Chapter 166 - Chapter 166: The Western District

The corridors of Frostwatch seemed different now.

Only minutes earlier, they had felt abandoned.

Empty.

Silent.

Now every shadow appeared threatening.

Every corner seemed capable of concealing something unseen.

The moment General Caelan's order echoed through the communication crystal, the entire fortress had transformed in the minds of the expedition members. The mystery was no longer distant. It was no longer something hidden within reports and unfinished journals.

Something had been seen.

Something was moving inside Frostwatch.

And nobody knew what it was.

The group ran through the frozen corridors, their footsteps echoing against ancient stone while cold air rushed past them. The fortress had been designed as a military installation, which meant its hallways were broad enough for armored soldiers to move through efficiently. Under normal circumstances, navigating the structure would have been easy.

Under current circumstances, every intersection felt wrong.

Aren was breathing heavily beside Kael.

Not because he was tired.

Because he was nervous.

The boy glanced over his shoulder for what felt like the tenth time in less than a minute.

"You know what bothers me?"

Nobody answered.

Aren continued anyway.

"The fact that we haven't seen a single body."

Lyra's expression darkened.

She had clearly been thinking the same thing.

The absence of evidence was becoming impossible to ignore.

Four hundred people didn't simply disappear.

There should have been something.

Anything.

Yet Frostwatch remained perfectly preserved.

Almost untouched.

As though its inhabitants had simply ceased to exist.

Draven adjusted his grip on his weapon.

"Focus."

"I'm trying."

"No. You're talking."

Aren looked offended.

"I can do both."

Nobody believed him.

The group rounded another corner and entered a wider corridor connecting several sections of the fortress.

Other expedition teams were converging from different directions.

Students.

Soldiers.

Officers.

Everyone was moving toward the western district.

The tension hanging in the air felt almost physical.

Nobody was joking anymore.

Nobody was relaxed.

Even Selene appeared unusually focused.

That alone demonstrated how serious the situation had become.

The western district occupied one of the outer sections of Frostwatch near the fortress walls. According to the maps, it primarily consisted of residential buildings, supply storage facilities, and maintenance structures.

Not exactly the sort of place one expected to discover ancient mysteries.

Yet whatever had triggered the alert was there.

A communication crystal attached to Serena's belt suddenly activated.

Static filled the air.

Then a familiar voice emerged.

"All units maintain formation."

General Caelan sounded calm.

Perhaps too calm.

The military commander continued.

"No independent investigations."

A brief pause followed.

Then:

"If contact occurs, report immediately."

The crystal dimmed.

Aren frowned.

"Contact."

Nobody liked that word.

Not here.

Not now.

The group eventually emerged into an open courtyard.

Snow covered most of the ground despite the fortress walls surrounding the district. Several residential buildings overlooked the area while narrow streets stretched toward distant towers.

The place looked deserted.

Yet dozens of soldiers had already gathered.

Military officers stood near the center of the courtyard speaking quietly with General Caelan.

The atmosphere was grim.

Kael immediately noticed something else.

Weapons.

Everyone had drawn weapons.

Even veteran soldiers.

Whatever had been reported, it had convinced experienced military personnel to take the situation seriously.

That wasn't reassuring.

The group approached.

General Caelan noticed them immediately.

His silver eyes moved across the students briefly before returning to the officers.

"Report."

One of the soldiers stepped forward.

The man looked unsettled.

Not frightened.

Unsettled.

Which somehow felt worse.

"We observed movement near Building Seventeen."

The officer pointed toward one of the structures overlooking the courtyard.

A three-story residential building stood near the western wall.

From the outside, it appeared completely ordinary.

The soldier continued.

"Three individuals confirmed the sighting."

General Caelan nodded.

"What did they see?"

The officer hesitated.

Only briefly.

Then answered.

"A person."

Silence followed.

Aren blinked.

"A person?"

Several students exchanged confused glances.

The answer wasn't what anyone expected.

The soldier nodded.

"A figure standing near one of the upper windows."

The courtyard remained quiet.

That somehow felt less reassuring than a monster.

General Caelan folded his arms.

"What happened next?"

The officer looked toward the building.

"It disappeared."

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then Aren raised his hand.

Nobody knew why.

General Caelan ignored him.

The boy lowered it sadly.

The military commander studied the building.

Then looked toward several nearby officers.

"Search team."

Orders were immediately issued.

Soldiers moved into position.

Defensive formations formed around the courtyard.

The operation proceeded with remarkable efficiency.

Years of training were visible in every movement.

Within minutes, a heavily armed team approached the building.

Everyone watched.

The atmosphere became tense.

The search team entered.

The doors closed behind them.

And then—

Nothing happened.

Minutes passed.

The courtyard remained silent.

Snow drifted across abandoned pathways.

The wind howled softly beyond the fortress walls.

The waiting became increasingly uncomfortable.

Aren eventually shifted nervously.

"I hate this part."

"What part?"

"The part where everyone waits."

Nobody argued.

Waiting was often worse than action.

At least action provided answers.

Eventually, the doors reopened.

The search team emerged.

Their expressions revealed everything before they even spoke.

Nothing.

They had found nothing.

The officer leading the team approached General Caelan and shook his head.

"Building clear."

A murmur spread through the gathered students.

The military commander frowned.

The officer continued.

"No signs of recent occupation."

A pause.

"No footprints."

Another pause.

"No evidence."

The same story again.

The pattern was becoming frustrating.

Every clue seemed to vanish the moment someone investigated it.

General Caelan looked toward the upper windows.

For a moment, his expression remained unreadable.

Then he issued another order.

"Expand the search."

The operation resumed.

Teams spread throughout the western district.

Buildings were searched.

Streets were inspected.

Every possible lead was investigated.

Hours passed.

Nothing.

The sun slowly climbed higher above the frozen horizon.

Still nothing.

The feeling of unease only grew stronger.

Because now everyone knew something important.

The sighting had been real.

Three trained soldiers had reported it.

Yet no evidence remained.

No tracks.

No signs.

Nothing.

Aren eventually found himself sitting on a supply crate near the edge of the district.

The boy looked exhausted.

Not physically.

Mentally.

"This place is making me paranoid."

Selene sat nearby cleaning her weapon.

"Only now?"

Aren pointed dramatically.

"I was healthy before this."

Nobody believed that.

The golden-eyed girl smirked slightly.

The small moment of humor helped.

A little.

The expedition needed it.

Because morale was slowly deteriorating.

Every hour spent inside Frostwatch increased the pressure.

Questions continued piling up.

Answers remained nonexistent.

Kael looked toward the fortress wall overlooking the frozen wilderness beyond.

The landscape stretched endlessly toward the horizon.

Mountains.

Forests.

Snow.

An entire world buried beneath ice.

Somewhere out there stood the monument.

The thought lingered in his mind.

Everything seemed connected to it somehow.

The disappearances.

The warnings.

The strange sense of anticipation.

The problem was that nobody knew how.

A sudden shout interrupted his thoughts.

Everyone reacted immediately.

Soldiers moved.

Weapons appeared.

The source of the commotion stood near one of the district's observation towers.

A young soldier was pointing upward.

General Caelan reached the scene first.

The rest followed.

A crowd quickly formed beneath the tower.

The soldier looked pale.

His hand remained pointed toward the upper levels.

"What happened?"

General Caelan's voice cut through the noise instantly.

The young man swallowed.

Then answered.

"I saw someone."

Silence.

Again.

The same report.

The soldier pointed upward.

"Top floor."

Everyone looked.

The observation tower rose above the district, its upper windows overlooking both the fortress and the frozen wilderness beyond.

At first, nothing appeared unusual.

Then Kael saw it.

A silhouette.

Standing behind one of the windows.

Motionless.

Watching.

The courtyard became completely silent.

Because this time, dozens of people saw it.

Not three soldiers.

Not a single witness.

Everyone.

The figure stood perfectly still.

Its features remained impossible to distinguish at this distance.

Only the outline was visible.

Human.

Or at least humanoid.

Aren slowly stepped backward.

"That's a person."

Nobody answered.

The figure didn't move.

It simply stood there.

Watching.

General Caelan's expression hardened.

Several officers immediately began organizing another search team.

This time, however, something changed.

The silhouette moved.

Not much.

Not dramatically.

It simply tilted its head slightly.

As though observing the people gathered below.

A chill ran through Kael's spine.

Because somehow—

It felt aware.

The courtyard remained frozen.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody looked away.

The figure continued watching.

Then, without warning—

It vanished.

Not by stepping away.

Not by retreating into the shadows.

It simply disappeared.

One moment it existed.

The next moment it didn't.

A collective murmur spread through the crowd.

The reaction was immediate.

Search teams rushed toward the tower.

Soldiers moved.

Officers shouted orders.

The entire district erupted into activity.

Yet Kael remained standing where he was.

Because something felt wrong.

Very wrong.

The figure hadn't looked surprised.

It hadn't looked frightened.

It hadn't looked like someone caught hiding.

It had looked calm.

Almost curious.

As though it wanted to be seen.

The realization sent another chill through him.

Beside him, Lyra frowned.

"You felt it too."

It wasn't a question.

Kael nodded slowly.

Aren looked between them.

"What?"

Neither answered immediately.

Because neither knew how to explain it.

The figure had only appeared for a few seconds.

Yet those few seconds felt deliberate.

Intentional.

Like a message.

Like a warning.

Or perhaps an invitation.

Far beyond the fortress walls, the frozen wilderness stretched toward endless horizons hidden beneath snow and ancient ice.

Somewhere within that vast wilderness stood the black monument.

Somewhere within that wilderness, entire expeditions had disappeared.

And now, for the first time since arriving at Frostwatch, it felt as though whatever mystery waited in the frontier had finally noticed them.

And was beginning to notice them back.
