One day, Mei Wanying found a handkerchief among Pei Yan's old belongings.
One corner of the handkerchief was burnt, and it was carefully stored in a small wooden box.
Perhaps because it was old, or perhaps because it had been washed too many times, the handkerchief had faded.
Recognizing it as one she had made, Mei Wanying moved to throw it away, but Pei Yan snatched it from her.
The man clutched it like a treasure. "You gave this to me. You can't throw it away."
Mei Wanying said, "I'll give you a new one."
Pei Yan replied, "This one is different."
Mei Wanying asked, "How is it different?"
Pei Yan grew bashful and embarrassed, unable to look Mei Wanying in the eye.
He stammered, "Anything you give me... is just different."
He looked far too guilty. Mei Wanying's gaze turned dangerous. "Confess now and I'll be lenient!"
Pei Yan squeezed his eyes shut, adopting an expression as if he were facing his doom. "I am a lecher, my lady. Punish me."
'Punish him?'
