Chapter 1 - CHAPTER ONE: THE UNEXPECTED MEETING

Amara hurried through the crowded street, coffee in hand, hoping not to be late for work again – rent was overdue, and her boss was on her case . She weaved past pedestrians, her mind racing with thoughts of the meeting she had scheduled for that morning. As she approached the office building, she took a quick sip of her coffee, feeling the bitter taste jolt her awake.

Just as she was about to enter the lobby, a tall, dark figure emerged from the crowd, almost colliding with her . Ethan's tailored suit and piercing gaze made heads turn as he walked in, exuding confidence and power . Amara's eyes met his for a split second, and she felt a flutter in her chest – who was this guy?

Her distraction proved costly; she stumbled on the steps, and her coffee slipped from her grasp, spilling slightly on Ethan's shiny shoe . "Oh no! I'm so sorry!" she exclaimed, mortified. People around them paused, staring at the awkward scene.

Ethan looked down at the stain, then up at Amara with a calm smile. "It's alright," he said, his voice low and smooth, "accidents happen." He pulled out a handkerchief and began dabbing at the spot, his movements economical and precise . Amara watched, transfixed, as he worked – who was this composed, put-together guy?

"It's really okay," he repeated, catching her gaze. "I'm Ethan Harrington." He extended a hand, and Amara took it, feeling a spark of electricity at the touch . "Amara Okoro," she mumbled, releasing his hand quickly.

As they parted ways, Amara couldn't shake the feeling that this chance encounter would change her life . "Who is this guy? And why do I feel my heart race?" she wondered, stepping into the elevator. Ethan, meanwhile, watched her go, a thoughtful look on his face. "There's something unusual about her… intriguing" .

Tobi waved at Amara in the café, giving a knowing smile . "Hey, Mara! Morning! Who was that?" he asked, nodding toward the lobby. Amara shrugged, trying to play it cool. "Just some guy. I spilled coffee on him." Tobi raised an eyebrow. "Looks like he's interested ."

Ethan glanced at her as she left, determined to know more . He turned to his assistant. "Find out who that young woman is. Amara Okoro."

As Amara settled into her desk, her phone buzzed with a notification – a message from an unknown number : "Coffee's on me. – E.H." Attached was a picture of a coffee cup with a smiley face drawn on the foam . Amara's heart skipped a beat. What was this?!

Tobi strolled over, phone in hand. "Who's it from?" he asked, curiosity piqued . Amara showed him the message, and Tobi whistled. "E.H… Ethan Harrington? As in the billionaire Ethan Harrington?!"

Amara's eyes widened. "Billionaire?! No way!" Her mind spun with possibilities as she typed a quick reply: "Thanks. But why?"

The response came seconds later: "Let's discuss over lunch."

Amara's heart raced. Was this a date?

The day flew by in a blur. At lunch, Amara found herself walking toward the café Ethan had suggested, nerves jittering like crazy . What was she getting into?

As she pushed open the door, she saw him – suit jacket off, sleeves rolled up, typing on his phone . He looked up, caught her gaze, and smiled . "Hey."

"Hey," she replied, trying to sound casual.

Ethan closed his laptop. "Glade you could make it."

The waiter came over. "Usual, Mr. Harrington?" Ethan nodded .

As they sipped coffee, Ethan leaned in. "I wanted to apologize again for the shoe." Amara laughed. "It was my fault."

Ethan's gaze locked onto hers. "Actually… I'm glad it happened."

Amara's pulse jumped. "Why?"

Ethan leaned closer, voice dropping low. "You're different. You don't see me like everyone else does – like I'm some billionaire to impress."

The air thickened. Amara felt something spark …

Ethan's eyes cr crled into hers. "I like that."

Her heart fluttered. "I… I don't know what to say."

Ethan smiled softly. "Say you'll have dinner with me tonight."

Amara's breath caught. "I… okay."

The waiter brought their food. As they ate, their legs brushed under the table. Amara didn't move away .

The conversation flowed – they talked about books, music, dreams. Amara found herself laughing more than she had in months.

As they finished, Ethan reached out, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear . "I like you, Amara."

Her heart soared. "I like you too."

Suddenly, Ethan's phone buzzed, breaking the moment . He glanced at it, frowning. "I have to take this. Excuse me."

As he stepped out, Amara exhaled. What just happened?!

Ethan returned, looking serious . "Sorry, Amara. Something urgent came up."

Amara nodded, trying to hide her disappointment . "It's okay. I should get back to work."

Ethan walked her out, stopping at the curb. "I'll drive you."

"No, it's fine—"

Ethan smiled softly. "I insist."

As he pulled up in a sleek black car, Amara's phone buzzed again: "See you soon."

Ethan opened the door. "Get in."

Amara hesitated… then slid in .

The car zoomed into traffic. Ethan turned to her, eyes intense. "I don't usually do this. But… I want to see you again. Soon."

Amara's heart soared …

And then… his phone buzzed AGAIN. Ethan's expression turned grim . "Wait." He answered, listening intently…

Amara felt a shiver. What now?!

Ethan hung up, looking troubled . "Amara… something's come up. I have to go. But…" He leaned in, his face inches from hers . "This isn't over."

The car stopped at her apartment. Amara got out, dazed…

As she watched the car disappear into traffic, her phone buzzed once more: "Tonight. 8 PM. My place. Don't be late ."

Amara's heart raced… what had she gotten into?!

She felt a rush of excitement and fear. What was Ethan hiding? And why did she feel like she was falling for him?

The street was quiet now, but Amara's heart was still racing. She took a deep breath, trying to process everything. The coffee spill, the lunch, the dinner invitation… it was all so sudden.

But one thing was clear – she wanted to see him again.

As she turned to go inside, she caught a glimpse of a figure watching her from the shadows. A shiver ran down her spine. Who was that?!
