The confession in the car changed everything and nothing at the same time. Lucas still made my coffee every morning. His ears still turned pink when I thanked him. He still stood in corners and watched me with those dark, careful eyes. But now there was something else underneath. A warmth that had not been there before. A permission we had given each other to feel what we were feeling out loud.
Sophie, of course, was insufferable about it.
"I told you," she said for the seventeenth time since the Rio incident. "I told you he was completely gone for you. Kevin's spreadsheet said seventy-eight percent probability, and Kevin's spreadsheets are never wrong."
"They are occasionally wrong," Kevin corrected without looking up from his laptop. "But rarely about matters of human behavior. The data was compelling."
