Chapter 57 - Subtle Sabotage and Sweet Victories

The morning air on campus was crisp, carrying the scent of freshly cut grass and the faint buzz of distant conversations. Mau walked briskly toward the simulation lab, her bag slung over one shoulder, mind already running through the day's schedule. Tim trailed beside her, coffee in hand, his grin mischievous as ever.

"You look like you're planning to take over the world before breakfast," he teased.

"World domination requires preparation," Mau replied smoothly, letting her fingers brush against his as they walked. "And apparently, you're in on the plan."

Tim's smile softened. "I'll follow your lead. Always."

They exchanged a quick, playful kiss on the cheek—a ritual that had become their small, private rebellion against the world's demands.

Meanwhile, Lira was already at her station. Subtlety was her weapon, and patience her ally.

A misplaced note to an intern here. A slightly altered schedule for M Designs updates there. A gentle suggestion whispered to a faculty assistant: "Maybe Mau double-checks her instruments next time… just to be safe."

Each move was minor on its own—tiny ripples—but when combined, they could create hesitation, doubt, or distraction at precisely the wrong moment. Lira didn't want to destroy Mau. She wanted control. She wanted attention. She wanted the girl from the village back—her, unclaimed, without Tim or anyone else standing between them.

Her chest tightened as she watched Mau enter the lab, calm and poised, unaware of the first seeds of disruption she had sown.

The medical simulation contest that day was a whirlwind of observation, precision, and pressure. Mau navigated every station with steady hands and razor-sharp focus. Even when a minor software glitch threatened to throw off the procedure, she adapted instantly, recalculating and correcting, leaving the judges nodding in impressed approval.

Tim watched from the sidelines, admiration and pride written across his face. "You're incredible," he whispered under his breath, unable to hide his awe.

Mau caught his gaze briefly and smiled—a soft, reassuring curve of her lips. "Thanks," she murmured, brushing her fingers lightly against his when no one was looking.

Lunch was a quiet affair. Mau and Tim found a secluded bench beneath a tree, hands entwined, sharing small, personal jokes and snippets of conversation only they understood.

"You're infuriatingly organized," Tim said, grinning as he stirred his coffee.

"And you're infuriatingly relaxed," Mau countered. "Somehow, it works."

He leaned closer, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "I like how it works. Especially when it's us."

Mau's lips curved into a gentle smile. "Especially when it's us," she echoed.

A quiet kiss followed—soft, lingering, a promise hidden in plain sight. For that moment, nothing else mattered. Not the contests, not the designs, not the lurking jealousy—it was just them.

But Lira's eyes followed them from a distance. Her heart ached with a mixture of longing and envy. Each stolen glance, each subtle touch between Mau and Tim, felt like a silent reminder that the world she once shared with Mau had shifted.

"I just need one crack," Lira whispered to herself. "One small crack, and I'll find my way back in."

She didn't move from her spot. She didn't interfere directly yet. Instead, she observed, noted patterns, and let her plans simmer like a quiet storm.

The afternoon brought M Designs updates, and Amber and Aida noticed small irregularities—a delayed upload here, a missing attachment there—but nothing significant enough to alarm them.

"It's minor," Amber said, frowning at the screen. "Probably just server issues."

"Or someone testing us," Aida suggested, suspicion flickering in her eyes.

Lira, sitting quietly nearby, said nothing. But her fingers hovered over the keyboard, ready to intervene at just the right moment.

By evening, Mau and Tim found themselves walking across the quiet campus rooftops again, the city lights sparkling below like distant stars.

"You know," Tim murmured, leaning close, "I never thought I'd be this… completely wrapped up in someone."

Mau laughed softly, brushing her fingers over his. "Wrapped up is a dangerous word. Are you sure you want that?"

"I'm sure," he replied firmly, pressing a gentle kiss to her temple. "Especially with you."

Her heart softened, the day's pressures melting away for a moment. She leaned against him, resting her head on his shoulder, savoring the quiet intimacy that felt like a rare treasure in her chaotic life.

Yet even as they shared laughter, kisses, and whispered secrets, the shadows lingered. Lira's subtle manipulations were already threading through M Designs and the campus contests. Tiny ripples had begun—minor distractions that, if unchecked, could grow into more serious disruptions.

The game had begun, and Mau's brilliance, Tim's devotion, and the trio's teamwork would soon be tested like never before.

Because even amidst love and success, envy had a way of creeping in, quiet as a whisper, sharp as a blade.
