Chapter 4 - The alpha came back

The silence after the fight felt wrong.

Too heavy.

Too… watchful.

I could still feel it—the power that had surged through me moments ago. It hadn't fully faded. It lingered beneath my skin like a sleeping storm, quiet but dangerous.

Waiting.

My fingers trembled slightly as I lowered my hand.

"I didn't mean to do that," I said, my voice barely steady.

Kael didn't respond immediately.

He was still watching me.

Not casually.

Not curiously.

But intently—like he was trying to memorize something… or confirm it.

"You didn't lose control," he said at last.

I frowned. "It didn't feel like control."

"It will," he replied.

Something about the way he said it made my chest tighten.

Like this wasn't just the beginning.

Like it was inevitable.

I swallowed hard. "You said they were hunting me because of the mark… but that wasn't just the mark, was it?"

Kael's gaze held mine.

"No," he said.

My stomach dropped.

"Then what is it?" I pressed.

For a moment, he didn't answer.

Then—

"You're changing."

The words sent a chill down my spine.

"Changing into what?" I whispered.

His eyes flickered briefly to the mark on my wrist.

"Something they fear," he said quietly.

My breath caught.

Before I could ask more—

A sharp, familiar voice cut through the forest.

"Lyra."

Everything inside me went still.

No.

Slowly… I turned.

And there he was.

Damon.

Standing at the edge of the clearing.

Watching us.

His presence felt different now.

Not distant.

Not cold.

But sharp.

Focused.

And underneath it—

Anger.

My chest tightened.

"What are you doing here?" I asked, my voice quieter than I intended.

His gaze flicked briefly to Kael.

Then back to me.

"I came for you," he said.

The words hit harder than they should have.

"For me?" I repeated, disbelief creeping in. "You rejected me."

His jaw tightened.

"And I'm here now."

Something bitter rose in my chest.

"That doesn't fix anything," I said.

Damon took a step forward.

Kael didn't move.

But the air between them shifted instantly.

Tense.

Dangerous.

Territorial.

"You shouldn't be here," Damon said, his voice turning cold as his eyes locked onto Kael. "Not on my land."

Kael's lips curved slightly.

"Your land?" he echoed softly. "You seem confused."

The temperature in the clearing seemed to drop.

Damon's eyes darkened.

"You think you can take what belongs to me?" he asked.

The words made something twist painfully in my chest.

Belongs to me.

Kael's expression didn't change.

But something in his presence did.

Something darker.

More dangerous.

"She stopped belonging to you the moment you rejected her," Kael said.

His voice wasn't loud.

But it carried.

Every word deliberate.

Every word sharp.

Damon's gaze snapped to me.

"Is that what you think?" he demanded. "That this—" he gestured toward Kael "—is better?"

My throat tightened.

"I didn't choose this," I said quietly.

"No," Kael said from beside me.

My breath caught.

He stepped closer.

Not touching me—

But close enough that I could feel him.

The heat.

The pull.

The mark flared in response.

"You didn't," he continued softly. "But you're still here."

My heart stuttered.

Damon noticed.

Of course he did.

His expression hardened.

"What did you do to her?" he demanded, his voice rising. "What is that mark?"

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Kael didn't answer.

But I felt his attention shift.

To me.

Waiting.

Watching.

My fingers curled slightly.

"This…" I lifted my wrist slowly, the mark dark against my skin. "…it just appeared."

"That's not possible," Damon snapped immediately.

"It happened," I said.

His gaze searched my face.

Looking for doubt.

Fear.

Anything.

And he found it.

Because I was afraid.

"I can feel it," I admitted quietly. "It's… different."

Damon's jaw clenched.

"That's because it's wrong," he said. "It's not a mate bond. It's not natural. He's manipulating you."

My wolf stirred uneasily.

Because part of me—

A small, fragile part—

Wondered if he was right.

Kael's voice cut through that thought instantly.

"Careful, Alpha," he said.

Soft.

Controlled.

But dangerous.

"Or what?" Damon challenged.

The air between them snapped.

Like something invisible had been pulled too tight.

Kael took a step forward.

Now they stood facing each other directly.

Power against power.

Dominance against dominance.

And I—

I was caught in the middle.

"If you had wanted her," Kael said quietly, "you should have kept her."

Damon's eyes flashed.

"I don't lose what's mine."

Kael's lips curved slightly.

"Then you shouldn't have thrown her away."

Silence.

Heavy.

Explosive.

My chest tightened painfully.

"Stop," I said, my voice shaking. "Both of you—just stop."

They didn't move.

Didn't look away from each other.

"Lyra," Damon said, softer now, his gaze finally shifting back to me. "Come with me."

My breath caught.

"What?" I whispered.

"Come back," he said. "Whatever this is… we can fix it."

Fix it.

Like I was something broken.

Something disposable.

Something he could reject…

…and then reclaim.

My chest burned.

"You already made your choice," I said quietly.

His expression flickered.

"I made a mistake."

The words hit me harder than the rejection itself.

Because now—

Now he cared.

Now he wanted me back.

"Why?" I asked.

His jaw tightened.

"Because this—" his gaze flicked to the mark again "—is dangerous. And I won't let him take you."

Something in me snapped.

"Take me?" I repeated. "I'm not something to be taken!"

The forest echoed with the force of my voice.

Silence followed.

Then—

The mark burned.

Sharp.

Sudden.

Power surged through me again, stronger than before.

Unstable.

Wild.

Both of them felt it.

I saw it in their expressions.

Damon stepped back slightly.

Kael didn't.

He stepped closer.

"Lyra," he said, his voice lower now. "Breathe."

But it was already building.

Too fast.

Too strong—

"I can't—" I gasped.

The air around us shifted.

The ground trembled slightly beneath my feet.

My wolf roared inside me.

"Control it," Kael said.

"I don't know how!" I cried.

The pressure built—

And then—

Everything exploded outward.

A burst of energy tore through the clearing, knocking leaves from the trees, sending a shockwave through the ground.

Damon staggered back.

Kael didn't move.

Of course he didn't.

Silence fell again.

But this time—

It was different.

Because now…

There was no hiding it.

Damon stared at me.

Not with doubt.

Not with confusion.

But with something else.

Realization.

"You…" he whispered.

My chest tightened.

"What?" I asked, fear creeping in.

His eyes locked onto mine.

"You're not just a wolf."

The words hit like thunder.

I froze.

"What…?" I breathed.

Kael didn't deny it.

Didn't correct him.

Didn't say a word.

And somehow—

That was worse.

My heart began to pound.

"What does that mean?" I asked, my voice shaking.

No one answered.

The silence stretched.

Heavy.

Terrifying.

And then—

Kael spoke.

Quietly.

Decisively.

"She comes with me."

Damon's gaze snapped to him.

"No."

The word was sharp.

Final.

Possessive.

"You don't get to decide that," Damon added.

Kael's eyes darkened.

"I already did."

The air shifted again.

Danger rising.

Clashing.

Explosive.

My breath caught.

And deep down…

I knew.

This wasn't over.

Not even close.
