Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 - "First Connection"

ARC 1: DEBUT

Chapter 1 - "First Connection"

The room was small, but it had everything Hana needed. A microphone, a drawing tablet, a ring light, and a computer that she had saved up for three years. On the wall behind her, a hand-painted poster read: "You are enough." She had written it herself on a quiet Sunday morning when she still did not know what she wanted to do with her life.

That was six months ago.

Now, Hana Mizuki — or rather, her virtual avatar Lumina — was about to press the "Go Live" button for the first time.

Her avatar was a girl with pale silver hair, glowing blue eyes, and small star-shaped accessories floating around her ears. The design was entirely her own — every line, every color choice, every subtle detail. It had taken her four months to accomplish the final look. She had redrawn the face alone approximately thirty times.

"Okay," she said quietly to herself. "This is it."

Her hand hovered over the mouse. The stream title was already set: "Lumina's First Stream — Hello, World!" The waiting screen showed her avatar standing in a soft field of animated stars, looping gently.

She clicked.

The viewer count read: 1.

Then 2.

Then 5.

Hana blinked. She had expected zero for the first ten minutes, honestly. She had told nobody about this stream except her younger sister, who probably forgot.

"Um— hello?" Her voice came out softer than she intended. She cleared her throat. "Hello, everyone. I am... Lumina. This is my first stream, so I am a little nervous, I will admit."

The chat moved.

StellarDust99: hi lumina!!

moonbyte: oh a new vtuber! cute design

zzznocturn: first stream hype!!

Hana felt something warm expand inside her chest. Real people. Real people were here, watching.

"Oh— you are really here!" She laughed, and it came out a little embarrassed. "I was afraid nobody would show up. Thank you so much for coming."

StellarDust99: of course we came! the waiting screen was pretty

moonbyte: did you draw your own avatar??

"Yes, I did!" Hana said, and her voice finally settled into something comfortable. "I drew everything myself. It took a long time, but I really wanted it to feel like me. Like— the me that I am on the inside, I suppose."

zzznocturn: that's so wholesome

CelestialKai: the stars around her ears are a nice touch

"Thank you, Kai!" She pointed at the camera, even though nobody could see her real hand. Her avatar did the gesture instead, animated smoothly through her face-tracking software. "Those little stars are actually my favorite part of the design. I almost removed them three times because I thought they looked too much. But then I decided — no. They stay."

moonbyte: good decision. very cute

The viewer count had climbed to 23.

Hana took a breath. She had prepared a loose plan for the stream: introduce herself, explain what kind of content she wanted to make, and play a short game. Simple. Manageable. She had written a small cheat sheet on a sticky note beside her monitor.

"So," she continued, "let me introduce myself properly. I am Lumina. I am a new independent VTuber — which means I am not part of any agency or corporation. Just me, my room, and this computer."

StellarDust99: indie vtuber best vtuber

zzznocturn: what kind of content are you planning?

"Great question!" The sticky note said games, drawing, chatting. "I want to play games — mostly cozy or interesting story games. I also love drawing, so I might do art streams sometimes. And honestly? I love just... talking with people. Like this. It feels really comfortable already."

CelestialKai: that sounds great. what's your first game today?

"Today I am going to play something called Stardew Valley. Have you all heard of it?"

The chat exploded.

moonbyte: YESSS

StellarDust99: STARDEW LETS GO

zzznocturn: best game ever made. change my mind

CelestialKai: have you played it before?

Hana laughed — a real, genuine laugh, not a performed one. "No! This is my first time. I know, I know. Please do not be too harsh on me if I do something embarrassing."

StellarDust99: we will ABSOLUTELY bully you lovingly

moonbyte: that's literally what chat is for

"I was afraid of that," she said, still smiling. Her avatar's expression mirrored her perfectly — the face-tracking software was picking up every subtle movement. She had spent two weeks calibrating it.

She opened the game.

The familiar pixel-art opening screen appeared on stream. A cheerful melody played through her speakers.

"Oh, it is so pretty," she said softly, almost to herself. "I love pixel art. Something about it feels very... honest. Like every pixel was placed with intention."

zzznocturn: lumina is already poetic and it's been 10 minutes

CelestialKai: I think I found my new comfort streamer

moonbyte: same honestly

Hana read the chat and felt something she hadn't felt in a long time: a sense of belonging. Not the kind you force, not the kind you perform. The real kind. The quiet, significant kind that grows slowly, like a plant finding light.

She clicked "New Game."

"Alright, everyone," she said, her voice warm and steady now. "Let's build something together."

The viewer count read 47.

And somewhere in that small number, four people — StellarDust99, moonbyte, zzznocturn, and CelestialKai — decided, without saying it aloud, that they would come back tomorrow.
