Chapter 282 - Chapter 282: Those Who Grew Without Him

The meeting beneath the World Tree did not end quickly.

It lasted until sunset.

Then through the evening.

And long after the first stars appeared above the branches, representatives from kingdoms, tribes, cities, and scattered settlements continued arguing over Kael's proposal.

That was exactly what Kael wanted.

He didn't silence them.

He didn't demand obedience.

He listened.

Some wanted military protection before offering anything in return.

Others demanded control over roads passing through their territories.

The dwarven representatives refused to provide weapons unless their merchants received safe passage.

Several human nobles immediately objected.

The elves argued that the remaining forests could not support unrestricted settlement.

The beastkin clans demanded recognition of lands that had been taken from them generations ago.

Old hatred surfaced.

Old wounds reopened.

At one point, two representatives nearly drew weapons.

Aren stepped between them.

He didn't draw his own sword.

He simply looked at both men.

That was enough.

"Sit."

Both sat.

Kael watched from beneath the World Tree.

Months ago, Aren would probably have shouted.

Years ago...

He might have punched one of them.

Now he needed only one word.

Kael smiled faintly.

He truly had missed a lot.

Eventually, Rowan ended the meeting.

"Enough."

Several representatives immediately protested.

"We haven't reached an agreement."

"Good."

Rowan leaned upon his walking stick.

"That means you'll have something to discuss tomorrow."

"But—"

"Go eat."

The old man pointed toward the village.

"People become particularly stupid when they're hungry."

Aren nodded seriously.

"He's right."

Lyra looked at him.

"You're agreeing because there's food."

"That doesn't make him wrong."

The tension finally broke.

Quiet laughter spread through the gathering.

Slowly, everyone dispersed.

Kael remained beneath the Tree.

He watched hundreds of campfires appear beyond the enormous roots.

Different races gathered around them.

Some remained separate.

Others cautiously shared food.

Children had fewer problems.

Human children were already chasing beastkin children between tents while two young dwarves argued with an elf over the rules of some game.

Kael watched them for several moments.

Maybe adults made unity more complicated than it needed to be.

Aren appeared beside him.

"You're staring again."

"I've been gone for months."

"You're going to keep using that excuse?"

"Probably."

Aren handed him a bowl.

Kael looked inside.

Soup.

He slowly raised his eyes.

Aren's expression darkened.

"Say one word."

Kael took a spoonful.

"It's good."

Aren relaxed.

"It better be."

They ate quietly.

Eventually, Kael spoke.

"Theron said you fought at Veyran."

Aren's spoon stopped.

The lightness disappeared.

"...Yeah."

"What happened?"

Aren looked toward the campfires.

For several seconds, Kael wondered whether he would answer.

Then Aren placed the bowl beside him.

"When you disappeared, things became worse."

"The Watcher's erasures accelerated."

"Entire roads vanished from maps."

"People forgot villages while standing inside them."

Kael remained silent.

"The Empire sent armies to stabilize the western territories."

"I went with them."

"Why?"

Aren gave him a tired smile.

"Because you weren't there."

The words struck harder than Kael expected.

Aren continued before he could respond.

"Someone had to make decisions."

"I hated it."

"I kept thinking..."

"What would Kael do?"

He laughed quietly.

"Then I realized that was stupid."

Kael raised an eyebrow.

"Thanks."

"You weren't there."

Aren looked directly at him.

"And the people following me didn't need Kael."

"They needed me."

Silence.

"So I stopped trying to fight like you."

He touched the silver insignia on his sword.

"I became captain at Veyran."

"Captain?"

"For about three days."

"What happened after three days?"

"My commander died."

Kael's smile disappeared.

Aren's expression remained calm.

Not emotionless.

Simply accepting.

"Then I became commander."

Kael stared at him.

"How many people?"

"At first?"

"Two hundred."

"And later?"

Aren looked toward the fire.

"Eleven thousand."

Kael stopped breathing for a moment.

The Aren he remembered had once struggled to coordinate four people during an academy exercise.

Now...

Eleven thousand soldiers had followed him.

"We held Veyran for seventeen days."

"Against what?"

Aren's eyes darkened.

"Things that had been erased."

Kael frowned.

"They came back?"

"Not exactly."

"They didn't have names anymore."

"No memories."

"No fear."

"They just kept walking."

Kael remembered the black regions on the map.

Perhaps the current anomalies had begun earlier than anyone realized.

"How did you stop them?"

Aren's hand rested upon his sword.

"I awakened."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

Aren stood.

"Come."

"Where?"

"You wanted to know how much we've changed."

A small smile appeared.

"So I'll show you."

...

They traveled beyond the outer roots.

Lyra and Selene followed.

Kael hadn't invited them.

Apparently, that didn't matter.

The heartbeat floated happily behind everyone.

"...Adventure?"

"No."

Aren answered.

"...Training?"

"Maybe."

"...Danger?"

"Hopefully not."

The heartbeat brightened.

"...Adventure."

Aren sighed.

"I shouldn't have answered."

They eventually reached an abandoned training field several kilometers from the village.

Old stone targets stood across the clearing.

Aren walked toward the center.

Then removed his sword.

Kael immediately felt something change.

Not mana.

Pressure.

The air around Aren became strangely heavy.

Lyra created a barrier around the field without being asked.

Kael glanced at her.

"Necessary?"

"Yes."

Aren raised his sword.

There was no brilliant aura.

No enormous explosion of power.

He simply breathed.

Once.

The world became quiet.

Kael's eyes widened.

For the briefest moment...

He felt thousands of people standing behind Aren.

Soldiers.

Men and women.

Some alive.

Some dead.

Their presence wasn't supernatural.

It was something deeper.

Responsibility.

Aren stepped forward.

One strike.

Nothing happened.

Kael frowned.

Then—

A mountain several kilometers away trembled.

A perfectly straight line appeared across its upper surface.

The peak slowly slid sideways.

BOOM!

The impact shook the earth.

The heartbeat stopped moving.

"...Oh."

Kael stared.

Aren casually sheathed his sword.

"That's new."

Kael slowly looked at him.

"You cut a mountain."

"Only the top."

"That doesn't make it normal."

Aren shrugged.

"It's called the Thousand-Burden Sword."

Kael frowned.

"Thousand Burden?"

"The more lives I genuinely accept responsibility for..."

"...the heavier my sword becomes."

"Not physically."

He touched his chest.

"Here."

Kael understood immediately.

Aren's strength had grown from leadership.

Not killing.

Not training.

Responsibility.

Kael smiled.

"It suits you."

Aren looked slightly embarrassed.

"Yeah."

Lyra stepped forward.

"My turn."

Aren immediately moved backward.

Far backward.

Kael noticed.

"...Why are you going that far?"

"Experience."

Lyra ignored him.

She raised one hand.

No chant.

No staff.

No magic circle.

Nothing.

Kael waited.

"...Lyra?"

"Look up."

He did.

His mouth slowly opened.

Above them...

The stars were moving.

No.

Not the stars.

Mana.

An unimaginable quantity of mana had gathered across the entire sky, forming a massive structure visible only because Kael's perception had changed.

Millions of individual spell formations overlapped perfectly.

Fire.

Water.

Wind.

Earth.

Light.

Space.

Elements Kael couldn't even identify.

All connected.

All controlled by one person.

Lyra lowered one finger.

Every spell vanished.

Kael stared at her.

"What..."

Lyra smiled proudly.

"The Infinite Formula."

Selene adjusted her glasses.

"She named it herself."

"It is an accurate name."

"It's dramatic."

"Accuracy can be dramatic."

Kael laughed.

"How did you do that?"

Lyra's expression softened.

"I stopped treating magic like spells."

She looked toward the stars.

"Magic is language."

"Spells are merely sentences."

"So..."

"I learned grammar."

Kael stared at her.

Lyra shrugged.

"Then I started writing my own language."

The princess who had once been a gifted young magician at the academy...

Had become something else entirely.

Not merely stronger.

She had changed the foundation of how she understood magic.

Kael turned toward Selene.

She immediately stepped backward.

"No."

He smiled.

"Your turn."

"I don't destroy mountains."

"Neither does Lyra."

Aren pointed upward.

"She probably can."

Lyra nodded.

"I can."

Selene sighed.

Then removed the enormous book from her waist.

She opened it.

Thousands of names covered the pages.

Kael felt the World Tree respond from kilometers away.

Every leaf rustled.

Selene whispered one word.

"Remember."

The world changed.

Figures appeared across the field.

Thousands of them.

People Kael had never seen.

Soldiers.

Farmers.

Children.

Healers.

Teachers.

Entire families.

Not ghosts.

Memories.

Preserved so perfectly that Kael could hear their laughter.

One elderly soldier looked toward Aren.

He smiled.

Aren froze.

"...Captain Darius."

The memory raised his hand in salute.

Aren's eyes immediately filled with tears.

Selene gently closed the book.

The figures disappeared.

Silence.

Kael finally understood.

Aren carried the responsibility of the living.

Lyra carried the language of magic.

Selene...

Carried those the world had lost.

She had become a living archive.

Not of kings.

Of people.

Kael looked at his three friends.

Months ago, he had feared leaving them behind.

Now...

He realized something.

They had never been behind him.

They had simply been walking different roads.

The heartbeat floated between the four of them.

"...Strong."

Kael nodded.

"Very."

The little light circled them happily.

"...Family?"

No one answered immediately.

Then Aren smiled.

"Yeah."

Lyra nodded.

Selene held her book against her chest.

Kael looked toward the distant World Tree.

Four roads.

Four different kinds of strength.

All leading toward the same tomorrow.

Then Selene suddenly stiffened.

Her book opened by itself.

Pages began turning rapidly.

One.

Ten.

Hundreds.

Thousands.

Names flashed past.

Then every page stopped.

A single blank sheet appeared.

Black ink slowly formed across it.

Kael stepped closer.

"What is that?"

Selene's face had gone pale.

"I don't know."

Words continued appearing.

One sentence.

Written by no human hand.

**THE FIRST CITY HAS RETURNED.**

Lyra's expression changed.

Aren gripped his sword.

Kael stared at the page.

Another sentence appeared beneath the first.

**POPULATION: 1,204,881.**

Then—

**STATUS: ALL DECEASED.**

Silence.

The heartbeat dimmed.

Selene whispered,

"Kael..."

The final line appeared.

**THEY ARE WALKING HOME.**

Far beyond the horizon...

A bell began ringing.

A bell that had not existed in the world...

For more than three thousand years.
