The next three days passed in a blur of labor and vigilance.
Kai worked alongside the goblins from dawn until dusk, clearing rubble, repairing walls, stockpiling supplies. His body ached. His head throbbed. The threads in his mind pulsed with the constant presence of twelve connected consciousnesses, each one feeding him information, each one demanding attention.
"Cognitive Load: 62/100," Red reported each morning. "Stable. But near threshold. Avoid combat. Avoid emotional stress. Avoid—"
"I know," Kai said. Every day. The same warning. The same answer.
He couldn't avoid combat. He couldn't avoid stress. The beasts came every night now. Not attacking. Testing. They circled the walls, red eyes gleaming in the darkness, watching, waiting for weakness.
Kai met them each time. A flicker of Will Resonance. A warning. A promise. They scattered, but they came back. More of them each night. Bolder. Closer.
"They are learning," Blue said on the third night. Kai stood on the wall, watching the darkness, Tik at his feet, Warden somewhere in the shadows behind him.
"They know you are strong. They want to see how strong. They want to see if you break."
"They want to see if we break," Kai corrected. He could feel the goblins in his mind—Tik's fierce protectiveness, Warden's steady watchfulness, the others' fear and hope and desperate loyalty.
"They won't break."
"Neither will you."
Kai watched the darkness. The red eyes were closer tonight. More of them. The pack had grown. New beasts had joined the old, drawn by the scent of weakness, the promise of prey.
"They're going to attack," he said. "Soon."
"Yes."
"How many?"
"Unknown. But more than before. More than you can hold with Will Resonance alone."
Kai's hands tightened on the wall. His head throbbed. His Load was too high. His Will Resonance was too weak. He needed more time. More strength. More allies.
But time was running out.
"We need to be ready," he said.
"We are ready."
Kai looked at the city behind him. The goblins were in position—Tik at the gate, Warden on the east wall, the others scattered, watching, waiting. Riya stood at the warehouse entrance, her scar pulsing faintly, her eyes fixed on the darkness.
They were ready. But ready wasn't enough. He needed to be stronger. He needed to be faster. He needed—
"Kai."
Blue's voice was soft. Gentle.
"You are enough. Not because you are strong. Because you are here. Because you are fighting. Because they trust you."
Kai closed his eyes. The threads pulsed. Twelve goblins. One friend. One city.
"They trust you not because you will win. They trust you because you will not run."
He opened his eyes. The red eyes were closer now. The pack was gathering.
"Then let's not run," he said.
He raised his hands. The threads pulsed. The Will Resonance built in his chest. And the night held its breath.
