Chapter 6 - what stays after

hen Silence Finds You

Episode 6 — "What Stays After"

Some things don't follow you loudly.

They stay quiet—

until something real makes them impossible to ignore.

That night—

Aarav didn't check his phone again.

Not because he forgot.

Because he knew it was still there.

The message.

The reply.

The part of his past he had finally touched—

but not fully faced.

He lay on his bed.

Eyes open.

Room dark.

But his mind—

clear in a way it hadn't been before.

Not peaceful.

Not restless.

Just… aware.

Her hand.

The way it held back.

The way it didn't leave.

"…I stayed," he whispered.

And for once—

it didn't feel like a question.

Morning came slower.

Not outside.

Inside.

The rooftop—

felt quieter again.

But not empty.

Not like before.

Aarav stood there—

but he wasn't escaping anything today.

He was… carrying it.

Everything.

The past.

The present.

The choice he made.

"…this doesn't stay simple," he said under his breath.

And now—

he understood what that meant.

In class—

he didn't look at the door first.

He didn't need to.

Because he already knew—

he would notice when she arrived.

And he did.

Without turning.

Without checking.

Just… knowing.

Meera sat beside him.

Close.

Familiar.

But today—

she didn't speak immediately.

The silence between them—

was different again.

Not uncertain.

Not distant.

But… heavier.

Like something was about to be said.

"…did they reply?" she asked softly.

Aarav's fingers paused on his notebook.

There it was.

Not sudden.

Not unexpected.

Just… real.

"…yeah," he said.

A small pause.

"…and?" she asked.

He exhaled slowly.

"…they didn't say much."

That was true.

But not complete.

Meera turned slightly toward him.

"…but it affected you."

Not a question.

Aarav looked at her.

For a second—

he thought about avoiding it.

Changing the topic.

Saying something easier.

But he didn't.

"…yeah," he said quietly.

That honesty didn't create distance.

But it changed the air.

"…you don't have to tell me everything," Meera said.

Her voice was calm.

Not pushing.

Not stepping back.

Just… giving space.

Aarav looked down at his hand.

Then—

slowly—

he placed it near hers again.

Not holding.

Not yet.

Just… close.

"…it wasn't simple," he said.

The words came slower now.

"…with them."

Meera didn't interrupt.

"…I thought if I stayed quiet… it would fade," he added.

A small pause.

"…but it didn't."

That sentence stayed between them.

Longer than most.

"…so you left it unfinished," she said softly.

Aarav nodded faintly.

"…yeah."

Silence.

But not uncomfortable.

Not distant.

Just… understanding.

Then—

Meera's fingers moved.

Slow.

Careful.

Until they rested over his.

Not tight.

Not sudden.

Just… there.

"…then don't do that again," she said quietly.

Aarav looked at her.

Not surprised.

Not overwhelmed.

Just… seen.

"…I'm trying not to," he said.

That wasn't a promise.

But it was real.

Lunch—

was quieter today.

Not because of the crowd.

Because of what had been said.

They sat together.

Close.

But not trying to fill every silence.

"…does it still hurt?" Meera asked after a while.

Aarav thought about it.

Not quickly.

Not defensively.

"…not the same way," he said.

Then—

more honestly—

"…but it's still there."

Meera nodded slightly.

"…some things don't leave," she said.

Aarav glanced at her.

"…yeah."

A pause.

"…but they don't stay the same either."

That was new.

For him.

After school—

they walked slower today.

Not because they wanted to reach later.

But because neither of them was rushing anymore.

The silence wasn't heavy now.

It was… full.

"…why didn't you answer them before?" Meera asked.

Aarav's steps slowed slightly.

"…because I didn't know what to say," he admitted.

A pause.

"…and I thought saying nothing would hurt less."

Meera looked ahead.

"…did it?"

He shook his head faintly.

"…no."

That truth didn't need anything else.

At the bus stop—

they stood closer again.

Naturally.

No effort.

The sky looked the same.

But it didn't feel like repetition anymore.

It felt like… continuation.

"…you're different," Meera said quietly.

Aarav glanced at her.

"…how?"

She took a second.

Not rushing the answer.

"…you don't leave things halfway anymore."

That landed.

Not loudly.

But deeply.

Aarav looked at their hands.

Still close.

Still real.

"…I don't want to," he said.

That was it.

The bus approached.

Closer.

Louder.

But this time—

the moment didn't feel like it was ending.

It felt like something had already stayed.

Meera stepped onto the bus.

Then paused—

just for a second.

"…Aarav," she said softly.

He looked up.

"…don't carry everything alone."

The doors began to close.

And just before they did—

he said,

"…I won't."

Not perfectly.

Not completely.

But enough.

The bus left.

The noise faded.

Aarav stood there.

Not empty.

Not unsure.

Just… changed.

Some moments don't fix you.

They don't erase what came before.

They just…

make you strong enough to finally face it—

without running.
