Kaelen woke in his own bed, he felt well relaxed, so relaxed he almost forgot he had just closed a seal.
The ceiling was familiar, the cracks in the plaster, the water stain in the corner that looked like a bird in flight. Sunlight cut through the window, pale and cold, and Sprite lay curled on his chest, the beast's ember eyes watching him with something that might have been concern.
He did not remember getting home.
The last thing he remembered was Lysander's arms around him and the king's voice soft flowing in his body.
He sat up slowly, his body ached, his head pounded. His hands were wrapped in clean bandages, the fabric white and tight, and someone had washed the blood from his skin. He wore a clean shirt, soft linen, not his own.
Sprite chirped and butted its head against his chin.
The system flickered.
