Chapter 1 - forgive us

Chapter 3: The Sky of Fire and Iron

The world didn't just break; it vanished into a roar of orange and black.

The first explosion hit the front of the bakery like a physical hammer. I watched the heavy oak door—the one my father locked every night with a smile—turn into a million wooden shards. My childhood, my flour-covered apron, the smell of fresh bread... all of it was destroyed in a heartbeat.

"Julian! Down!" my mother screamed, her voice drowned out by the second blast.

The Collapse

The ceiling groaned. Plaster rained down like gray snow. I looked at Hans, the German boy I had been hiding. The shock was too much for him. His eyes rolled back and he slumped against the grain sacks. He was sleeping immediately—a deep, terrifying coma brought on by the blast.

"Hans! Wake up!" I lunged for him, grabbing his uniform. He was dead weight. I was just a boy trying to move a mountain while the world above me turned to ash.

The Heroes Arrive

Then, through the ringing in my ears, a new sound emerged. It wasn't the sharp clack-clack of Nazi boots. It was the heavy, earth-shaking rumble of massive engines and the high-pitched whistle of shells.

"The Allies!" My heart did a somersault. "Our heroes are here!"

I could hear shouting in English and French. The invasion had begun! For a split second, I forgot the fire. I felt a surge of pure happiness. I was going to be saved. I was going to be free!

The Nightmare Twist

But the darkness wasn't finished. The cellar door was kicked inward with a crash. Two SS soldiers, their faces masked in soot, burst in. They didn't see a boy; they saw a way out.

"You're coming with us," the commander hissed. He grabbed me by the throat. They dragged Hans up by his boots, his head hitting the floor with a dull thud. They kidnapped us, pulling us right into the middle of the war.

The Death Trap

We were hauled into the street. The village was a skeleton of fire. I saw the Allied soldiers moving like shadows through the smoke. They were so close!

"Help!" I tried to scream, but a cold pistol was pressed against my jaw. The Nazis used us as human shields, backing into the square. The Allies stopped, their rifles lowered in horror. They couldn't shoot.

The Nazi commander laughed. "If we go down, the boy goes first!" He began to squeeze the trigger, aiming to kill the Allies immediately. My breath hitched. My heroes were going to die because of me.

The Final Twist

VREEEEE—SHRRRRKT!

A wall to my left exploded as a massive, green Churchill Tank smashed through the brickwork. Its spotlight swung around, blinding everyone. The Nazis froze. The Allies dove for cover.

I looked up at the giant iron beast, expecting a rescue. But as the tank's massive cannon lowered until it was pointing directly at my chest, I realized the smoke was too thick. They couldn't see my face.

To the tank, we were all just shadows in enemy uniforms. The turret hissed. The finger was on the trigger.
