Chapter 16 - Getting to know them pt1.

It was mid-afternoon, and Charlie was currently sitting upon a chair inside her hotel. Sitting across from her were the guards that were assigned to her: Millie was currently sipping on a cup of chai latte, and Vaggie was drinking a simple americano.

Charlie, of course, was drinking a can of Monster energy drink as they all sat together. Charlie was rather curious about who these guards were; sure, they introduced themselves to her, and she got the basic gist of what they were here for, but she wanted to know who they were.

Because to Charlie, a stranger is simply a friend you haven't met yet.

Setting her can down on the table, she spoke and asked one of them a question.

"Soooo... Millie, right? Could I ask how you became a knight?" Charlie asked, trying to make small talk.

This caused Millie to pause a bit, as she didn't really expect a royal to care about her, much less her own personal life. But knowing how the princess acts—and just how much nicer she is compared to the other nobility—she had no reason not to answer her.

Setting her teacup down, Millie turned to the princess of Hell and spoke.

"Well, Princess, I ain't too sure myself," she told Charlie.

"What do you mean?" Charlie asked, a bit confused.

"Well, to be more accurate, your Highness, I never really wanted to be a knight growing up. Just sort of ended up as one..." she said, looking down at her teacup, almost sad.

Charlie quickly noticed this and, using her magic, summoned a blanket around Millie, causing her to be a bit shocked at the sudden gesture of kindness from the princess.

"So if you didn't want to be a knight in the first place... what did you want?" Charlie asked, with a warm smile on her face.

Seeing the kind gesture, Millie simply smiled at the princess, sat up straight, and replied.

"Before I became a knight, I wanted to become an assassin—you know, killing demons and whatnot," Millie explained to the princess.

Charlie simply nodded at her explanation, not too bothered by her chosen profession.

"I also had... a friend. We, uh... didn't leave on good terms," Millie said.

"Why's that? If it isn't too much, you know," Charlie said, feeling a bit pushy that she even asked.

"It's fine, Princess. My friend... Cass, we grew up together... but as we grew older and we started looking for work as assassins, we sorta... grew apart. We were fine at first, but as time went on, Cass and I..." Millie drifted off, not knowing what to say as the memories flooded in.

"You don't have to continue if you don't feel comfortable," Charlie said, reassuring Millie.

"Thanks, Princess. But enough of my sad backstory. After I left Cass and that douchebag Chaz—" Millie was then interrupted when Charlie asked a question.

"Who's Chaz?" Charlie asked, not really knowing who this demon was.

"Well, Princess, he is a good-for-nothing, backstabbing, limp-dick piece of SHI—" But before she could finish her sentence, Charlie calmed the feral imp down.

"Okay... calm down there... I get it. I used to have a terrible ex as well. Now I'm dating the hottest demon you can possibly dream of!" Charlie said, boasting a bit about Shakra and her massive thighs.

"Heh, well, to get back on track: when I left Cass and started to work alone in the assassin business, one of my targets was some rich demon imp. I couldn't really remember their name, but when I was about to kill them and slit their throat, some large-ass demon insect wearing all-white armor punched me in the face, knocking me out cold," she explained, holding her cheek that got punched.

Charlie, getting into the story, summoned a blanket of her own and a small straw for her drink as she continued to listen to Millie's story.

"After that, I was sort of knocked out for a while before finally waking up inside of some hospital. I looked around to see where I was at the time, and when I looked out of one of the windows, I saw this beautiful pale city that shined like the night sky. And as I looked out in awe at the city, the doors of my room suddenly opened, revealing the same knight who punched me and Grandmama Lin," Millie said, laughing at the memory.

"You have a grandmother? I never really had one growing up. Maybe a grandpapa? I'm pretty sure God's my dad's dad." You're me damn right, Charlie.

"After Grandmama gave me a good smacking on the ole noggin, she told me the imp I was going after was a rather important witness in something. They never really explained why he was important, just that he had some valuable information."

"And when I told them I understood and asked them if I could leave, the knight spoke up and asked me a simple question... why was I going after the imp?"

"I told him the truth and said it was as simple as an assassination mission, but that wasn't enough for him, and he changed the question to a different one: 'Do you enjoy fighting?' This caught me off guard a bit, and I couldn't really speak for a moment. But taking a deep breath, I told him I love fighting—the adrenaline I feel whenever I fight and kill... I never felt more alive."

"Wow... so what happened next?" Charlie asked.

"Well, after I explained how it is, the knight simply laughed before whispering something in Granny's ear before leaving. And when he did leave, Granny had a stern look on her face before bonking my head and grumbling something as she told me to get up and follow her home."

"After getting home and Grandmama explaining things a bit, she told me I was just recruited to become a knight for House Morningstar. I could hardly believe it... I was going to be a knight for one of the most powerful families in Hell," Millie said, smiling at the memory.

"So... did you like your time with the knights?" Charlie asked curiously.

Millie simply smiled before grabbing her axe with a wide grin and slamming its butt into the ground.

"Best years of my life!"
