Chapter 278 - Chapter 278: The Seventh Bloom

The heartbeat echoed across the First Garden.

Steady.

Gentle.

Alive.

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

Unlike before, it no longer struggled to embrace every soul in existence.

Instead, it pulsed like a quiet invitation.

Not forcing hearts together.

Simply reminding them that they never had to remain alone.

The countless threads of light stretching across the heavens changed.

Before, they had all originated from the tiny heart.

Now...

They reached toward one another.

Some joined.

Some drifted apart.

Some intertwined before separating again.

Every bond was different.

Every connection was chosen.

The First Garden breathed once more.

The rivers resumed their song.

Flowers turned toward the warm light.

Birds returned to the emerald sky.

Kael slowly lowered his hands from the tiny heart.

His breathing was uneven.

His body trembled.

Drops of blood stained the emerald grass beneath his feet.

The Last Observer stepped beside him.

"...Your condition."

Kael smiled weakly.

"I've been better."

The Child of Dreams immediately rushed over.

"You dummy!"

It threw its tiny arms around him.

"You almost broke yourself!"

Kael laughed softly despite the pain.

"I know."

The child looked up with teary eyes.

"You always know!"

"That doesn't make it better!"

Everyone laughed.

Even Cassian.

Even Orion.

The laughter spread naturally through the Garden.

Not because danger had disappeared.

But because everyone was together.

For a brief moment...

The Garden simply felt like home.

...

The tiny heart floated gently back into Kael's hands.

Its transparent shell no longer showed cracks.

Instead...

Tiny emerald veins had appeared within it.

Like the first roots of a seed beginning to grow.

The little voice echoed inside Kael's mind.

"...Thank you."

"You don't have to thank me."

"I do."

"Why?"

"Because..."

The tiny heartbeat pulsed happily.

"...you stayed."

Kael smiled.

"I said I would."

The tiny voice became thoughtful.

"...Is that what a promise is?"

Before Kael could answer, Elias quietly spoke.

"A promise..."

The elderly Gardener stepped closer.

"...isn't words."

"It is the distance someone is willing to walk for another."

The Child of Dreams nodded vigorously.

"Exactly!"

"I promised I'd never leave my brother."

It squeezed the Forgotten Dream's hand tighter.

"And I didn't."

The Forgotten Dream looked at their joined hands.

For countless ages...

It had believed it was born to stand alone.

Now...

It realized loneliness had never been its destiny.

Only its misunderstanding.

...

Suddenly, the Gardener's Key vibrated.

Not violently.

Gently.

The six completed branches shimmered with silver, gold, emerald, crystal, memory, and possibility.

At their center...

The seventh blossom continued unfolding.

Every petal opened painfully slowly.

As though it refused to bloom before its time.

Elara looked at it quietly.

"It finally understands."

Kael frowned.

"What understands?"

"The flower."

She smiled warmly.

"It isn't blooming because you've become stronger."

"It is blooming because you've learned something."

Cassian nodded.

"Power opens gates."

"Wisdom opens flowers."

The Last Observer silently repeated those words.

"...Power opens gates."

"...Wisdom opens flowers."

It looked toward Kael.

"...Then strength was never the destination."

"No."

Kael answered.

"It was only the road."

The ancient being lowered its head.

"...Observation updated."

Everyone chuckled.

The Child of Dreams whispered loudly enough for everyone to hear,

"I think it's becoming adorable."

The Last Observer blinked.

"...Define adorable."

The Child burst into laughter.

"Oh no."

"We have a lot to teach you."

Even the Watcher remained unusually quiet.

Its countless silver eyes no longer calculated endlessly.

Instead...

They simply watched.

Learning.

...

The First Garden suddenly trembled.

Not from an enemy.

From beneath.

Kael looked down.

The emerald grass began glowing.

One by one...

Ancient symbols emerged across the ground.

None resembled any language Kael knew.

Yet somehow...

He understood them.

Not with his mind.

With his heart.

Welcome Home.

The words appeared throughout the Garden.

Millions of glowing roots rose gently from beneath the earth.

Each root carried memories.

One showed Orion planting the very first sapling.

Another showed Elara teaching children to care for flowers.

Another revealed Cassian laughing freely before grief had hollowed him.

Another showed the Child of Dreams and the Forgotten Dream running together beneath an endless sky before they had chosen different paths.

Countless memories.

None hidden.

None forgotten.

The Garden wasn't displaying history.

It was celebrating it.

The twelve Gardeners smiled as they watched forgotten moments return.

Elias wiped away a tear.

"I thought..."

"...I'd never see these again."

The Keeper gently placed a hand on his shoulder.

"The Garden remembered."

"It always remembers."

"No."

Kael quietly corrected him.

Everyone turned toward him.

"It didn't remember because it had to."

"It remembered because it loved you."

Silence settled over the Garden.

Elara's smile brightened.

"Exactly."

"Love is memory that chooses not to fade."

Those words spread through the glowing roots.

Every memory shone brighter.

The Garden itself seemed happier.

...

Then...

The heartbeat inside Kael's hands quickened.

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

The tiny voice returned.

"...Kael."

"What is it?"

"...Someone is crying."

His expression changed.

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"It feels..."

"...far away."

"...Very far."

The Child of Dreams looked toward the endless horizon.

"I feel it too."

The Forgotten Dream nodded.

"...A lonely heart."

Cassian closed his eyes.

"It isn't inside the Garden."

Elara's smile faded.

"No."

"It comes from the world."

Kael looked toward the emerald gate.

Beyond it...

Lay his home.

The kingdoms.

The villages.

The people who knew nothing of the First Garden.

Aren.

Lyra.

Selene.

Old Rowan.

The World Tree.

The tiny heartbeat trembled again.

"...Someone..."

"...doesn't believe tomorrow will come."

Kael felt his own heart tighten.

The Garden had shown him ancient truths.

It had taught him about dreams.

Memories.

Hope.

Change.

Friendship.

But beyond these sacred realms...

Ordinary people were still living ordinary lives.

Still suffering.

Still waiting.

Still hoping.

The Maker had not entrusted him with a new life so he could remain in paradise.

He had entrusted him with it...

So he could carry it back.

Elias stepped forward.

"You've realized it."

Kael nodded slowly.

"My journey here..."

"...was never the destination."

"No."

Orion smiled proudly.

"It was your preparation."

The Child of Dreams hugged Kael one last time.

"You'll visit, right?"

Kael laughed.

"If you'll have me."

The child looked horrified.

"If we'll have you?"

"This is your home too!"

The Forgotten Dream gave a small smile.

"...Come back."

Cassian extended the living flower that had nearly withered.

Now...

A tiny bud had appeared beside it.

"For the road."

Kael accepted it carefully.

"I'll take good care of it."

"I know."

Elara walked beside the emerald gate.

When she opened it...

The distant silhouette of the World Tree appeared once more.

Its branches stretched across countless skies.

Its leaves shimmered like rivers of emerald light.

Far below...

Kael could see tiny figures waiting beneath its roots.

Three of them stood together.

One carried a sword.

One held a staff.

One embraced a book.

Even from this impossible distance...

He recognized them instantly.

Aren.

Lyra.

Selene.

The three looked toward the World Tree at the exact same moment.

As if they had sensed him.

The tiny heartbeat whispered happily,

"...We're going home."

Behind Kael, the seven-petaled blossom upon the Gardener's Key finally opened another layer.

At its center...

A single radiant seed formed.

Not yet ready to fall.

Not yet ready to grow.

Waiting.

Just like Kael.

For the next season of his journey.
