Chapter 1 - CHAPTER ONE

THE WHITE ROOM

"We need a look for the 'Resonance' tour that screams 'vulnerable yet untouchable,'" Claudia Vance announced, her voice like a chilling draft. She stood in the stark, white lobby of the newly renovated Vance Records building. The space smelled of lavender and ambition.

Elara sat on a sleek bench nearby, carefully picking at the sleeve of an oversized cashmere sweater. She said nothing. She'd learned long ago that her input on "the look" was irrelevant.

The manager of a rising boutique designer, "G. Cole," was there for the pitch. His name was Toby, a hyperactive man who clutched a leather portfolio like a shield. "Gabriel specializes in unique textiles, Mrs. Vance. He has a new process... we call it 'moon-dyeing.' It gives fabric a luminous, silver sheen. It doesn't just reflect light; it absorbs it."

Elara's head snapped up. Toby didn't know it, but he had used the exact metaphor her therapist had used for her: absorbing the world without reflecting it.

Claudia waved a dismissive hand. "We need iconic. We need tragedy with a high-fashion edge."

"What if..." Elara's voice cracked slightly, used to silence in these rooms. "What if it's just beautiful? What if it's so beautiful it hurts?"

Claudia looked at her daughter as if she'd suggested singing nursery rhymes. "This is a business, Elara."

Toby, sensing a slight crack in the impenetrable Vance armor, pushed a sample of the silk across the table. It was a liquid silver material, pooling like heavy water. It was incredibly fine, yet held its own weight. It looked like the intersection of science and magic.

Elara reached out. The moment her fingertips brushed the silk, she felt a profound sense of stillness. It was cool, heavier than it looked, and unbelievably smooth. It was the first thing in months that felt real.

"I want him," Elara said, her eyes fixed on the fabric.

Claudia looked from the fabric, to her daughter, to Toby. She saw the potential marketing angle: Rising Star Endorses Underground Genius. "Very well. Have Mr. Cole present a capsule collection by the end of the week."
