Chapter 12 - Eyes that watched

The ceremony continued, calm on the surface, steady in structure, everything moving exactly as planned.

Zara stood beside Tunde, her hand still in his, her posture straight, her expression composed. To anyone watching, she looked like the perfect bride.

But her awareness had sharpened.

She noticed more now.

The small things.

The quiet things.

The things that didn't need to be said.

Her eyes moved across the hall again, slower this time.

Guests sat watching, some smiling, some whispering behind their hands. A few held their phones up, recording every second. Others simply observed, their expressions unreadable.

Then her gaze shifted again.

Tunde's mother.

She hadn't moved much since the ceremony began. Still seated upright, still composed, still watching.

But now—

Zara noticed something different.

A slight exchange.

A look.

It was quick.

Easy to miss.

But Zara didn't miss it.

Tunde's mother leaned slightly toward a woman seated beside her.

They spoke briefly.

Too quietly to hear.

Then both of them glanced forward.

Not at Tunde.

At Zara.

Zara held her gaze for a second longer than necessary.

Then looked away.

Her grip on her bouquet tightened slightly.

It was nothing.

Probably nothing.

Still—

It stayed in her mind.

Beside her, Tunde shifted slightly.

His attention remained forward, focused on the ceremony, on the officiant, on the moment.

He didn't notice.

Or maybe he chose not to.

Zara couldn't tell.

The officiant continued speaking, his voice steady, filling the hall with words about unity, commitment, and partnership.

The guests listened.

The room remained calm.

But Zara's thoughts were no longer as still.

She adjusted her stance slightly, shifting her weight just enough to feel grounded again.

Her eyes moved again.

This time toward the side of the hall.

More guests.

More movement.

Then—

She saw her.

Simi.

Standing near the edge of the hall.

Not seated.

Not fully part of the crowd.

Just there.

Watching.

Zara blinked once.

Simi wasn't part of the bridal party.

She hadn't been introduced earlier.

But she looked familiar in a way Zara couldn't immediately place.

Well dressed.

Elegant.

Calm.

But different from the others.

She wasn't laughing.

Wasn't talking.

Wasn't distracted.

Her attention was fixed.

Direct.

On the front.

On them.

Zara's chest tightened slightly.

Something about the way she stood felt intentional.

Like she was waiting.

Zara looked away again, trying not to overthink it.

This was a big wedding.

Many guests.

Not everyone would be familiar.

Not everyone would behave the same way.

Still—

That feeling returned.

Stronger this time.

Not loud.

Not obvious.

But present.

Beside her, Tunde adjusted his hand around hers again.

"Are you okay?" he asked quietly.

Zara turned slightly toward him.

"I'm fine," she said.

He studied her briefly.

Then nodded.

"Okay."

His voice was calm.

Reassuring.

Zara nodded once.

But her eyes moved again.

Back to where Simi stood.

She was still there.

Still watching.

Still not moving.

Zara's fingers tightened slightly around the bouquet again.

The ceremony continued.

The officiant's voice steady.

The guests attentive.

Everything still moving forward.

Exactly as planned.

But something had changed.

Zara could feel it now.

Not clearly.

Not fully.

But enough to know—

Something wasn't right.

And somewhere in the room—

Someone was waiting.
