Chapter 7 - CHAPTER SEVEN: THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

---

The farewell party wasn't just an event.

It wasn't just music, laughter, and expensive decorations wrapped in a night people would pretend to forget.

It was a statement.

A final stage where reputations were cemented, alliances quietly shifted, and unspoken tensions surfaced beneath carefully controlled smiles.

It was where people became something more—

Or lost something they didn't realize they had.

And tonight…

Everything was about to change.

---

The venue itself reflected that importance.

A private estate owned by one of the city's most influential families stood illuminated under the night sky, its grand structure glowing with golden lights that spilled from tall windows and wrapped balconies. Chandeliers shimmered inside, casting reflections across polished floors, while soft music pulsed in the background—refined, controlled, yet alive.

Luxury cars lined the entrance outside, their sleek designs catching the light as students stepped out, dressed far beyond the simplicity of school uniforms.

Laughter filled the air.

Excitement.

Expectation.

And something quieter—

Anticipation.

Inside, at the top of a sweeping staircase that curved elegantly into the main hall, Lina stood still.

Her fingers curled slightly around the smooth railing, gripping it tighter than necessary.

"I shouldn't be here," she whispered.

Vanessa, standing beside her, didn't hesitate.

"Yes, you should," she replied immediately, her hands already moving to adjust a loose strand of Lina's hair, smoothing it into place with practiced ease. "And you look dangerously beautiful, by the way."

Lina glanced down at herself.

The dress she wore was soft and flowing, the fabric catching the light with every small movement. It wasn't loud or overly extravagant—but it didn't need to be.

It fit her.

Perfectly.

Elegant without effort.

Delicate without being fragile.

It hugged her just enough to make her feel… different.

Unfamiliar.

Like she had stepped into a version of herself she hadn't fully met yet.

"I feel like everyone is staring," Lina murmured.

Vanessa smirked slightly, her confidence unwavering. "That's because they are."

Lina let out a quiet breath. "That's not helping."

"It's not supposed to comfort you," Vanessa replied, stepping back just enough to take in the full picture. "It's supposed to remind you."

"Of what?"

Vanessa's eyes softened, just slightly.

"That you're not second to anyone tonight."

The words lingered.

Heavier than Lina expected.

She exhaled slowly, trying to steady the rising tension in her chest.

But something inside her refused to settle.

Because this night—

It wasn't just about appearances.

It wasn't just about being seen.

It was about him.

And she didn't know what that meant yet.

---

Across the hall—

Adrian had already arrived.

And just as expected—

Everything had shifted.

Not dramatically.

Not in a way people openly acknowledged.

But subtly.

Undeniably.

The moment he stepped into the room, attention followed.

Girls gravitated toward him almost instinctively, their laughter a little brighter, their movements a little more deliberate. Conversations paused briefly as eyes turned in his direction, curiosity and admiration blending effortlessly.

Boys greeted him with nods or quiet acknowledgment, respect threading through their casual interactions.

But Adrian himself remained unchanged.

Detached.

Untouched.

Uninterested.

He stood near the center of the room, one hand loosely in his pocket, the other holding a glass he hadn't taken a single sip from. His posture was relaxed, but his presence commanded the space without effort.

He wasn't engaging.

He wasn't performing.

He was simply there.

And that was enough.

Or at least—

It used to be.

Tonight, something was different.

His gaze didn't linger on the people around him.

Didn't respond to the attention he was used to receiving.

Instead—

It moved.

Searching.

Waiting.

---

A few steps away, Ethan stood with a glass in his hand, his grip tighter than necessary.

From the outside, he looked composed as ever—calm, collected, observant.

But inside—

Something wasn't sitting right.

He watched the familiar scene unfold—the way people approached Adrian, the way they tried to pull him into conversations, the way he responded with just enough acknowledgment to remain polite, but never enough to invite closeness.

It was the same.

Exactly the same.

And yet—

It wasn't.

Because Adrian wasn't really here.

Not fully.

Ethan could see it.

The slight distraction.

The lack of focus.

The subtle shift in attention that kept pulling his gaze elsewhere.

Toward something—

Or someone—

That wasn't in front of him.

"You're unusually quiet tonight."

The voice slipped in beside him, smooth and deliberate.

Clara.

Ethan didn't turn.

"You're unusually observant," he replied.

Clara smiled faintly, her reflection catching in the glass he held.

"Only when something is worth observing."

Ethan took a slow breath, his eyes still fixed on Adrian.

"And what's worth observing tonight?" he asked.

Clara's gaze followed his, her expression sharpening just slightly as she took in the room.

"Change," she said simply.

Ethan didn't respond.

Because he felt it too.

Clara tilted her head slightly, studying Adrian more closely.

"He looks bored," she added.

Ethan let out a quiet breath. "He always looks bored."

"Not like this," Clara corrected softly.

There was something else in her tone now.

Something thoughtful.

Calculating.

"Usually, he's uninterested," she continued. "Tonight… he's waiting."

The word settled heavily.

Ethan's grip on his glass tightened just slightly.

Waiting.

For who?

He already knew.

He just didn't want to say it.

Didn't want to make it real.

Across the room, Adrian shifted slightly, his gaze flickering toward the staircase.

And then—

He stilled.

Completely.

Ethan followed his line of sight instinctively.

And saw her.

At the top of the staircase.

Lina.

For a moment—

The room changed.

Not physically.

Not obviously.

But something in the air shifted.

Because this wasn't casual anymore.

This wasn't curiosity.

This was focus.

Intent.

Adrian's attention locked onto her with a quiet intensity that didn't need to be announced to be understood.

Clara noticed it instantly.

Of course she did.

Her lips curved into a slow, knowing smile.

"Well," she murmured, almost amused, "there she is."

Ethan didn't speak.

Couldn't.

Because watching it—

Seeing it unfold in real time—

Made everything feel heavier.

More real.

More final.

At the top of the stairs, Lina hesitated.

She could feel it.

The shift.

The attention.

The weight of being seen in a way she had never been seen before.

Her fingers tightened slightly against the railing.

Her heartbeat quickened.

And then—

Without fully understanding why—

She looked down.

And met his gaze.

Directly.

The room seemed to blur around the edges.

The music faded.

The voices became distant.

Because in that moment—

There was only him.

And the way he was looking at her.

Not casually.

Not curiously.

But like she had been the reason he came.

Like everything else had just been waiting—

For this.

For her.

Lina's breath caught.

And something inside her shifted.

Irreversibly.

Across the room, Adrian didn't move.

Didn't speak.

But his presence changed.

Focused.

Certain.

Unavoidable.

And from where he stood, Ethan felt it.

That final, undeniable truth settling in his chest.

This wasn't something small.

This wasn't something temporary.

This wasn't something he could ignore.

This—

Was the moment everything changed.

And there was no going back.
