Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Clash of Academies

The wind swept across the floating platforms of Celestalis Academy, tugging at Kael's dark hair and carrying the scent of distant seas, tinged with the faint shimmer of magic. He adjusted the straps of his staff and felt the familiar pull in his chest—the **anticipation of a new challenge**. Today wasn't a normal trial. Today, students from rival academies would arrive to compete in the **Inter-Academy Spirit Challenge**, an event held once every decade.

*"Kael,"* Lyra called, striding toward him, her boots clanging against the platforms. Her glare was sharp as ever. *"Try not to embarrass the family name. The Obsidian Dominion kids are fierce."*

Kael swallowed, his stomach twisting. The Obsidian Dominion was infamous for aggressive combat mages, each student a prodigy in their own right. Yet when he glanced at his spirits—Ylira, Grunn, and Liora—he felt a flicker of confidence.

*"We'll be fine,"* he said, though the words sounded braver than he felt.

The first portal shimmered above the courtyard, scattering prismatic light across the floating platforms. A squad of students descended, radiating dangerous energy. Kael's gaze immediately found the leaders of the Obsidian delegation:

* **Korran Draven**, a Rank B+ mage, dark robes whipping in the wind, a black feathered spirit circling him like a shadowy predator.

* **Selara Nox**, Rank B, twin fire spirits flickering at her sides, a smile of confident malice curling her lips.

* **Varick Thorn**, Rank C, a hulking battle mage commanding stone-armored golems.

The spectators murmured, sensing the tension thickening the air.

*"So these are the so-called Celestalis students?"* Korran's voice dripped with disdain. *"I expected stronger opponents."*

Lyra's glare could have cut through steel, but Kael stepped forward.

*"I may be Rank C,"* he said, calm and measured, *"but you'll see why our spirits are stronger than your arrogance."*

The rules of the challenge were simple: capture the floating spirit crystals scattered across the arena. Battle and strategy were allowed, but **killing was forbidden**. Team points would be awarded for efficiency, creativity, and spirit synergy.

Kael's heart raced as he summoned Ylira. Her agile energy flowed through him, a blur of motion. Grunn's stone body solidified beneath his command, and Liora's soft glow lit paths across the floating platforms. The Obsidian team moved instantly. Shadows stretched from Korran's hands, skimming the platforms, forcing Kael to leap and dodge. Selara ignited the air with twin fire spirits, scorching patches of the arena.

Kael realized this wasn't just a test of strength—it was a test of **fusion, timing, and coordination**.

He whispered commands.

* **Ylira:** Scout, distract, create openings.

* **Grunn:** Protect platforms, control the flow of battle.

* **Liora:** Light and guidance, heal minor injuries, reveal traps.

Then, taking a deep breath, Kael risked the impossible. He **fused all three spirits simultaneously**, a radiant aura exploding around him.

Ylira's speed allowed him to dodge Korran's shadow tendrils with impossible reflexes. Grunn's strength reinforced the platforms, sending seismic ripples that knocked back their foes. Liora's light blinded opponents briefly, revealing the positions of the remaining crystals.

Kael darted across platforms, capturing the first crystal while countering Korran's shadows with precision. To the crowd, he was **everywhere at once**, a blur of light, stone, and silver fur. Gasps rippled across the arena.

Then Korran lunged, shadows lashing like jagged blades. Kael reacted instantly, fusing **Ylira and Liora** for speed and illumination, while keeping Grunn as a defensive wall. Sparks and shards of energy erupted with every strike.

*"Not bad for a Rank C,"* Korran sneered. *"But you'll tire fast."*

Kael's mind raced. The Obsidian team had underestimated his spirit synergy. While they attacked individually, Kael **coordinated his spirits in chains**, turning each strike into a counter that rippled across the battlefield.

Within moments, Korran's tendrils were neutralized. Selara's twin fire spirits wavered. Varick's golems retreated, shaken by a precise combination of attacks. Kael had claimed the first crystal.

The crowd erupted into cheers. Panting, Kael felt the familiar thrill of **overcoming a challenge he once would have failed as Rank F**. Lyra approached, a genuine smile breaking across her face.

*"Looks like the little Eryndor isn't so little anymore,"* she said.

Kael smiled back, yet in the depths of his mind, a faint whisper stirred—the echo of a past life, the instinct of a summoner who had faced far greater foes. Somewhere in the shadows of the academy and the empire, forces that opposed the use of spirits had taken notice. The Inter-Academy Spirit Challenge was only the beginning.
