Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 — The Same Route

The morning felt different. Not like school mornings filled with uniforms and strict timings. Today carried uncertainty — new beginnings wrapped in nervous excitement. At a quiet roadside bus stop, four girls waited together.Aditi adjusted her bag repeatedly, unable to stand still. Swarna leaned casually against the railing, watching traffic pass by. Priyanka checked the timetable on her phone for the fifth time.Poonam stood slightly apart. Her fingers traced the edge of her notebook while her eyes followed the movement of clouds above. College. A new place. New people.Or maybe not entirely new.The distant sound of a bus engine grew louder. The blue college bus slowed down and stopped in front of them with a sharp hiss. The door opened. The girls stepped inside — and immediately paused. Some faces were familiar.Very familiar.Near the window sat Anshu, sketchbook resting on his lap, pencil moving steadily across the page. His expression remained calm, focused, as if nothing around him mattered.Behind him were Ritik and Abhi, quietly talking, while Aditya looked outside the window, lost in thought. For a brief second, old school memories crossed everyone's minds. But no one spoke. The girls moved forward silently and chose empty seats together on the opposite side.No greetings. No smiles.Just acknowledgment through brief glances before everyone returned to their own space. The bus started moving again.Outside, the city passed in soft morning light.Inside, silence ruled — broken only by engine vibrations and occasional chatter from other students.Poonam looked out of the window, feeling both comforted and uneasy. Seeing familiar people should have made things easier… yet the distance felt new.Across the aisle, Anshu briefly looked up from his sketch. His eyes stopped on her for only a moment before returning to the page.He didn't think much of it.At least, that's what he told himself. At the next stop, two more students boarded.Aishwarya and Shreya.Aishwarya's eyes quickly scanned the bus until they landed on Anshu. A small satisfied smile appeared on her face. She walked forward and took a nearby seat without hesitation.Shreya followed, her gaze meeting Swarna's instantly. The tension was immediate.Swarna looked away first, uninterested, while Shreya smirked faintly before sitting down. The atmosphere subtly shifted.Whispers started among other students — familiar names, familiar reputations carrying over from school days.Teachers' favorites.Top students.Talented ones.Unspoken comparisons already forming. The bus continued its route toward the college campus.Sunlight filled the windows.New uniforms were replaced by casual clothes, but the same people remained — only older, quieter, and more careful. No one realized yet that this ordinary bus ride would slowly connect their lives again. Not through friendship. Not immediately through love. But through moments too small to notice… and too important to forget. The college gates appeared ahead. And with them, the beginning of a story none of them expected.
