Chapter 1 - The day life gave me a second chance

Chapter 1

The rain fell in sheets, heavy and cold, hammering against the villa windows as if the world itself were punishing me. I lay on the marble floor, my white dress soaked, my hands trembling, my chest aching. Each breath burned, each heartbeat felt like it might be my last. I tried to move, to cry out, to call for help—but my body betrayed me. Pain consumed every part of me, sharp and unrelenting.

And then I saw her.

Su Mei. My best friend. The one I had trusted above everyone, the one I had laughed with, cried with, and confided in. She stood there perfectly composed, holding her umbrella with effortless elegance, her lips curved into a faint smile that made my chest ache. Her eyes… they were empty, sharp, cruel. There was no compassion. No hesitation. Only satisfaction.

"You…" My voice barely escaped my lips, hoarse, broken, desperate.

"You finally understand?" she said softly, almost mockingly, tilting her head. Her calmness enraged me more than any words could.

"Why…?" I whispered, struggling to push the pain aside, to comprehend what was happening.

"Because you were always in my way," she said. "Your husband, your son… your life. It should have been mine."

I couldn't process it. I blinked rapidly, trying to grasp her meaning. My son… poisoned? My life… stolen?

"You poisoned… my son?" I gasped, disbelief and horror battling in my chest.

She smiled, gentle and horrifying at the same time. "Yes. And then I framed you. You believed me when I told you your husband would hate you forever. You listened. You left everything behind. I took your place."

The words tore through me, sharper than any blade. My husband… he had never hated me? My son… he had always loved me? And I… I had been blind, foolish, trusting the wrong person with my life.

I remembered it all—the way my husband's gaze had turned cold, how he avoided me without explanation, how my son had collapsed after drinking the soup I had lovingly prepared. I had believed I had failed them, that I was weak. But the truth was far worse. The betrayal had been deliberate, meticulously planned. Su Mei had destroyed everything I loved.

Tears ran down my cheeks, hot and furious. Anger, sorrow, regret—all collided in a storm inside me. "If only…" I whispered. "If only I had another chance…"

Darkness claimed me then, and I felt myself slipping away, the pain fading into nothing.

I closed my eyes.

When I opened them again, everything was different. The rain was gone. The cold, the agony, the blood—all gone. I lay in my own bed, warm and safe, sunlight spilling through the curtains, painting soft golden streaks across the room. My hands—smooth, alive, uninjured. My body—healthy, strong, complete.

I bolted upright, heart hammering. My reflection in the mirror confirmed it. Younger. Alive. Perfect.

And then my gaze fell on the calendar.

June 12.

The day before my son would have been poisoned.

The memories of the life I had lost surged like a tidal wave. Every lie, every betrayal, every foolish mistake I had made—they all returned to me with vivid clarity. The pain I had felt, the regret I had swallowed, the life that had been stolen—I would not repeat it.

I felt a fierce determination rise inside me, chilling and sharp. My fists clenched. Teeth ground together. This time… nothing would be the same.

I would protect my son. I would reclaim my husband. I would see the truth clearly. And Su Mei… she would pay for every cruel, calculated action she had taken.

I sat on the edge of my bed, taking in every detail of my surroundings—the softness of the sheets, the scent of lavender lingering in the air, the warmth of sunlight on my skin. Everything was familiar, yet everything felt like a second chance. I breathed deeply, letting the realization sink in: I had been given time. A second chance to rewrite the past, to correct the mistakes that had cost me everything.

My thoughts immediately turned to Su Mei. That smile, the casual cruelty, the betrayal so complete it had left me lifeless on the floor… I would not underestimate her again. Every move, every word, every interaction would be calculated. I would be patient. I would wait for her to slip, and then I would strike.

My heart ached for my son. He had always loved me, and I had been too blind to see it. This time, I would be there. I would hold him. I would protect him. And I would ensure that no one, not even the friend I had trusted most, could harm him again.

A knock sounded at the door.

"Madam," a servant's voice said softly. "Miss Su Mei is here to see you."

I felt a shiver run down my spine—but it was not fear. It was anticipation, controlled, dangerous. I stood and smoothed my hair, my reflection staring back at me: poised, calm, unyielding.

"Let her in," I said.

This time, I was not the victim.

This time… I was the hunter.

I would protect what was mine. I would uncover the truth. I would reclaim the love I had lost. And I would make sure Su Mei—and anyone who dared hurt my family —regretted ever crossing me.

The storm outside could rage all it wanted. I was reborn. And nothing would stop me from taking back my life.
