Chapter 272 - Chapter 272: The Twelve Gardeners

The emerald gate continued to open.

Not with force.

Not with the deafening roar of ancient machinery.

Instead...

It opened like the petals of a flower greeting the morning sun.

The twelve silhouettes remained still.

None of them stepped forward.

None radiated crushing power.

Yet the mere sight of them caused every branch of the World Tree, countless realities away, to rustle as though bowing before forgotten masters.

Kael instinctively tightened his grip around the Gardener's Key.

The six completed branches glowed softly.

The seventh bud remained closed.

Waiting.

Beside him, Orion lowered his head.

The Keeper did the same.

Even the Child of Dreams stopped smiling.

Only Elara remained standing upright.

Her emerald eyes reflected both joy and sadness.

"They've finally awakened..."

Kael quietly asked,

"They're the ones who planted the World Tree?"

Elara nodded.

"Yes."

"They were the first to answer the Dream."

The oldest voice spoke again.

"Come."

It was neither commanding nor gentle.

It simply carried the certainty of someone inviting another home after a long journey.

Kael took one step forward.

Orion immediately placed a hand upon his shoulder.

"Wait."

Kael turned.

Orion's usually calm expression had become unusually serious.

"If you cross that gate..."

"...you will never again see the world with the same eyes."

Kael smiled faintly.

"I don't think I already do."

Orion laughed quietly.

"No."

"I suppose you don't."

The emerald path stretched from Kael's feet to the ancient gate.

Flowers bloomed beneath every step.

As he crossed the threshold...

The warmth surrounding him vanished.

Not into coldness.

Into something impossible to describe.

It felt...

Older than warmth.

Older than light.

Older than existence itself.

Then...

He arrived.

...

There was no sky.

Yet endless stars drifted peacefully overhead.

There was no earth.

Yet soft grass stretched beneath his feet.

Mountains floated upside down among clouds woven from silver roots.

Rivers flowed upward, disappearing into forests suspended in the heavens.

Gigantic blossoms larger than kingdoms slowly opened and closed, releasing entire galaxies like glowing pollen.

Time itself seemed uncertain here.

A single flower bloomed.

Withered.

Bloomed again.

All within the same heartbeat.

Kael quietly whispered,

"...Beautiful."

One of the twelve smiled.

"It is."

They slowly approached.

Now Kael could finally see them clearly.

They were not identical.

One appeared as an elderly woman whose silver hair flowed into flowering vines.

Another looked like a young man carrying a simple wooden watering can.

A child no older than ten held a lantern filled with tiny stars.

A middle-aged woman wore simple gardener's gloves stained with soil.

An old man leaned upon a shovel carved from crystal roots.

None wore crowns.

None carried weapons.

None resembled rulers.

They looked...

Ordinary.

Like people one might pass in a quiet village.

Yet each possessed a Gardener's Key with seven blooming branches.

The eldest among them smiled warmly.

"You expected gods."

Kael nodded honestly.

"A little."

The old woman laughed.

"We made the same mistake once."

Another Gardener stepped forward.

His beard reached almost to the ground.

"Power isn't what makes a Gardener."

"It never was."

The child holding the lantern tilted their head.

"Do you know why trees grow upward?"

Kael blinked.

"I..."

"No."

"They don't."

Kael frowned.

"They grow toward light."

The child smiled brightly.

"Exactly."

"They simply follow hope."

Kael looked around once more.

"This place..."

"What is it?"

The elderly woman answered.

"The First Garden."

"The place where the very first possibility became life."

Kael slowly looked down.

The grass beneath his feet shimmered with tiny memories.

As he touched one blade...

He saw Orion planting the first sapling.

Another blade...

Showed Elara laughing beside the Child of Dreams.

Another...

Displayed the Forgotten Dream sitting alone beneath an empty sky.

Every blade of grass...

Contained an entire memory.

The First Garden remembered everything.

Not because it feared forgetting.

Because remembrance itself was an act of love.

The eldest Gardener gently knelt.

He pressed his hand against the soil.

"This garden has existed since before your universe."

"It has welcomed every Gardener."

"It has buried every Gardener."

Kael's expression changed.

"...Buried?"

The twelve exchanged quiet smiles.

The old man nodded.

"Of course."

"We all died."

Silence.

Kael stared at them.

"You..."

"But you're standing here."

"We are memories."

Another Gardener spoke.

"Not ghosts."

"Not souls."

"Memories lovingly preserved by the Garden."

Kael slowly understood.

Just as the World Tree preserved civilizations...

The First Garden preserved Gardeners.

Not as prisoners.

As honored stories.

The child carrying the lantern happily spun around.

"When someone remembers you..."

"...a little part of you keeps walking."

Kael's thoughts drifted toward Rowan.

Toward every companion he had lost.

Maybe...

Maybe they weren't truly gone either.

The eldest Gardener stood once more.

"Kael."

"Do you know why there are only twelve of us?"

Kael shook his head.

"No."

"There were once thirteen."

The atmosphere immediately changed.

Even Elara's smile disappeared.

The Child of Dreams quietly lowered its eyes.

The Forgotten Dream looked away.

Kael felt the sudden heaviness.

"What happened?"

No one answered immediately.

Finally...

The old woman whispered,

"He chose perfection."

Kael's heart skipped a beat.

"The Last Observer?"

She slowly shook her head.

"No."

"He existed before the Observer."

"He was..."

"Our brother."

The floating rivers suddenly slowed.

The flowers stopped blooming.

The stars dimmed.

The eldest Gardener sighed.

"He believed suffering proved we had failed."

"So he decided..."

"...to create a perfect garden."

Kael's mind immediately recalled the frozen world shown by the Last Observer.

"A world where nothing changes..."

The twelve nodded together.

"He succeeded."

"For a while."

Kael asked quietly,

"What happened?"

The old man holding the crystal shovel closed his eyes.

"The flowers stopped blooming."

"The rivers stopped flowing."

"The children stopped laughing."

"Nothing died."

"But..."

"...nothing truly lived."

Kael whispered,

"So he became..."

The eldest Gardener nodded.

"The first Gardener to abandon hope."

Silence filled the First Garden.

Then the child holding the lantern spoke in a voice barely louder than the wind.

"And now..."

"...he's coming home."

Kael frowned.

"What?"

Before anyone answered—

The entire First Garden trembled.

A deep crack echoed beneath the floating earth.

The stars overhead flickered.

One enormous blossom slowly closed.

Then another.

Then another.

The twelve Gardeners looked toward the horizon.

For the first time...

Fear appeared upon their faces.

Not fear for themselves.

Fear for Kael.

The eldest Gardener took a slow breath.

"It seems..."

"...he has finally found us."

Far beyond the endless fields of flowers...

A lone figure walked toward the First Garden.

He carried a Gardener's Key.

Unlike the others...

Its seven branches bore no flowers.

Only flawless crystal.

Nothing bloomed.

Nothing withered.

Nothing changed.

And as the silent figure drew closer...

Even the emerald light of Elara's spring began to fade.
