Chapter 64 - 64: Decisions and Terms

Time passed differently in the medical wing.

Not slower, not faster, but more deliberate, as if every moment carried weight simply because it was being measured against the fact that none of them were supposed to exist anymore.

Alexander did not gather them together.

Not yet.

That would come later.

For now, each conversation remained individual, contained, controlled, because clarity came easier without the distortion of shared panic, shared justification, or shared denial.

======

Walter White was the first to be approached again.

He stood near the observation window when Alexander entered, his posture composed, though the tension beneath it had not disappeared. His eyes reflected calculation, not fear, and that alone placed him apart from most of the others.

"You have had time to process," Alexander said calmly.

Walter did not turn immediately.

"Yes," he replied after a moment. "Enough to understand that this is real. Not enough to understand how."

"That is sufficient," Alexander said.

Walter turned then, meeting his gaze.

"You said there would be a choice," he continued. "I assume this is where you define the terms."

Alexander inclined his head slightly.

"If you remain," he said, "you will operate within the law of my domain. No illegal production. No manipulation. No criminal networks. Your knowledge will be used for legal and controlled purposes only."

Walter's expression did not change, but something behind it shifted.

"And if I refuse?" he asked.

"You will be relocated," Alexander replied. "A different Earth. No memory of this place. No continuation of what you were."

Walter studied him carefully.

"You're offering me a reset," he said.

"I am offering you a direction," Alexander corrected.

Silence followed.

Then Walter exhaled slowly.

"My cancer is gone," he said.

"Yes."

"And you want me to use my knowledge to build instead of destroy."

"Yes."

Walter looked back toward the glass, his reflection staring at him.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

When he finally spoke, his voice was quieter.

"…I accept."

Not easily.

Not completely.

But decisively.

=======

Gustavo Fring required no repetition.

When Alexander entered, Gus was already seated, composed as ever, though his eyes tracked every detail of the room with quiet precision.

"I assume this is where you formalize expectations," Gus said.

"Yes," Alexander replied.

"The rules are simple," he continued. "No criminal operations. No covert structures. No manipulation of systems outside your assigned role."

Gus folded his hands.

"And in return?" he asked.

"You are allowed to operate," Alexander said. "Within structure. Within law."

Gus considered that.

"A controlled environment," he said.

"Yes."

Gus nodded once.

"I accept," he said.

There was no visible struggle.

But there was adaptation.

And that, Alexander noted, was enough.

======

Mike Ehrmantraut did not sit.

He stood when Alexander entered, arms crossed, expression unreadable but grounded in a realism that did not require explanation.

"Let me guess," Mike said. "No more of the old business."

"Yes."

Mike nodded once.

"Figured," he said.

Alexander did not elaborate.

"You will be placed where your skills are useful," he continued. "Security. Oversight. Protection."

Mike let out a quiet breath.

"Legal work," he said.

"Yes."

Mike looked down briefly, then back up.

"…That's better," he said.

There was no hesitation.

"I'm in," he added.

======

Nacho Varga sat forward when Alexander entered, tension still present in his posture, but different now, less like a man cornered and more like a man who had already survived something worse than fear.

"You're going to tell me I can't go back," Nacho said.

"Yes."

Nacho nodded slowly.

"Figured," he muttered.

Alexander remained silent.

"And the alternative is what?" Nacho asked.

"You live," Alexander said. "Without being hunted. Without being owned."

Nacho's jaw tightened.

That hit.

"Yeah," he said after a moment. "That sounds better."

He leaned back slightly.

"I accept," he added.

The words came easier than expected.

======

Hank Schrader struggled more.

Not outwardly.

But internally.

"You're telling me everyone I knew is gone," he said, pacing once across the room.

"Yes."

"And I can't go back."

"No."

Hank stopped, rubbing the back of his neck.

"Hell of a deal," he muttered.

Alexander waited.

Hank exhaled sharply.

"…But I'm not dead anymore," he said.

"No."

"And I get to keep doing something that matters."

"Yes."

Hank looked up.

"…Then I'm not throwing that away," he said.

He nodded once.

"I accept."

======

Steven Gomez followed easier.

"If Hank's in, I'm in," he said simply.

Alexander did not correct him.

"Your role will be defined independently," he said.

Gomez shrugged lightly.

"Still in," he replied.

======

Jane Margolis took longer.

She sat in silence for several seconds after Alexander finished speaking, her gaze lowered, her hands resting still in her lap.

"So I just… start over," she said quietly.

"Yes."

"And everything before… doesn't follow me."

"No," Alexander said.

Jane swallowed.

"That sounds good," she said.

Then paused.

"…It also sounds scary."

Alexander did not deny that.

"It is," he said.

She nodded.

Then, slowly:

"…I accept."

======

Andrea Cantillo's answer came with quiet strength.

"If I stay," she said, "I don't go back to that life."

"No."

She closed her eyes briefly.

"Then I stay," she said.

There was no hesitation after that.

======

Gale Boetticher accepted almost immediately.

"A chance to learn in a system like this?" he said, almost to himself.

Alexander remained silent.

"Yes," Gale said, smiling faintly. "I accept."

======

Howard Hamlin struggled with the idea of losing everything familiar.

"You're asking me to accept a reality where my entire life is… irrelevant," he said.

"No," Alexander replied. "I am offering you one where it is not the only thing that defines you."

Howard let out a slow breath.

"…That's going to take time," he admitted.

"Yes."

He nodded.

"…I accept."

======

Werner Ziegler smiled faintly.

"A second chance to build," he said.

Alexander inclined his head.

"Yes," Werner said. "I accept."

======

Lydia Rodarte-Quayle hesitated longer than most.

"This is not control," she said. "This is dependency."

"No," Alexander replied. "This is structure."

She looked at him sharply.

"…And if I adapt?" she asked.

"You remain."

Silence.

Then, slowly:

"…I accept."

Reluctantly.

But consciously.

======

Tyrus Kitt gave no speech.

"I understand the conditions," he said.

Alexander nodded.

"I accept."

======

Duane Chow followed quickly.

"Yes," he said. "I accept."

His tone carried calculation.

But also relief.

======

Fred Whalen hesitated only briefly.

"I don't even understand half of this," he admitted.

"You do not need to," Alexander said.

Fred nodded.

"Then yeah," he said. "I accept."

======

Drew Sharp was last.

He looked at Alexander quietly.

"Do I get to stay?" he asked.

"Yes," Alexander said.

Drew nodded.

"Okay," he said. "I accept."

======

And just like that, all of them had made their decision.

Not all of them comfortably.

Not all of them without doubt.

But all of them consciously.

======

Later, when they would finally be brought together, they would begin to understand the scale of what had happened to them.

But for now, each of them remained where they were placed.

Alive.

Given a second chance.

And bound by a single condition that none of them would be allowed to ignore.

Their future would not repeat their past.
