Chapter 1 - The girl who doesn't lose

Emma Carter didn't lose.

Not in exams.

Not in debates.

Not in anything that could be measured, ranked, or graded.

And definitely not to him.

She adjusted the strap of her bag as she walked into the lecture hall, her expression calm and unreadable—the kind that made people think twice before approaching her.

It wasn't that Emma was unfriendly.

She just didn't believe in wasting time.

Time was for results.

"Emma!" a voice called from behind. She didn't need to turn.

"Lily," Emma said, sliding into her usual seat near the front.

"You're late."

"I'm not late, I'm fashionably delayed," Lily replied, dropping into the chair beside her with a grin.

"Big difference."Emma ignored that, already pulling out her notebook.

Her world was simple: focus, discipline, results.

No distractions.

No complications.

No—"Still planning to beat me this semester?"Emma's pen stopped.

She closed her eyes briefly before turning.

Of course.

Noah Blake. He stood beside her row, relaxed like he had nowhere important to be, one hand in his pocket, the other holding a notebook he probably barely used.

His smile was effortless—like things just worked out for him without trying.

Emma didn't like people like that.Or at least… that's what she told herself."I don't plan," she said coolly.

"I just win."Lily choked back a laugh.Noah's smile widened slightly.

"Confident," he said.

"I like that."Emma held his gaze just long enough to make a point—then turned back to her notes.

"Find another seat," she said.

"Class is starting."Instead, he dropped into the chair behind her.

"I'm fine here."Of course you are.---The lecture began, and the room filled with the quiet rhythm of pens moving and keyboards clicking.

Emma focused immediately.

Every word mattered.

Every concept counted.

She didn't aim to pass—she aimed to be the best.Still…She could feel it.

His presence behind her.

Not loud.

Not distracting.

Just… there. And somehow, that was worse.---

"Group project," the lecturer announced.

Emma's stomach tightened slightly.

She hated group work.

People slowed things down.

Made mistakes.

Expected her to fix everything.

"You'll be working in pairs," the lecturer continued.

"I'll assign them."Emma sat still, already preparing herself to carry someone.

"Emma Carter…"She straightened.

"…and Noah Blake."Silence.Lily turned slowly, eyes wide.

"No way," she whispered.

Emma didn't react—at least not on the outside.Inside?Absolutely not.

"Sir," Emma said calmly.

"Can I change partners?"The lecturer frowned.

"Any reason?"

"Yes."A quiet laugh came from behind her.

"I promise I'm not that bad."Emma turned, her eyes sharp.

"This isn't a joke."Noah raised his hands slightly, but his smile stayed.

"I know."

"The pairs are final," the lecturer said.

"Learn to work together."Emma faced forward again.

"Fine."But it didn't feel fine.---After class, Emma packed her bag quickly.

Plan: she would do everything herself. He would stay out of the way.Simple.

"Emma."She kept walking.

"Okay, now you're just ignoring me.

"She stopped and turned.

"What do you want?"Up close, Noah looked different. Less playful. More… focused.

"To talk about the project."

"Do your part. Send it to me. I'll handle the rest."

"That's not teamwork."

"That's efficiency."He studied her for a second.

"You don't trust me."

"It's not about trust. It's about results."

"You think I can't get them?"Emma hesitated—just for a second.

"You're inconsistent."His smile softened.

"Or maybe you don't actually know me."

"I don't need to."

"Guess you will now."There was something in the way he said it—calm, but certain.Emma didn't like that.

"Library. Tomorrow. 4 PM," she said.

"Don't be late."Then she walked away.---That night, Emma sat at her desk, everything neat and organized.

Her world made sense.

Until it didn't.

She paused, staring at her screen.

Noah Blake.

Why did he get under her skin?It wasn't just his attitude.

It was the way he looked at her.

Like he saw more than just the top student.

Like he wasn't intimidated.

Emma shook her head.

Feelings were distractions.

And distractions weren't allowed.

---The next day, 4:00 PM.

Emma sat in the library.

Alone.4:05.

Still alone.

4:10.Unbelievable

.She was about to leave—"Sorry I'm late."

She looked up.

Noah stood there, slightly out of breath.

"You're ten minutes late," she said.

"I said sorry."

"That doesn't fix it."He sat down anyway.

"I brought you coffee," he said, sliding a cup toward her.

Emma blinked.

"I didn't ask for that."

"I know."She stared at it.

Then at him.

"Why?"He shrugged.

"You look like someone who forgets to take breaks."

"I don't forget."

"You ignore them."Their eyes met.

And something shifted.

Small.

Quiet.

Real.

Emma looked away first.

"Let's start."Noah nodded.

"Okay."But he didn't move immediately.

He just watched her for a moment.

Like she was something worth understanding

And for the first time in a long time --

Emma felt something she didn't like.

Something she couldn't control.

Not fear.

Not pressure

Something worse

Interest.
