Chapter 56 - The Almost-Confession

The confession has already happened.

In the study with the ficus. In the car after the Rio incident. In Marlene's Corner with Sophie crying and Kevin documenting and Marlene serving cake. Lucas and I have said the words out loud multiple times now. I love you. I love you too. We've said them in private and in public, in whispers and in front of witnesses.

But there was one moment that almost happened before all of that. One moment that I keep coming back to in my mind. The night I almost told him everything.

I find Lucas in his study late that evening. The city lights glow behind him through the window, turning everything silver and gold. He's sitting beside the ficus with his tie loosened and his sleeves rolled up. His hand is resting on one of the leaves. He's not talking to it tonight—just sitting in comfortable silence.
