Chapter 1 - Tangled beginnings

Sophie Evans had always thought of herself as a quiet observer in a world that loved chaos. At twenty-one, she was a junior at a bustling American university in the Midwest, juggling literature classes, late-night study sessions, and a social life that was carefully curated—sometimes too carefully. Her dorm room reflected her: soft fairy lights, stacks of notebooks, and sketches scattered across the desk, each a fragment of her thoughts. She liked to believe she was in control, but certain people had a way of unraveling her. Christian was one of them.

Christian. Just saying his name made Sophie's chest tighten. Tall, athletic, and effortlessly charming, he had a laugh that could make any lecture feel irrelevant. He wasn't her boyfriend, not officially. But the way he lingered too long in hallways, the subtle touches in the library, and the nights they spent walking back from the quad made their relationship messy, undeniable, and thrilling.

Sophie met him outside the campus café that morning, the smell of fresh coffee and pastries wafting around them. Christian was late—of course—but she didn't mind. Waiting for him was part of the game. She leaned against the brick wall, checking her phone for the third time in five minutes. When he finally appeared, hair tousled and hoodie slung casually over one shoulder, her lips curved into a smirk.

"Late again," she said, hiding the smile in her voice.

"Fashionably," Christian replied, flashing that crooked grin she hated and loved all at once. "Wouldn't want to disappoint."

Around them, the campus buzzed with energy. Students walked in clusters, some heading to the library, others spilling out of lecture halls with backpacks slung carelessly over one shoulder. Sophie loved this energy—it made her feel alive, like everything was possible. And with Christian by her side, every moment felt charged, electric.

They grabbed coffees and walked toward the quad, where students lounged on blankets, earbuds in, or laptops open, cramming for exams or scrolling endlessly. Christian kept stealing glances at her, a teasing smile playing on his lips, and Sophie felt the familiar heat bloom in her chest.

"You've been sketching again?" he asked, nodding toward the notebook she always carried.

"Trying," she admitted, hugging it to her chest. "Campus life isn't exactly quiet, but inspiration finds a way."

Christian tilted his head, squinting at her sketches. "Messy, chaotic… perfect. That's you."

Sophie laughed softly, shaking her head. He always had a way of making her feel seen, even when she didn't want to be. They found a quiet bench under an old oak tree, where they could talk without shouting over passing students. Conversation flowed naturally teasing, laughter, and subtle touches that lingered too long. Every glance, every laugh, every accidental brush of fingers made the boundaries between them blur.

As the afternoon sun dipped, casting long shadows across the quad, Sophie realized how much she craved his presence. Christian wasn't hers. He wasn't promised to her. And yet, somehow, he dominated her thoughts in a way she didn't fully understand—or want to fight.

When they parted near the dorms, Christian paused and met her gaze, his fingers brushing hers one last time. No words were needed; the tension spoke for itself. Sophie walked into her building, heart still racing, thinking: some connections were messy, dangerous, and completely irresistible. And some, she decided, were worth every risk—even if they existed only in the spaces between lectures, library corners, and fleeting afternoons on a college campus. She couldn't wait to tell Maya(Her best friend ) what happened.
