Chapter 4 — The Dinner of Oddities
Marvin stood in the middle of the dining hall, staring at a long wooden table that definitely hadn't been there yesterday.
"…Okay," he said slowly. "I didn't build this."
DING!
System Notification: Basic Dining Hall Unlocked.
New Function: Host Events to Increase Guest Satisfaction.
Marvin scratched his head. "So now I'm an event planner too?"
The table stretched across the room, polished to a shine, with chairs that adjusted themselves as if waiting for guests of different shapes and sizes. Plates appeared one after another, followed by utensils that floated gently into place.
One fork spun in the air, then stabbed itself into the table.
Marvin flinched. "Right… definitely not normal."
DING!
Quest Assigned: Host Your First Official Dinner.
Objective: Maintain Guest Harmony Above 60%.
Reward: Guest Harmony Meter.
Marvin stared at the words.
"…What happens if I fail?"
The system remained silent.
"…Yeah, I don't like that."
The doors creaked open.
Guests began to enter.
The Star-Kind Traveler took a seat gracefully, glowing faintly like a walking constellation. The Flameborne Wanderer sat opposite, its flames flickering calmly—though the wooden chair beneath it smoldered slightly.
Glimmerfin splashed onto the table, forming a small puddle that shimmered with light.
Then came a new guest.
A small creature waddled in, no taller than Marvin's knee. Its body was made entirely of water, glowing softly, with fins that sparkled like glass.
DING!
Guest Registered: Glimmerfin
Guest Tier: Common (Unique Variant)
Marvin blinked. "Wait… weren't you already here?"
Glimmerfin made a happy bubbling sound.
"…I'm not even going to question it."
Another guest followed.
Heavy footsteps echoed through the hall.
A large figure ducked through the doorway—broad shoulders, metallic skin, and a jaw that looked like it could bite through stone.
But its eyes were… gentle.
DING!
Guest Registered: Ironjaw
Guest Tier: Uncommon
Ironjaw sat down carefully, as if afraid of breaking the chair.
"Host," he said in a deep voice. "Do you serve riddles here?"
Marvin froze.
"…Riddles?"
The Whispering Shadow appeared behind him.
"I do," it whispered.
Marvin looked between them.
"…Of course you do."
DING!
Guest Harmony Level: 72%
Marvin exhaled. "Okay… not bad."
The plates suddenly filled with food.
Except… it wasn't normal food.
One dish floated like a cloud.
Another shimmered like liquid metal.
One plate held something that kept changing shape every few seconds.
Marvin picked up a spoon, then quickly put it down. "Yeah, I'm not eating that."
The Star-Kind Traveler took a bite of glowing light.
Glimmerfin absorbed its food directly.
Ironjaw… stared at his plate.
Then, very carefully, he picked up a fork.
The fork immediately shot out of his hand and began spinning in the air.
Marvin blinked.
"…That's new."
Suddenly, all the utensils started moving.
Forks zipped across the table.
Knives floated upward.
Spoons spun like tiny storms.
"HEY!" Marvin shouted. "Calm down!"
DING!
Warning: Magical Instability Detected. Guest Harmony Decreasing.
The number dropped.
72% → 65% → 58%
Marvin panicked. "Wait wait wait—this is going down too fast!"
Glimmerfin splashed wildly as a spoon bounced off its head.
Ironjaw tried to grab a knife, only for it to dodge him like it had a mind of its own.
The Flameborne Wanderer's flames flared, heating the air.
The Whispering Shadow whispered louder, its riddles overlapping into a confusing echo.
Everything was turning into chaos.
Marvin clenched his fists. "Think! Think!"
Then he remembered.
"Guest Harmony Meter… no, not yet… but I have—"
"Observation Lens!"
He activated it.
Colors burst into view.
Red. Yellow. Flickering orange.
Everyone was getting irritated.
Except one.
The Star-Kind Traveler remained calm—glowing a steady green.
Marvin ran to it. "Hey! How do I fix this?!"
The Traveler looked up, unbothered.
"Balance," it said simply. "You must stabilize the flow."
"…Flow?" Marvin repeated.
Then he realized.
Just like the Garden.
The energy in the room was unstable.
The magic. The movement. The tension.
"…So I control it."
He took a deep breath and focused.
The air shimmered.
A small section of the table calmed.
The floating utensils slowed.
"Yes… yes, that's it!"
He expanded the effect.
One by one, the chaotic movements softened.
Forks gently dropped back onto plates.
Knives settled.
Spoons stopped spinning.
The room grew quiet.
DING!
Guest Harmony Level: 61%… 65%… 70%
Marvin collapsed into a chair. "I'm never hosting dinner again."
Ironjaw nodded approvingly. "Good control."
Glimmerfin made a happy splash.
The Flameborne Wanderer relaxed, its flames dimming.
The Whispering Shadow whispered softly, almost… pleased.
The Star-Kind Traveler smiled.
"Your house listens to you," it said. "That is rare."
Marvin let out a tired laugh. "Yeah… I just wish it came with instructions."
DING!
Quest Completed: Host Your First Official Dinner.
Reward Unlocked: Guest Harmony Meter.
A new panel appeared before him.
He glanced at it, then shook his head.
"…I'm definitely going to need this."
As the guests resumed their meal—this time without flying utensils—Marvin leaned back and closed his eyes for a second.
Maybe… just maybe… he was starting to get the hang of this.
But deep within the Guest House…
A faint crack echoed.
Soft.
Almost unnoticeable.
Something, somewhere, was beginning to break.
