Chapter 19 - CHAPTER 19:ALMOST IN THE SAME ROOM

The restaurant was warm and elegant, filled with soft music and the clinking of glasses.

Zoey sat across from Daniel, a contract folder between them. The business meeting had gone better than expected. The client had signed. The deal was sealed.

Success.

Daniel leaned back in his chair, smiling. "You handled that perfectly."

Zoey laughed softly. "We handled it."

He shook his head. "No. That was all you."

She rolled her eyes playfully, but warmth spread through her chest. It felt good to be seen.

They ordered dessert to celebrate. The tension of business slowly melted into casual conversation. They talked about random childhood memories. Bad fashion phases. Embarrassing school stories.

Zoey laughed — a real laugh.

For a moment, she felt light.

But then…

A strange feeling crept into her chest.

Subtle.

Unsettling.

Like being watched.

Like something familiar had entered the room.

She glanced around casually.

Nothing obvious.

Still, her heartbeat shifted.

Meanwhile, at the entrance of the same restaurant, Ryan walked in beside Maya.

"Smells good already," Maya said, smiling as the hostess led them to their table.

They were seated near the middle of the restaurant.

Close.

Too close.

Ryan pulled out his chair, distracted for reasons he couldn't explain.

He felt it too.

That shift in the air.

That quiet pull in his chest.

He scanned the room briefly but didn't see her.

Because Zoey was directly behind him.

Just one row of tables away.

Neither of them knew.

Fate was almost laughing.

Back at her table, Zoey's fingers tightened around her glass.

"I'm going to use the restroom," she said suddenly.

Daniel looked up. "Everything okay?"

"Yeah. Just… I'll be right back."

She stood, smoothing her dress, trying to calm the sudden restlessness inside her.

Why does it feel like he's here?

That thought alone made her stomach flip.

On the other side of the room, Ryan shifted in his seat.

Maya was talking about something — a new campaign idea — but he wasn't fully listening.

His chest felt tight.

Unsettled.

"I'll be back," he said abruptly.

Maya blinked. "Bathroom?"

"Yeah."

He stood, adjusting his jacket.

And that's when it happened.

Zoey turned the corner toward the restroom hallway at the exact moment Ryan stepped into it from the opposite side.

They stopped.

Mid-step.

Mid-breath.

Time didn't slow down.

It stopped.

Shock flashed across both their faces.

Three years.

Three whole years.

And somehow, the first thing Zoey noticed was that he looked the same.

Maybe a little sharper. More mature.

But those eyes?

Still his.

Ryan felt his heartbeat slam against his ribs.

Zoey.

Not a memory.

Not a picture.

Not a post online.

Her.

Right there.

"Hi," she said first, barely above a whisper.

Her voice.

He had imagined this moment so many times.

He never imagined he'd forget how to speak.

"Hi," he finally replied.

Silence wrapped around them.

Not awkward.

Just heavy.

Butterflies exploded violently in Zoey's stomach. The kind she hadn't felt on any date in three years.

Ryan noticed the way she tucked her hair slightly behind her ear — a nervous habit she'd always had.

"You look…" he started, then stopped.

"Different?" she offered softly.

He shook his head. "Good."

Her lips curved into the smallest smile.

"Thank you."

Another pause.

They both stepped slightly to the side at the same time, almost colliding.

They laughed quietly.

And suddenly, the tension softened just enough to breathe.

"What are you doing here?" he asked.

"Business meeting. With… someone from work."

She hated how careful her words sounded.

"You?"

"Lunch. With someone."

There it was.

The unspoken.

They both nodded.

Processing.

Respecting.

Pretending it didn't sting.

Zoey swallowed. "How have you been?"

"Busy," he said. Then after a beat, more honestly, "Good. You?"

"Good."

Another lie exchanged politely.

But their eyes told a different story.

Three years of unsaid apologies hung between them.

Ryan's jaw tightened slightly. "I didn't expect to see you."

"Me neither."

Silence again.

But this one felt softer.

Almost fragile.

He wanted to say it.

I'm sorry.

He wanted to ask it.

Are you happy?

But pride and fear stood like walls between them.

Zoey glanced toward the restaurant area. "I should go."

"Yeah. Me too."

Neither of them moved immediately.

Then Ryan cleared his throat.

"Can I…?" He hesitated. "Can I have your number? I mean— if that's okay."

Her heart skipped.

Three years ago, they had deleted each other like it would erase the feeling.

And now here they were.

Starting again with ten digits.

She nodded slowly.

"Okay."

He handed her his phone. Their fingers brushed slightly.

Electric.

Familiar.

Dangerous.

She typed her number carefully.

He saved it.

For a second, their eyes met again.

So much history.

So much unfinished.

"I'm glad you're doing well," he said quietly.

"You too."

They stepped past each other.

Not touching.

But close enough to feel the warmth.

Zoey walked back toward the main dining area, heart pounding wildly.

Ryan stood there for a second longer, exhaling shakily.

That wasn't supposed to happen.

When Zoey returned to the table, Daniel was already standing.

"Everything okay?" he asked gently.

"Yeah," she said, forcing calm into her voice.

They left the restaurant together, Daniel placing a protective hand on her lower back as they walked out.

Ryan returned to his seat just in time to see it.

Through the large glass window.

Zoey stepping into Daniel's car.

Laughing softly at something he said.

Daniel opening the door for her.

Ryan's chest tightened painfully.

Maya noticed his silence. "You okay?"

"Yeah," he replied automatically.

But his eyes were still fixed outside.

Watching the car drive away.

He had her number now.

But seeing her with someone else made one thing painfully clear:

Time hadn't erased anything.

It had just made everything more complicated.

And as Zoey sat in Daniel's passenger seat, staring out the window with her phone clutched tightly in her hand—

One thought echoed in both their hearts at the exact same moment:

This isn't over.
