Chapter 16 - Ch 16: Heir of the Abyss

Back in the professors' observation lounge, Seraphina Hale suddenly rose from her chair. The others glanced at her in confusion.

She smirked.

"She's here."

Before anyone could ask what she meant, a clean tear in space ripped open in the middle of the room — a perfect void portal.

Evelyn Vanderbilt stepped through.

She moved with cold, absolute authority. The black dress she wore clung to her dangerous curves, chestnut hair framing her sharp, beautiful face. The air itself seemed to bow in her presence.

Plump Professor Harlan thought to himself in shock — How did she bypass all the defense mechanisms and walk straight in here? A cold shiver ran down the spines of everyone present.

Every professor immediately stood and greeted her with deep respect.

There was a reason everyone feared Evelyn Vanderbilt.

Just because you shared the same rank didn't mean you were equals.

It was said that even when she was the same rank as others, no one could truly beat her. Some even claimed that she can defeat opponents of higher ranks. She was a monster in her own right — the Void Sovereign who ruled not just through power, but through sheer, overwhelming presence.

Evelyn's dark eyes swept across the room once before settling on the live feed showing her son standing before the golden figure on the Abyss Mirror.

She said nothing.

But the temperature in the lounge dropped several degrees.

Head master Elias Voss glanced toward his right with a small, knowing smile.

She's already here… What a protective mother.

He clapped his hands once, the sound sharp and authoritative.

"Let us continue."

The next few students who stepped forward were the unluckiest of the batch. Even when one awakened an Epic-grade class, the applause was polite but hollow. Everyone's minds were still reeling from Alex Vanderbilt's Mythic awakening. The golden figure with six wings still burned in their memories. No one could focus properly.

Then the staff called a name that made half the dome doubt their own ears.

"Lucas Vanderbilt."

A stunned silence fell, followed by confused murmurs.

"What the hell…? When did we have another Vanderbilt of our age?"

"Is this some kind of joke?"

"Another one?!"

Many students glanced at each other in disbelief. The professors in the observation lounge were equally shocked, but none dared show it openly with Evelyn Vanderbilt standing among them like a living storm.

Seraphina Voss raised her elegant brows in clear amusement and turned to her old friend.

"Don't tell me it is what I think it is…"

Evelyn replied flatly, without emotion, "It is."

Seraphina clicked her tongue. "And you still let him breathe…"

Vivienne Laurent, standing beside Lucas, suddenly realized who he truly was. Her warm amber-brown eyes went wide as she turned to him.

"You…"

Lucas gave her a small, dangerous smile and winked — the same cheeky wink she had given him earlier.

He then moved forward under the weight of hundreds of shocked stares.

Ethan Cole pointed a trembling finger at Lucas, mouth open in disbelief. "Who the hell is he…?"

Chloe looked at Alex, her suspicions from earlier now fully confirmed. Alex sighed heavily and answered in a low voice, "My father's son."

The entire hall stood frozen in shock as Lucas Vanderbilt walked toward the Abyss Mirror.

He bowed respectfully to the Headmaster first, then stopped in front of the tall, liquid-black artifact.

On the surface, he radiated calm confidence, but inside his heart was pounding. He didn't care about the grade right now. He just wanted to awaken — any class would do. Just one chance.

Everyone held their breath.

Rumble

The stage beneath their feet began to shake.

The front-row students whispered nervously, "Do you guys feel that too…?"

"Dude… look at the mirror. It's shaking…"

Gasps spread like wildfire.

The Abyss Mirror started vibrating violently right in front of Lucas. He frowned, not understanding what was happening.

A single light flickered and went out.

The entire dome suddenly plunged into cold, oppressive darkness.

The mirror turned completely liquid black, swirling like an endless void. In its center, an emerald-green skull with a single burning eye in the middle of its forehead materialized.

A manic, bone-chilling laugh echoed throughout the academy — loud enough to make the walls tremble.

Students shuddered and huddled closer together in fear.

Even Professor Elias Voss narrowed his eyes, his aura flaring slightly in response.

The laugh stopped abruptly.

The emerald skull turned its single eye directly toward Lucas and spoke in a deep, otherworldly voice that vibrated through every soul present.

"Finally… My heir."

The lights suddenly returned.

The skull vanished.

The mirror stabilized, and glowing blood-red and emerald text appeared across its surface:

Class: Heir of the Infernal Dominion (The Abyssal Sovereign)

Grade: Mythic

The dome remained in pin-drop silence for several long seconds.

Then absolute chaos erupted.

"ANOTHER MYTHIC?!"

"Two Mythic classes in one batch?! That's impossible!"

"What the hell is 'Abyssal Sovereign'? It sounds even more badass than Golden Heir!"

"He's a Vanderbilt, too? This batch is cursed… or blessed…"

"Two gods were born today…"

Alex's face drained of color. His fists clenched so hard his nails dug into his palms.

Ethan stood frozen, mouth hanging open.

Chloe's hand flew to her mouth, eyes wide with shock.

Vivienne trembled, her sexy figure shaking as she stared at him in pure awe and fear.

In the professors' lounge, everyone was standing again. Even Seraphina looked genuinely surprised this time.

Professor Sylas Morcant muttered under his breath, "Two Mythics… and both are Vanderbilts…"

Evelyn Vanderbilt remained completely still, but her dark eyes burned with cold intensity as she watched the mirror display her husband's illegitimate son's class.

The Headmaster floated slightly higher, his voice carrying a rare note of gravity.

"Two Mythic classes in a single awakening ceremony… This batch will be remembered for centuries."

Lucas stood before the mirror, staring at the emerald skull that had called him "heir." A slow, dark smile spread across his face.

He had wanted to awaken, but he had received something far greater.

The awakening ceremony concluded in a heavy, electric silence.

The Abyss Mirror slowly dimmed, its surface returning to calm liquid black as if nothing extraordinary had happened. But everyone present knew the truth — this batch had just produced two Mythic-class awakeners in a single day. Two forbidden grades that hadn't appeared in decades.

Professor Elias Voss floated back to his original position, voice calm but carrying undeniable weight.

"All students who have completed their awakening are to report to the university in three days for class assignment, dormitory allocation, and initial orientation. Until then, rest. Prepare yourselves. The road ahead will not be gentle."

The students began to file out of the colossal dome in waves. Their steps were hurried, voices buzzing with awe and barely contained excitement.

"This batch… It's going to change the order of the world."

"Two Mythics… Golden Heir and Abyssal Sovereign. The guilds are going to go insane."

"The entire awakened society will be watching us now."

Whispers followed them like shadows as they spilled into the campus grounds and toward the waiting luxury cars and escorts.

Alex Vanderbilt was quickly escorted out by his mother. Evelyn appeared at his side like a void rift opening — cold, authoritative, and utterly untouchable. She placed a protective hand on his shoulder, her presence alone parting the crowd. Alex walked beside her, still dazed by his own Mythic result, the golden wings of the Heir still burning behind his eyes.

Lucas Vanderbilt watched them leave for a moment before turning to Vivienne Laurent.

He offered her a small, genuine smile.

"Goodbye for now, Vivienne."

Vivienne stood frozen as Lucas walked away toward the exit. The sleek obsidian form of the Crimson Phantom waited for him outside, its blood-red accents gleaming under the campus lights. The butterfly-wing doors lifted smoothly as he approached.

She remained standing there, eyes fixed on the taillights as the legendary car purred to life and glided away into the Seoul night.

A soft, disbelieving smile curved her lips.

"Did I just make friends with a Mythic-class awakener…?"

She touched her cheek, still feeling the warmth from his earlier wink and words.

The night air felt heavier than before.

This awakening season had only just begun, yet the balance of power among the new generation had already been violently upended. Two Mythic heirs — one bathed in divine golden light, the other crowned by an abyssal emerald skull — now walked the same halls.

The world would soon turn its eyes toward them.

And when it did, nothing would ever be the same again.
