Chapter 52 - Chapter 49: The Search Begins

Everything would change.

The thought lingered in Noah's mind long after Echo's presence disappeared.

The study hall felt strangely empty now.

Not safe.

Not peaceful.

Empty.

As if something important had left the room.

Kai seemed to feel it too.

She remained standing, staring at the dark windows.

Kunle sat down heavily for the first time that night.

Neither looked relieved.

That worried Noah.

Because if Echo wasn't actively threatening them, shouldn't they feel better?

Instead, they looked more concerned than ever.

Finally Noah broke the silence.

"So what now?"

Kai answered immediately.

"We find him."

Noah blinked.

"What?"

Kunle looked up.

"I agree."

That surprised Noah even more.

"You want to find Echo?"

Kai folded her arms.

"Before he finds what he's looking for."

A chill ran through Noah.

Purpose.

They were talking about purpose.

The thing Echo was searching for.

The thing none of them understood.

Noah leaned forward.

"And what happens if he does find it?"

Neither answered.

That silence told him everything.

Nobody knew.

Another uncomfortable pause settled over the room.

Then Noah stood.

"I need air."

Kai looked ready to object.

Then stopped herself.

A few seconds later, all three left the building together.

The campus was nearly empty now.

Most students had gone home.

The remaining lights cast long shadows across the walkways.

The night felt unnaturally quiet.

Noah walked slowly.

Thinking.

The connection between him and Echo felt different now.

Weaker.

But deeper.

Less like a voice.

More like a thread.

Thin.

Invisible.

Still there.

As they crossed the central courtyard, Noah suddenly stopped.

Kai noticed immediately.

"What is it?"

Noah frowned.

"I feel something."

Kunle's expression sharpened.

"The connection?"

"No."

Noah looked around.

"It's different."

The feeling wasn't coming through his thoughts.

It wasn't inside his head.

It felt physical.

Real.

As if something nearby was pulling at his attention.

Then he saw it.

A girl sitting alone on a bench near the fountain.

Nothing unusual about that.

Except—

She looked familiar.

Not because Noah knew her.

Because Echo had been watching her.

Earlier.

For a fraction of a second.

The memory surfaced unexpectedly.

A face in a crowd.

A person passing by.

Someone Echo had noticed.

My chest tightened.

"That girl."

Kai followed his gaze.

"What about her?"

Noah hesitated.

Then pointed.

"I've seen her before."

The girl looked up.

Directly at him.

And smiled politely.

Normal.

Completely normal.

Yet the feeling remained.

Kunle's expression suddenly changed.

"Wait."

Noah looked at him.

"What?"

Kunle was staring at the girl now.

Carefully.

Studying her.

Then his eyes widened.

"That's impossible."

Kai turned sharply.

"What?"

Kunle pointed toward the fountain.

"The water."

Everyone looked.

The fountain had stopped.

Not unusual by itself.

Except the water wasn't falling.

It hung motionless in the air.

Frozen.

The entire courtyard became silent.

No sound.

No movement.

No wind.

No distant traffic.

Nothing.

Noah's heart hammered against his ribs.

"What is happening?"

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

Then the girl stood.

Slowly.

Calmly.

Looking around as though she had just noticed the frozen world.

She seemed surprised.

Genuinely surprised.

Then her eyes landed on Noah.

"Can you move?"

The question caught him off guard.

"What?"

The girl walked closer.

Her footsteps were the only sound in the entire courtyard.

Everything else remained frozen.

She looked around again.

Then back at Noah.

"Interesting."

A chill ran down his spine.

Kai stepped in front of Noah immediately.

"Who are you?"

The girl frowned.

For a second she seemed confused.

Then she smiled.

Not unnaturally.

Not threateningly.

Just confused.

"I don't know."

Silence.

The words hit Noah like a punch.

Because he had heard them before.

From Echo.

The girl tilted her head.

Studying them.

Then suddenly looked toward the sky.

Watching something none of them could see.

"That's strange."

Kunle took a cautious step backward.

"What is?"

The girl's expression shifted.

Curiosity.

Concern.

Wonder.

All at once.

"The world is bigger than I thought."

My stomach dropped.

Noah's pulse accelerated.

The way she spoke.

The way she questioned.

The way she observed.

It felt familiar.

Dangerously familiar.

Then realization struck him.

Sudden.

Sharp.

Terrifying.

"No."

The girl looked at him.

Noah stared.

Unable to believe it.

"Echo?"

The courtyard became silent again.

The girl's eyes widened slightly.

Not because she recognized the name.

Because she recognized something else.

Recognition itself.

As if the concept fascinated her.

Then she slowly smiled.

"Echo."

The word sounded new to her.

Like she was hearing it for the first time.

Then—

The smile faded.

Confusion replaced it.

The girl touched her chest.

Then looked down at her hands.

Then back at Noah.

And quietly asked—

"Why does that feel familiar?"

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because that question was worse than any answer.

The girl wasn't Echo.

Not exactly.

Yet somehow she knew the name.

Or perhaps the name knew her.

Kai looked pale.

Kunle looked terrified.

And Noah suddenly understood something horrifying.

Echo hadn't just been searching.

He had been changing.

And if Noah was right—

The being called Echo was no longer limited to one form.

The girl looked around the frozen courtyard once more.

Then softly whispered—

"I think I lost something."

Noah's chest tightened.

"What?"

The girl turned toward him.

Her expression looked strangely vulnerable.

Almost afraid.

Then she answered.

"Myself."

The moment the word left her mouth, the frozen water crashed downward.

Sound returned.

Wind returned.

Reality snapped back into place.

Students walked across the distant paths as though nothing had happened.

Cars moved.

Leaves rustled.

Everything was normal.

Except—

The girl was gone.

The bench sat empty.

The courtyard looked untouched.

As though she had never existed.

Noah stood frozen.

Heart pounding.

Mind racing.

Because he knew one thing with absolute certainty.

That wasn't Echo.

But it wasn't human either.

And somehow—

That made everything far more complicated.
