Both teams regrouped instinctively.
The Seraphs formed around the Haikitium while the Saints close ranks opposite them.
Neither side had gained ground nor had a side intended to retreat.
The train thundered through the night as the battle entered a deadly stalemate, each passing second bringing them closer to the next obstacle on the tracks—and forcing both teams to decide whether to risk everything for the Haikitium or find another way to claim victory.
The battle reached its breaking point.
Deborah slammed Rafael through the reinforced transport carriage, tearing open the wall in a shower of twisted steel.
At the same moment Malak's kinetic blast struck the magnetic cradle securing the transport case.
The two impacts collided.
CRACK!
Every fighter froze.
A thin fracture spread across the case.
Blue light poured from within.
"No!" Aziel shouted.
The containment seals failed.
With an explosive hiss, the lid blasted open.
Instead of raw ore, twelve reinforced capsules shot into the air, each containing a concentrated sample of purified Haikitium glowing an intense sapphire blue.
For a second, nobody moved, then chaos erupted.
Everyone lunged at once. Elara caught two before they struck the roof.
Rebecca intercepted another in midair.
Malak slid across the train, snatching one with each hand before tossing them toward Seraphina.
Tarma vanished into camouflage, emerging beside Aziel and stealing a capsule from his grasp.
Rafael caught one as it bounced across the carriage before Deborah tackled him through another wall.
Capsules rolled across the train.
Some disappeared beneath boots.
Others bounced between combatants as punches and explosions shook the speeding locomotive.
When the last capsule finally came to rest...
Aziel counted quickly. "Six."
Across the train Deborah did the same.
She looked up. " Do we retreat?"
For several tense seconds neither side attacked. There was nothing left to gain. The objective had already been divided.
Philip's voice crackled through the Seraphs' communicators. "Disengage."
Almost simultaneously another voice echoed through the Saints' headsets.
"The mission is complete. Return."
Neither side lowered their guard.
Slowly…
The distance between them grew.
Elara lifted into the air carrying two capsules.
Rebecca disappeared into the river beside the tracks.
The remaining Saints withdrew one by one.
The Seraph helicopter descended.
The Saints' extraction jet pierced the clouds from the opposite direction.
Within moments both aircraft vanished into the night.
The freight train continued alone beneath the moon.
Its roof torn apart. Its cargo gone.
For the first time since the war began...
Neither the Sanctum nor the Seraphs had truly won.
And neither had truly lost.
Sanctum
The massive blast doors slid open as the Sanctum's transport jet descended into the underground hangar. Its engines slowly powered down before the rear ramp lowered with a metallic hiss.
Deborah led the six Saints down the ramp, each carrying one of the sealed Haikitium capsules recovered from the train.
Waiting at the end of the hangar was the Savior, his hands clasped behind his back.
His expression revealed nothing. "Report."
Deborah stepped forward. "The Seraphs secured the remaining six capsules."
For a brief moment, silence filled the hangar. The Savior simply extended his hand.
Deborah placed one of the capsules into it.
The brilliant blue crystal glowed through the reinforced container, bathing his face in an eerie light. "Charles."
The lead scientist approached immediately, accepting the capsule with both hands before examining it carefully.
His eyes lit up with excitement. "It's remarkably pure..." He looked toward the other scientists.
"Take the remaining samples to Laboratory Three. Begin purification immediately." The scientists hurried away carrying the six capsules.
The Savior turned back to Charles.
"Will it be enough?"
Charles smiled faintly. "Yes, sir."
"It isn't the quantity we hoped for, but the purity is exceptional. Once refined, it will provide more than enough Haikitium for the next phase."
"And the child?"
Charles nodded confidently. "The fetus has adapted exceptionally well to the periodic Haikitium doses we've been administering. His body no longer rejects the compound."
He looked toward the laboratory beyond the glass observation window. "Once purification is complete, we'll begin introducing the refined Haikitium in carefully measured quantities. His physiology should absorb it naturally."
The Savior watched the scientists disappear into the laboratory. "When will the process begin?"
"As soon as purification is complete."
The Savior remained silent for several seconds before speaking. "Proceed."
Charles inclined his head. "Yes, sir."
Without another word, the Savior turned and walked away.
Behind the reinforced glass, the six glowing capsules disappeared into a sterilized chamber as robotic arms came to life.
The next stage had begun.
Safe House
The Seraphs' helicopter settled onto the landing pad outside the safe house before its engines finally fell silent.
Inside, the atmosphere was noticeably lighter than it had been before the mission.
They hadn't won, but they hadn't lost either.
Aziel placed the six sealed capsules onto the conference table as Philip,
Andrew and several senior officials from the organization gathered around.
Andrew picked up one of the capsules and studied it under the light. "Remarkable..."
Philip folded his arms.
"Enough for your research?"
Andrew nodded. "It's far more than enough." He carefully returned the capsule to the table.
"We've already learned a tremendous amount from the samples we recovered months ago. These will allow us to continue our research and verify our findings."
Malak leaned against the wall. "So... we're turning ourselves into monsters again?"
Andrew shook his head with a smile. "No. Our objective has never been to create stronger soldiers."
He looked around the room. "It's to understand Haikitium better than the Sanctum does. This is a substance that shouldn't exist on earth and against all odds it keeps popping up, the sanctum knows something we don't."
One of the senior officials stepped forward.
"What should we do with the remaining capsules?"
Philip answered before Andrew could.
"They're too valuable to keep here. They'll be transferred to a secured research vault under our highest level of protection. Andrew only needs limited access for continued study. It's best we just make sure the sanctum can't get their hands in it "
The official nodded."I'll make the arrangements immediately."
Andrew looked once more at the glowing blue capsules. "They've already cost too many lives."
Philip followed his gaze. "Let's make sure they don't cost any more."
The room fell silent as the capsules were locked inside a reinforced transport case.
Neither side had claimed complete victory.
But both now possessed exactly what they needed to shape the next chapter of the war.
