Chapter 18 - What is happening

The throne room had emptied completely, yet the silence that remained no longer felt neutral or merely the absence of sound. It carried a subtle pressure now, as if something unseen had settled into the space and was observing rather than simply existing.

Ethan remained seated, posture composed and unchanged as if the previous decisions still required no further consideration or review. Internally, however, his thoughts had not moved forward, instead circling back toward the memory that had surfaced earlier with unnatural clarity.

"…That should not have felt that real," he thought carefully, maintaining external stillness as he replayed the details within his mind. "…and I am starting to think the problem is not that I forgot something, but that I am remembering things that never happened."

He raised his hand slightly, not to command anything external, but as a small and controlled attempt to focus his thoughts inward. The motion was subtle, yet the familiar pressure of the Odinforce responded faintly, stabilizing the space around him as if encouraging clarity.

"…Alright, test it properly," he decided, shifting from passive concern into deliberate analysis despite the underlying discomfort. "…if that memory was real, then it should align with something I can verify immediately without guessing."

The memory surfaced again without resistance, presenting the same sequence of events with complete structure and internal consistency. It showed him issuing a directive regarding internal resource allocation within Asgard itself, something that should have already been recorded or reflected in current arrangements.

Ethan did not move immediately, though his thoughts sharpened as the opportunity to verify the information became clear. "…Perfect," he thought dryly, maintaining composure despite the situation, "…nothing says stability like testing whether my own brain is lying to me in real time."

"Summon the quartermaster responsible for internal distribution," he said calmly, voice steady as the command carried outward without hesitation or visible uncertainty. "I require confirmation regarding the allocation changes implemented under previous directive."

The response was immediate, the order carried out without question as the system of the palace moved efficiently to comply. The structure of Asgard did not resist his command, which somehow made the situation more concerning rather than less.

Ethan remained still, allowing the silence to stretch as he waited, maintaining the image of someone confirming a known outcome rather than investigating a potential problem. Internally, however, his thoughts had already begun preparing for both possibilities.

"…If this matches, then I have information I should not have," he thought carefully, tracking the implications with increasing focus. "…and if it does not match, then I just gave an order based on something completely false, which is significantly worse."

The quartermaster arrived quickly, bowing with precise control before awaiting further instruction without hesitation. There was no uncertainty in his posture, only readiness to confirm what he clearly assumed had already been decided.

"Report on the current internal distribution structure," Ethan said evenly, keeping the request broad enough to avoid revealing specifics while still testing the memory directly. "Focus on any recent changes that were implemented under my authority."

The quartermaster responded immediately, detailing the current system with clear and structured explanation that did not deviate or hesitate at any point. As he spoke, the alignment between reality and memory became increasingly clear in a way Ethan had not expected.

It did not match.

"…No," Ethan thought slowly, the realization forming with quiet certainty as the differences became impossible to ignore. "…that is not even close to what I remember, which means that memory is completely fabricated and somehow still feels real."

The quartermaster finished his report without deviation, awaiting further instruction as if the matter had been routine and unremarkable. There was no indication that anything had been altered or overlooked, only confirmation of a system that had never matched the memory in Ethan's mind.

Ethan remained still, posture unchanged as he processed the result without allowing it to show externally. Internally, however, the implications had already begun expanding in ways that were far more serious than simple confusion.

"…So that memory never happened," he concluded carefully, maintaining control as the realization settled into place. "…which means I cannot trust what I remember, and that is a problem because I am making decisions based on it."

"You may proceed with current arrangements," he said calmly, dismissing the quartermaster without altering the structure that already existed. The instruction carried no hesitation, preserving the image of controlled authority despite the internal shift.

The quartermaster bowed and left without question, the chamber returning to silence once again as the system of Asgard continued operating without disruption. Nothing outward had changed, yet everything within Ethan's understanding had shifted significantly.

Ethan remained seated, though this time his thoughts did not settle into control or structure as they had before. Instead, something colder began forming beneath the surface, replacing uncertainty with something far more deliberate.

"…This is not random," he thought slowly, analyzing the pattern with increasing precision. "…these memories are structured, consistent, and placed exactly where they are most useful, which means something is putting them there."

The realization did not bring panic, but something far more focused and dangerous as his perspective shifted. The problem was no longer confusion, but interference.

"…Something is editing my understanding of reality," he concluded quietly, the weight of that thought settling into something far more serious than before. "…and I have no idea what its objective is, which makes this significantly worse."

The air shifted faintly within the chamber, subtle enough to be dismissed if not for everything that had already happened. Ethan did not move, but his awareness sharpened immediately as the sensation registered.

"…Yeah," he thought, gaze fixed ahead as the silence deepened once more. "…this is definitely not just in my head anymore."
