Chapter 5 - Something stirs awake

The shift didn't end.

It spread.

Not like an explosion—but like a ripple through still water, invisible yet undeniable.

Aiden walked through the academy halls as if nothing had changed.

Students passed him.

Some whispered.

Some laughed.

Some didn't even notice him.

But others…

Paused.

A group of boys who had been joking loudly suddenly went quiet as he passed.

"…Why does it feel cold?" one muttered.

"There's no wind…"

Another rubbed his arm. "Did you feel that?"

"Feel what?"

"…I don't know."

They looked around.

Nothing was there.

No aura.

No visible magic.

And yet—

Something pressed against their instincts.

A quiet, primal warning.

Stay away.

Aiden kept walking.

"…I'm not doing that on purpose," he thought.

"I am aware."

"…Can you stop it?"

A pause.

"…No."

Aiden's expression didn't change.

"…That's a problem."

"Yes."

Training resumed shortly after.

Students gathered in a wide arena, instructors overseeing multiple groups at once.

Aiden stood among them, hands relaxed at his sides.

Trying to look normal.

Trying to feel normal.

It wasn't working.

"Pair up!"

Students quickly formed groups.

Except—

No one stepped toward Aiden.

A small gap formed around him.

Subtle.

But obvious.

"…Seriously?" he muttered.

"They sense you," the voice said.

"I'm suppressing everything!"

"Not everything."

Aiden frowned slightly.

Before he could respond—

"I'll take him."

The voice was sharp. Confident.

Lyra.

She stepped forward, rolling her shoulders slightly, a faint heat radiating from her again.

The others watched from a distance.

Elara. Seris. Mira. Nyx.

All observing.

"Of course you will," Aiden muttered under his breath.

Lyra smirked. "What was that?"

"Nothing."

They stepped into the center.

"Simple spar," the instructor called. "No serious injuries."

Lyra cracked her neck.

"Try not to fall over this time, pretty boy."

Aiden sighed.

"…Here we go again."

"Begin!"

Lyra moved instantly.

Fast.

Faster than before.

This time—

She wasn't testing.

She was serious.

Aiden's perception slowed again.

"…She's trying to provoke me."

"Yes."

"…I really don't want to respond."

"Your control will be tested."

Lyra's fist came in—

Aiden stepped aside.

Cleaner this time.

More precise.

Too precise.

Lyra's eyes narrowed.

"…There it is."

She spun—kicking this time.

Aiden raised his arm.

Blocked.

A small shockwave rippled outward.

Not from Lyra.

From him.

Tiny.

But wrong.

The air bent slightly.

The ground beneath Aiden's feet cracked—just a little.

Silence hit the arena.

Lyra jumped back instantly.

"…What was that?"

Aiden froze.

"…That wasn't me."

"It was."

"…I didn't mean to."

"Intent is becoming irrelevant."

Across the arena—

All five girls felt it.

Clearly.

This time, there was no mistaking it.

Mira's smile faded completely.

"…Okay… that's not normal at all."

Nyx's expression hardened. "That wasn't magic."

Seris whispered, almost to herself—

"…It's waking up."

Elara didn't speak.

But her aura—

Faintly—

Reacted.

Even the instructor noticed.

She stepped forward slowly.

Tall.

Elegant.

Silver hair flowing down her back like liquid light.

Her red eyes—sharp, piercing—locked onto Aiden.

The entire arena seemed to quiet just from her presence.

"…Interesting."

Her voice was calm.

Measured.

But beneath it—

Something stirred.

She walked closer.

Each step deliberate.

Each movement controlled.

Aiden felt it immediately.

"…She's strong."

"Very."

"…Different from the others."

"Yes."

Aiden met her gaze.

For the first time since arriving—

Someone looked at him…

Not with curiosity.

Not with dismissal.

But with recognition.

"…What are you?" she asked quietly.

The question wasn't rhetorical.

Aiden held her gaze.

"…A student."

A pause.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"…No."

The air shifted.

Subtly.

Dangerously.

Behind her calm expression, something ancient brushed against something equally ancient.

Not equal in power.

But enough to notice.

"…You're not."

Around them—

Students felt it.

That same unease from before—

But stronger.

Heavier.

Even the boys who had mocked Aiden earlier felt their throats tighten.

"…Why do I feel like I shouldn't be here…" one whispered.

"This… isn't normal…"

No one understood it.

But their instincts screamed.

Back in the arena—

Lyra stepped back further now.

For the first time—

She wasn't smirking.

"…He didn't move like that before."

Nyx spoke quietly. "He's been holding back."

Mira crossed her arms slowly. "…That's not holding back."

Seris' eyes stayed locked on Aiden.

"…That's suppression failing."

The instructor stopped just a few steps away from him.

Her silver hair shifted slightly as a faint pressure filled the air.

"Answer me," she said softly.

Her red eyes glowed faintly now.

Not threatening.

But probing.

"…What are you hiding?"

Aiden stood still.

Composed.

But inside—

"…She can feel it."

"Yes."

"…More than the others."

"Yes."

Aiden exhaled slowly.

"…I can't answer that."

A pause.

The air tightened.

Then—

Unexpectedly—

She smiled.

Not warmly.

But knowingly.

"…I see."

She stepped back.

Just slightly.

But it was a decision.

A choice.

"To observe."

She turned away.

"Match over."

Just like that.

No winner.

No conclusion.

But everything had changed.

As the students slowly relaxed—

Whispers spread.

Fear lingered.

Confusion grew.

And at the edge of it all—

Five girls stood watching.

No longer dismissive.

No longer amused.

Now—

Interested.

Careful.

Alert.

Aiden walked away from the arena again.

Same as before.

Calm.

Controlled.

But now—

He could feel it.

Eyes everywhere.

"…This is getting complicated."

"Yes."

"…I can't stay invisible anymore."

"No."

Aiden glanced back slightly.

The silver-haired instructor stood at a distance, her red eyes still fixed on him.

"…And she's going to be a problem."

"Yes."

Aiden sighed quietly.

"…Figures."

Inside him—

The ancient presence stirred once more.

Not fully awake.

But no longer sleeping.

And now—

Others had felt it.

Which meant one thing.

It wasn't a secret anymore.

It was a countdown.
