Chapter 261 - Chapter 261: The Choice That Refused to Exist

Silence engulfed the Fifth Lock.

Three figures stood within the silver light.

Aren.

Lyra.

Selene.

Each faced a different fate.

A collapsing fortress.

A forbidden spell.

A forgotten truth.

The Watcher's voice echoed once more.

**"Choose."**

Kael did not move.

His breathing slowed until even the sea of possibilities seemed to wait with him.

The Keeper strained against the silver chains binding his body.

"Kael..."

His voice was unusually urgent.

"Do not answer lightly."

The chains tightened.

Even someone as powerful as the Keeper could only watch.

The silver eyes remained emotionless.

They had seen this countless times before.

Every Gardener.

Every candidate.

Every one of them had eventually made the same mistake.

Kael looked toward Aren first.

His oldest companion stood with shield raised against an endless tide of darkness.

He was exhausted.

His armor was broken.

Blood dripped from countless wounds.

Yet his expression remained steady.

Aren smiled.

The same smile he had worn years ago when he shared his meal with a lonely first-year student.

"If one of us has to stay..."

"...I'll stay."

The vision faded.

Kael turned toward Lyra.

She stood before an enormous magic circle.

Ancient runes floated around her.

The forbidden spell had already consumed half of her body.

Silver cracks spread across her skin.

She looked at Kael and smiled gently.

"You always carry everyone."

"...Just this once..."

"...let me carry something too."

The light shifted again.

Selene stood alone inside a library that no longer existed.

Every page around her burned into ash.

The book in her hands glowed with unbearable brilliance.

She already knew what would happen if she read it.

She would disappear.

Every record.

Every memory.

Every trace.

Gone forever.

Yet she calmly adjusted her glasses.

"If someone must remember..."

"...then the truth is worth the price."

The three visions merged once more.

The Watcher spoke.

**"Probability analysis complete."**

**"One life."**

**"Three outcomes."**

**"Choose."**

Kael lowered his head.

The sea of possibilities fell silent.

The mysterious stars around him began flickering.

One by one...

Future after future vanished.

The Keeper closed his eyes.

"This..."

"...is how it always begins."

Kael suddenly spoke.

"No."

The Watcher remained silent.

"I reject the question."

The silver eyes blinked.

For the first time...

The Watcher's calculations paused.

**"Invalid response."**

Kael slowly looked upward.

"You've given me three answers."

"But they're all wrong."

The Watcher's voice remained perfectly calm.

**"One survival."**

**"Maximum efficiency."**

Kael shook his head.

"Efficiency isn't justice."

The pressure inside the Fifth Lock intensified.

Thousands of stars exploded into silver dust.

The Watcher's voice became louder.

**"Every choice demands sacrifice."**

Kael nodded.

"I know."

"Then choose."

"I already have."

Silence.

The Watcher waited.

Kael's eyes never left the silver beam.

"I refuse to abandon any of them."

The sea of possibilities trembled.

The Keeper's eyes widened.

The Watcher's countless eyes slowly narrowed.

**"Impossible."**

Kael smiled faintly.

"It probably is."

"But impossible things happen."

He remembered the forgotten child who had returned a wooden bird.

He remembered Eli protecting names that no one else remembered.

He remembered Old Rowan laughing beneath the World Tree despite knowing the end was coming.

He remembered Aren.

Lyra.

Selene.

None of them had ever chosen the easy answer.

The Gardener's Key began glowing.

Not with silver light.

With countless different colors.

Blue.

Gold.

Green.

Crimson.

Every branch blossomed at once.

The Watcher's voice echoed again.

**"Logic conflict."**

Kael took one step toward the three visions.

"If saving one means betraying two..."

"...then I haven't found the right path yet."

The Keeper whispered,

"...No..."

His voice trembled.

"...He isn't rejecting sacrifice."

"...He's rejecting false choices."

The silver chains around the Keeper cracked.

One link shattered.

The sea of possibilities suddenly erupted with light.

Stars that had already disappeared began returning.

Not because time reversed.

Because new possibilities were being born.

The Watcher's calculations accelerated.

Across the heavens, countless silver symbols appeared.

**"Unknown variable detected."**

Kael continued walking.

"There are moments when someone must be sacrificed."

"I understand that."

His voice remained calm.

"But before making that decision..."

"I will search."

"I will struggle."

"I will fail."

"And if there is even one chance..."

"...no matter how small..."

"...I'll create a fourth path."

The final words echoed endlessly.

**"...a fourth path."**

The Fifth Lock shook violently.

The three visions shattered into fragments of light.

Aren.

Lyra.

Selene.

All disappeared.

The silver beam collapsed.

The Watcher fell silent.

For several long moments...

Nothing happened.

Then the Keeper laughed.

Not a quiet chuckle.

Not a gentle smile.

He laughed with genuine joy.

"So that's it..."

"So that's why..."

Tears appeared in his eyes.

"I finally understand."

Kael looked at him.

"What?"

The Keeper slowly approached.

The broken chains fell away from his body.

"I kept wondering why the Fifth Lock still existed."

"Why the World Tree never destroyed it."

"Why every Gardener before you failed."

He looked directly into Kael's eyes.

"They accepted the question."

"You questioned the question itself."

The sea of possibilities burst into bloom.

Millions...

Billions...

Trillions of new stars were born in an instant.

Each represented a future that had never existed before.

Not because fate had changed.

Because one person had refused to believe there were only three choices.

Across the fractured heavens, the countless silver eyes remained perfectly still.

For the first time...

The Watcher did not speak.

Its endless calculations had encountered something it could not predict.

Human hope.

The Keeper placed a hand on Kael's shoulder.

"You've just done something no Gardener has ever accomplished."

Kael frowned.

"What did I do?"

The Keeper looked toward the newborn stars.

"You proved..."

"...that possibility itself can grow."

Far beyond the Fifth Lock...

The World Tree suddenly blossomed.

Leaves of every color unfurled across its ancient branches.

Old Rowan looked up and laughed.

"Eli..."

He whispered.

"He did it."

In the Hall of Forgotten Names, the blue lantern burned brighter than it ever had before.

Even the forgotten souls looked toward the distant heavens.

Because somewhere beyond memory...

A single impossible future had just been born.

A future that neither the World Tree...

Nor the Watcher...

Had ever foreseen.
