Chapter 21 - SYSTEM

He reached his chambers the door creaked softly as Kaelen pushed it open.

He paused at the threshold.

Something felt… off.

The air inside the room was unsettled, like the lingering ripple after a stone had been thrown into still water. His gaze swept across the space table, chair, the faint glow of a dim lantern…

Then the window.

Just in time to catch it.

A shadow peeled away from the frame, slipping into the night beyond with unnatural fluidity, as if it had never truly belonged to the world of light to begin with.

"—Intruder!"

Steel sang as his guard stepped forward, blade already half-drawn, killing intent rising instantly.

"I'll pursue…"

"Stand down."

Kaelen's voice cut through the tension.

The guard froze mid-step. "But…"

"I said stand down."

For a moment, only the faint rustle of curtains answered them, stirred by the night wind drifting through the open window.

Kaelen stepped inside, eyes still fixed on the darkness.

The room was unchanged. On his desk, a letter sat sealed with a crest he did not recognize. He picked it up, broke the seal, and read.

Kaelen,

The information you provided proved more valuable than any of us anticipated.

Following your instructions, I attended the gathering at the temple under the guise we discussed. What initially appeared to be a routine congregation revealed something far more troubling. Through careful observation and a few… guided conversations I was able to confirm the existence of a hidden sect operating within the city.

They are not merely worshippers of some obscure doctrine. This is a cult organized, deliberate, and dangerously adept in the use of forbidden magic.

Their activities center around the abduction of civilians. Not random, as one might assume, but targeted. The pattern suggests intent beyond simple sacrifice or experimentation. I have yet to determine their full purpose, but I suspect it is tied to something larger.

As for your other request I cross-referenced the list you provided.

Every individual whose name had been struck out…

…is dead.

No exceptions.

The manner of their deaths varies , some recorded as illness, others as accidents but the timing and consistency leave little room for coincidence. I believe these names represent completed objectives of the same group operating within the temple.

Which means the remaining names are not simply at risk.

They are next.

I advise immediate action. Whatever you intend to do, do it quickly. If this cult continues unchecked, the city will not remain ignorant for long and when the truth surfaces, it will not be quietly.

I will continue my investigation, but I must proceed with greater caution. There are signs they are becoming aware of scrutiny.

Burn this letter after reading.

[Letter Source: ???]

[Connection: Protagonist Network]

[Note: The sender is an ally of the protagonist. Their interests may align with yours. For now.]

Kaelen almost screamed. A cult, the original owner was part of a cult. He burnt the letter then moved to the window and looked out at the capital. The new information was making him tired.

He thought about the money he would need. The resources. The escape route he had been planning since the day he woke in this body. There was a port in the south, a city called Delver's Cove, that the novel had mentioned only in passing a place where the plagues and floods and dungeon breaks of the central provinces did not reach. It was not safe. No place in this world was safe. But it was safer than here, standing in the center of a web that was tightening with every passing day.

He needed money quickly now. Enough to buy passage for himself and anyone he brought. Enough to start over in a place where no one knew his name. Enough to disappear.

The system flickered:

[Resource Assessment: Estate Boundary]

[Detected Anomalies: 4]

[Note: Several minor mana concentrations detected within Verant estate boundaries. Further investigation may yield valuable resources.]

Kaelen stared at the window.

He smiled. It was a hunter's smile, sharp and cold.

Here is how I would write that scene as a story segment—Kaelen opening the system shop for the first time and seeing what he could buy.

Kaelen sat cross‑legged on the floor of his chambers, the fire burned low, and the system interface hovered at the edge of his vision.

"What are the skills?"

The interface flickered, then expanded.

The first category unfolded

SKILLS

Mana Sense – 2500 points. Detect mana concentrations, weak points, and hidden resources within fifty meters. Passive. Enhanced Reflexes – 2000 points. Temporarily boost reaction speed by thirty percent for thirty seconds. Five‑minute cooldown. Pain Suppression – 1000points. Ignore physical pain from injuries for one hour. Does not prevent damage. Combat Prediction – 250 points. Anticipate an opponent's next move based on muscle tension and positioning. Seventy percent accuracy. Mana Thread – 1800 points. Create a thin, nearly invisible thread of mana that can lift light objects or trip enemies. Body Reinforcement (Basic) – 3000 points. Increase physical strength and durability by twenty percent for ten minutes. Drains mana continuously.

Kaelen read each one twice. Useful, but damn expensive.

He scrolled past. The second category was smaller, more utilitarian.

WEAPONS

Steel Shortsword – 800 points. Standard issue. Durable, balanced. No enchantments. Hunting Dagger (pair) – 600 points. Light, concealable. Five percent bonus to critical strike chance. Reinforced Longbow – 1200 points. Range of one hundred fifty meters. Requires strength threshold. Mana‑Infused Knife – 2000 points. Holds a small mana charge. On hit, releases a shock that stuns weak enemies. Tower Shield – 1500 points. Heavy. Provides cover against arrows and low‑level magic. Whipblade – 1800 points. Segmented blade that can extend to three meters. Difficult to master.

Hunting daggers seemed useful, also what he could afford.

He scrolled again. The third category was the strangest. A mishmash of consumables and trinkets, each with a price tag that made him pause.

OTHER

Minor Healing Potion – 4000 points. Restores fifteen percent of max health over ten seconds. Mana Recovery Tincture – 5000 points. Restores twenty mana points instantly. Stoneskin Salve – 7000 points. Increases physical defense by twenty‑five percent for one hour. Glowstone – 1500 points. Small stone that emits light for sixteen hours. Reusable. Storage Pouch – 10000 points. Contains two by ten meters of extradimensional space. Cannot store living things. Skill Reset Token – 5000 points. Refunds points spent luck drawn skill. One‑time use.

10000 for a storage pouch? 1500 for a glow stone?

He scrolled

At the bottom of the interface, a separate window pulsed softly.

POINT EXCHANGE

Mana Dense Stone – Exchange for 150 points each.

. Contracted entity: Exchange for ???

Current holdings

.2 mana dense stones

.The watcher's ledger

He gave the stone to Doran cause he knew people like him were loyal and the people in the camp followed him without question. The other two sat in the system.

He could see the system was ripping him off none of the products shown were even close to 150 points. He'd rather keep them.

LOCKED CATEGORIES

He scrolled to the bottom of the shop, where the texts were greyed out.

??? – Requires bond threshold. ??? – Requires knowledge discovery. ??? – Requires system update.

Kaelen closed the shop interface and went to sleep as he was closing his eyes he asked one last question.

"Wait what is a contracted entity?"

The system glowed and before he could see his body gave in and he fell a sleep.
