The Moss Fang Ape froze.
For one terrible moment, the entire clearing fell silent.
Connor's gauntlets remained buried in the creature's ribs.
Then—
CRAAAAAAACK
Connor twisted his arms with everything he had.
The ape's body jerked violently.
"GRAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!" GRRRRRR AHHH
Its roar shook the ancient trees, sending leaves and branches raining down from above.
The glowing blue mana vines tightened around its limbs as Tina struggled to maintain her control.
"Connor! GET BACK!"
Connor gritted his teeth.
"NOT YET!"
The Moss Fang Ape slammed one hand against the ground, trying to push itself upright.
Its four amber eyes burned with fury.
Then something strange happened.
A deep green light began spreading across its body.
Tina's eyes widened.
"Wait..."
Silver rings spun rapidly around her pupils.
"That's not normal!"
Mira lowered her bow slightly.
"What do you mean?"
"The mana inside its body is changing!"
Kage suddenly emerged from the shadows behind the creature.
His expression was unusually serious.
"Connor! Get away from it!"
Connor glanced over his shoulder.
"Why?!"
"JUST MOVE!"
A deafening pulse of energy erupted from the ape.
BOOOOOOOOOOM!
The blue vines shattered.
Connor was thrown backward, crashing through a thick tree branch before hitting the ground.
"CONNOR!" Mira screamed.
Tina stumbled, dropping to one knee as the remaining energy from her spell dispersed.
Kage crossed his blades in front of his chest as the shockwave swept through the clearing.
When the dust finally settled...
The Moss Fang Ape was still kneeling.
Its enormous chest heaved.
Its wounds slowly began closing.
And the four amber eyes that had once stared at the group with animalistic fury now glowed with an eerie green light.
Tina swallowed.
"...Oh no."
Mira turned toward her.
"What?"
Tina's voice trembled.
"That wasn't its final form."
Kage slowly lowered his swords.
"...Then what was it?"
Tina stared at the monster.
The Moss Fang Ape slowly rose to its full height.
And for the first time since the battle began...
