."

"Combined…" I repeated.

That explained its appearance.

"But what's causing it?" I asked.

"That," he said, "is the real problem."

The menu appeared again.

Quest Updated:

Investigate the Forest Disturbance

New Objective:

Prepare before confronting the Corruption

Increase strength and equipment

Gather information

I stared at it. "So basically… I'm not ready."

"No," Pip said. "Not even close."

"Thanks."

The elder stood slowly, walking toward a shelf behind him. He picked up a small pouch and handed it to me.

"For your efforts," he said.

Item Received:

50 Copper Coins

I weighed it in my hand. "Money. Finally something normal."

Pip grinned. "Now we can actually prepare."

"Like how?"

"Gear. Supplies. Maybe skills if we find the right people."

I looked at the elder. "Anyone here who can help with that?"

The elder nodded. "The blacksmith. The trainer. And the merchant."

"Of course there are," I said. "Classic setup."

Pip laughed. "Welcome to progression."

We stepped outside again.

This time, I didn't hesitate.

"Where first?" I asked.

"Blacksmith," Pip said immediately. "You need better gear."

We made our way through the village until the sound of metal striking metal rang through the air.

A small forge stood near the edge, heat radiating from it.

A broad-shouldered man hammered a glowing piece of metal, sparks flying with each strike.

He didn't look up.

"State your business," he said.

"Uh… I need better equipment," I replied.

"Everyone does," he said flatly.

Pip floated forward. "He just came back from the deep forest."

That got his attention.

The hammer stopped.

The blacksmith looked up, eyes narrowing slightly as he examined me.

"You went past the outer edge?"

"Yeah."

"And you're still alive?"

"Barely."

He smirked faintly. "Good enough."

He walked over, wiping his hands.

"What do you have?" he asked.

I showed him the dagger.

He inspected it quickly.

"Basic. Cheap. Not bad for starting out," he said. "But it won't last against stronger enemies."

"I figured."

He nodded toward a rack behind him.

"Got something better. Not free, though."

"Of course not."

I opened the pouch slightly.

"50 copper," I said. "That enough?"

He shrugged. "Depends on what you want. Weapon or armor."

I hesitated.

Pip leaned in. "Weapon first. You need damage."

"Yeah," I agreed.

The blacksmith nodded and walked to the rack, pulling out a slightly longer blade.

Simple.

But sharper.

Stronger.

Item Available:

Reinforced Iron Dagger

Increased attack power

Better durability

"This will suit you," he said.

I took it.

Even just holding it felt different.

Balanced.

Reliable.

"I'll take it."

The coins changed hands.

Item Acquired:

Reinforced Iron Dagger

"Don't waste it," the blacksmith said, already turning back to his forge.

"I won't," I replied.

As we walked away, I tested the grip.

"Feels better," I said.

"It is better," Pip replied. "Now you won't break your weapon mid-fight."

"Good to know."

"Next," Pip continued, "we find the trainer."

"Trainer?"

"Yeah," he said. "Skills aren't just given. Some are taught."

That caught my attention.

"Lead the way."

We found the trainer near an open field just outside the village.

A woman stood there, watching a few villagers practice basic movements.

Her posture was sharp.

Precise.

The moment we approached, her eyes locked onto me.

"You," she said. "You've fought recently."

"Yeah," I replied.

"Show me."

"No introduction? Just straight to it?"

"Time is valuable," she said.

Fair enough.

I stepped forward and took a stance.

Not perfect.

But not bad.

She watched carefully.

"Again," she said.

I moved.

Dodged.

Struck.

Used Energy Strike lightly.

She nodded once.

"Unrefined," she said. "But effective."

"I'll take that as a compliment."

"It is not," she replied. "But it can become one."

Pip snorted.

I ignored him.

"Can you train me?" I asked.

"Yes," she said. "For a price."

"Of course."

I sighed and checked what coins I had left.

Not much.

She noticed.

"I will teach you one basic technique," she said. "Consider it an investment."

The menu appeared.

Skill Learned:

Quick Step

Short burst movement

Improves dodge timing

A sudden clarity hit me.

Like my body understood something new.

Movement felt… sharper.

Faster.

"That'll help," Pip said.

"Yeah," I said. "A lot."

The trainer crossed her arms.

"Return when you are ready to learn properly," she said.

"We will," I replied.

As we walked away, I felt it again.

That difference.

Stronger weapon.

New skill.

Better understanding.

But still…

Not enough.

I looked toward the forest.

"We're getting ready," I said.

Pip nodded.

"Yeah."

"But next time…"

I tightened my grip on the dagger.

"We're not running."
