Chapter 18 - CHAPTER EIGHTEEN: The Man Behind The Monster

Isabella had learned something about Luca.

The world saw the monster first.

They saw the cold eyes, the expensive suits, the power that followed him everywhere. They saw a man who could walk into a room and silence everyone without saying a word.

But she had seen something else.

She had seen the man who stayed awake at night because he was afraid someone would hurt her.

She had seen the man who carried old wounds beneath a perfect appearance.

She had seen Luca.

And somehow, that was more dangerous than anything else.

Because falling for a powerful man was one thing.

Falling for a broken one was something completely different.

The morning felt unusually quiet.

Too quiet.

Isabella stood in front of the mirror, studying herself. She barely recognized the woman staring back at her.

A few weeks ago, she had been certain she knew exactly who she was. She was independent. Careful. Someone who planned everything before making a decision.

Then Luca entered her life.

And suddenly, everything became unpredictable.

He challenged her.

He frustrated her.

He fascinated her.

She hated how much she wanted to understand him.

She hated how much she wanted to see behind every wall he built.

But most of all, she hated how much she cared.

A knock sounded at the door.

"Come in."

Luca entered.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

There was something different about him today.

He looked exhausted.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like he had spent the entire night fighting battles nobody else knew existed.

"You didn't sleep," Isabella said.

Luca looked at her.

"You're becoming too observant."

"You're becoming too easy to read."

A slight smile appeared.

"Careful. Nobody talks to me like that."

"Maybe nobody knows you well enough."

The smile faded, replaced by something deeper.

Because that was the truth.

Most people knew Luca Moretti.

Very few knew the man underneath.

He walked toward her slowly.

"I need you to promise me something."

Isabella immediately became cautious.

"What?"

"If something happens, you trust me."

She frowned.

"That sounds suspicious."

"It's serious."

"So is asking someone to blindly trust you."

Luca looked away briefly.

Then back at her.

"You're right."

The admission surprised her.

"I'm not asking you to stop thinking. I'm not asking you to ignore your instincts."

His voice lowered.

"I'm asking you to remember that everything I do is because I'm trying to keep you alive."

The seriousness in his eyes made her chest tighten.

She reached for his hand.

"And I need you to remember something too."

"What?"

"I'm not something you have to hide away."

Luca stared at her.

"You don't understand what you mean to people like them."

"No."

She stepped closer.

"But I understand what I mean to you."

The silence between them was intense.

Because neither of them needed to say the words.

They both knew.

Something had changed.

The challenge that started everything had become something neither of them expected.

It wasn't just attraction anymore.

It wasn't just curiosity.

It was attachment.

The kind that scared people like Luca.

Because Luca knew how to handle enemies.

He knew how to handle betrayal.

He knew how to handle war.

But he didn't know how to handle someone becoming his weakness.

His phone rang.

The moment he saw the name, his expression changed.

Marco.

He answered immediately.

"What happened?"

Isabella watched his face carefully.

The longer he listened, the darker his expression became.

When he ended the call, he was silent.

"What is it?"

Luca hesitated.

And that alone told her it was serious.

"They found the person who sent the messages."

Her heartbeat increased.

"Who?"

Luca looked at her.

"That's the problem."

"Why?"

"Because it's someone who should be impossible."

A cold feeling moved through her.

"Who?"

Luca walked toward the table and picked up a file.

Inside was a photograph.

A woman.

Isabella looked at it.

And immediately understood.

Sofia.

But older.

Different.

Alive.

Her breath caught.

"No…"

Luca's face was unreadable.

"Sofia is alive."

The words changed everything.

For five years, Luca believed she was gone.

For five years, he carried guilt over losing her.

And now she was back.

Isabella looked at Luca carefully.

She expected happiness.

Relief.

Something.

But what she saw was confusion.

Fear.

Pain.

Because sometimes the return of a ghost was worse than losing one.

"What does she want?" Isabella asked.

Luca didn't answer.

Because deep down, he already knew.

The past had returned.

And it had not returned peacefully.

That evening, Luca took Isabella to a private location away from the city.

A place where nobody knew they were.

A place where he could finally breathe.

The house was quiet, surrounded by trees and darkness.

For once, there were no meetings.

No threats.

No people demanding something from him.

Just them.

Isabella stood near the fireplace while Luca watched her.

"What?"

He shook his head.

"Nothing."

"You're staring."

"I'm trying to understand you."

She smiled slightly.

"That's funny. I've been trying to understand you for weeks."

"And have you succeeded?"

She thought about it.

"No."

A small laugh escaped him.

"But I'm getting closer."

Luca looked down.

"I don't know what happens next."

That sentence was rare coming from him.

Because Luca always knew what came next.

But not anymore.

Not with her.

Isabella moved closer.

"Maybe that's okay."

"You really believe that?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because not everything has to be controlled."

For a moment, Luca simply looked at her.

Then he pulled her into his arms.

Not because he wanted to possess her.

Not because he wanted to prove anything.

Because he needed a reminder that something good still existed in his life.

And Isabella understood.

Behind the powerful name.

Behind the dangerous reputation.

Behind the darkness.

There was still a man who wanted to be loved.

But neither of them knew that Sofia's return was only the beginning.

Because the biggest secret had not been revealed yet.

Sofia had not returned to destroy Luca.

She had returned because she knew the truth.

A truth that could destroy everything Luca had built.

A truth about his father.

A truth about the empire.

And a truth about Isabella.
