Chapter 42 - Chapter 42: The First Time Loop

Everything vanished.

Not faded.

Not collapsed.

Erased.

No ground beneath my feet.

No sound of the monster.

No echo of the laboratory tearing itself apart behind me.

Even the memory of it…

felt distant.

Unreachable.

There was only light.

Not bright.

Not blinding.

Endless.

It stretched in every direction without depth, without horizon, like existence itself had been flattened into a single, silent layer.

The air moved around me.

Slow.

Fluid.

As if I were submerged in something that wasn't water… but behaved like it.

Weightless.

Directionless.

Timeless.

For a moment..

I couldn't tell if I was breathing…

or being sustained.

A faint ripple formed beneath my feet.

Then..

a circle of light appeared.

Perfect.

Symmetrical.

Alive.

It rotated slowly.

Not randomly.

Deliberately.

Like something observing me… while pretending to be still.

A voice spoke.

Calm.

Neutral.

Unattached to form or origin.

"Welcome… to the first cycle."

The words didn't echo.

They settled.

Inside me.

I pressed my hand to my temple.

A sharp wave of dizziness hit me..

not pain…

but displacement.

My memories didn't blur.

They separated.

Fragments of moments pulling apart… only to snap back together again in the wrong order.

Behind me..

the light condensed.

A single point.

Then it unfolded.

Not like a body forming.

Like a concept remembering how to become one.

A human shape emerged.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Short silver hair.

A pale dress that drifted around her as if untouched by gravity.

Eyes glowing softly…

like light filtered through something deep… something ancient.

Sira.

But not the Sira I knew.

Not the distant presence inside the towers.

Not the voice that echoed across layers.

This version…

was closer.

Sharper.

Almost human.

And somehow..

more dangerous because of it.

She stepped toward me.

Her gaze studied me carefully..

as if she were seeing a version of me that didn't match her expectations.

"Elias opened the ring before you," she said quietly.

A pause.

Subtle.

Heavy.

"This wasn't supposed to happen."

She raised her hand.

The void responded instantly.

The space around us reshaped..

folding inward, then expanding outward..

until it formed something vast.

Circular.

Structured.

A ring.

No..

a system.

Like a clock…

but not built for time.

Built for decisions.

Symbols replaced numbers.

Rotating slowly around us.

1

2

3

9

10

0

They repeated.

Not randomly.

In a pattern that felt intentional.

Meaningful.

Wrong.

Sira began circling me.

Slow.

Measured.

"The first ring isn't a test of strength," she said.

Her voice was softer now.

More precise.

"It's a test of vision."

Her hand moved again.

And the white void…

changed.

It became reflective.

Not like a mirror of space..

but something deeper.

Something that didn't show where you are…

but what you could become.

The Mirror of Possibilities

Images formed within the surface.

Not projections.

Memories that hadn't happened yet.

I saw myself standing in the City of Shadows.

Then..

in the Towers of Eden.

Higher.

Further.

Changing.

Then..

Elias's laboratory.

But not the one I left.

A different version.

Broken in ways I didn't understand.

And then..

it shifted.

The image darkened.

The ground turned black.

Cracked.

Dead.

The sky above it..

fractured.

Not clouds.

Not storms.

Something worse.

Reality itself… splitting.

And somehow..

without explanation..

I knew.

This was the Ninth Layer.

The mirror pulsed again.

Another image formed.

This one..

closer.

Too close.

A version of me stood there.

Watching.

His eyes..

glowing blue.

Cracked.

Light leaking through them like fractures in glass.

Half his face remained human.

The other half…

was no longer stable.

It wasn't damaged.

It was transforming.

Into something that didn't belong to any form I understood.

He smiled.

Slowly.

Knowingly.

Then..

he disappeared.

I stepped back.

Instinctively.

Sira placed her hand on my shoulder.

Her touch was steady.

Grounding.

"Don't fear it," she said gently.

"That's not your future."

A pause.

Longer this time.

"It's one of thousands of possibilities."

I stared at the mirror.

My reflection wasn't there anymore.

Only outcomes.

Only fragments of what could be.

"But only one path," she continued,

"reaches the true ending."

The ring around us tightened.

I felt it this time.

Not physically.

Internally.

Like pressure building inside my chest..

not crushing…

but aligning.

Sira lifted her hand again.

"The first cycle will ask you a question," she said.

"If your answer is wrong…"

Her voice lowered slightly.

"…time in this layer fractures."

Everything stopped.

Instantly.

The ring froze.

The mirror stilled.

Even Sira..

motionless.

At the center of the ring..

a shape formed.

Dark.

Undefined.

Watching.

It raised a finger.

Words appeared.

Not written.

Imposed.

What do you want?

They shifted.

Rearranged.

Why do you travel between layers?

Sira's voice reached me.

Faint.

Distant.

Like something trying to break through frozen time.

"The answer to that question…"

she whispered,

"…is the first step toward the third layer… and toward the greater truth."

The ring moved again.

Closer.

Tighter.

My heartbeat echoed through the void.

Four answers formed before me.

Clear.

Simple.

Final.

1. I am searching for the truth.

2. I want to save the layers.

3. I am running from something.

4. I don't know.

Before I could speak..

another voice reached me.

Distant.

Familiar.

Wrong.

The same whisper.

From the City of Shadows.

"The tenth layer… before the ninth."

Then softer.

Closer.

"Don't answer with the whole truth…"

My body froze.

Not from fear.

Recognition.

As if something ahead of me..

something that had already seen this moment..

was trying to change it.

I spoke.

(The answer remains unspoken.)

The instant the word left me..

the ring detonated outward.

Not an explosion of force..

but of reality itself tearing open.

The void fractured.

The mirror shattered..

not into glass..

into time.

Fragments of moments scattered in every direction.

Sira smiled.

"You survived the first cycle," she said.

"Most who enter here… don't leave."

But the expression didn't last.

Her smile faded.

Quickly.

Too quickly.

Her eyes widened.

She looked behind me.

For the first time..

since I had ever seen her..

Sira looked afraid.

"There's something here," she whispered.

I turned slowly.

At the edge of the ring..

something stood.

A shadow.

Human-shaped.

But wrong.

Not mine.

Not Elias's.

Not from the City.

Not from the towers.

Not from any layer I knew.

It didn't belong to time.

It didn't belong to possibility.

It stood there..

as if it had entered from somewhere that shouldn't exist.

Sira's voice trembled.

"…That shadow wasn't supposed to enter."

The shadow moved.

Not walking.

Advancing.

Like distance itself was collapsing to bring it closer.

Toward me.

Toward the center.

Toward the choice I had already made.

Then..

the light shattered again.
