Chapter 21 - Invalid Rankings and The Seven Great Geniuses

Kael walked at an unhurried pace along the dimly lit pavement that led toward the Aetherion Spire dormitory, his steps steady as he passed beneath the tall archways and through the quiet corridors that gradually emptied of movement the deeper he went, until the distant noise of the academy faded into something indistinct behind him.

By the time he reached his room and pushed the door open, the silence had already settled in around him, but it did nothing to ease the tension sitting beneath his composure.

At a glance, there was nothing visibly wrong with him, his still posture remained straight, his expression controlled as always but the stillness in his eyes lingered a second too long, betraying the fact that his thoughts had not been as orderly as he would have preferred.

I didn't even try to stand out… and somehow I still ended up here.

The thought weighted more than he expected, pulling a quiet breath from him as he lifted a hand and ran it through his hair before moving further into the room.

The space was simple, almost deliberately so, with only the essentials arranged neatly in a way that left no room for distraction, and as his gaze moved across it, taking in the untouched bed, the desk, the faint glow of runic lines embedded into the walls, there was a brief moment where the stillness pressed in rather than calmed.

Darius wasn't there.

Of course he wasn't, he had mentioned something earlier about a class within the Citadel division but the absence still registered in a way Kael didn't dwell on, though it left the room feeling quieter than usual.

Kael exhaled slowly and stepped toward the terrace, pushing the door open before stepping out onto the balcony where the air carried a faint coolness, the kind that usually helped settle his thoughts.

He lowered himself into the chair without urgency, leaning back slightly as he let out a long breath that felt more like an attempt to release something that refused to properly leave.

So much for keeping a low profile.

His fingers tapped lightly against the armrest, not out of restlessness, but as if grounding the thought in something tangible.

I spent all that time making sure I didn't draw unnecessary attention, keeping things on a low, avoiding anything that would make people look twice… and now a single ranking list throws all of that out like it never mattered.

His jaw tightened faintly before easing again.

And it's not even about being high-ranked… even being placed at all is enough.

That part was what bothered him more than he initially admitted to himself.

Because being noticed or truly seen—inside a place like this means one would never remain neutral.

If it was just the other students, it wouldn't matter… but it's not.

His gaze drifted outward across the academy grounds, though he wasn't really looking at anything in particular.

Those seven… if even half of what people say about them is true, then they're not the kind of people who ignore things that interfere with their position… especially not early on when everything is still unstable.

And if any of them turn out to be the kind who can't tolerate being placed beneath someone they don't acknowledge… then this isn't just attention anymore, it becomes a problem.

A quiet scoff left him, though there was no humor in it.

I was trying to avoid exactly this kind of situation.

His fingers curled slightly before relaxing again.

So what now… do I keep pretending this doesn't matter and wait for it to come to me, or do I start moving before someone else decides to make the first move?

He thought not because he lacked the ability to decide, but because every option came with consequences he couldn't fully measure yet.

For a moment, he closed his eyes, drawing in a slow breath, as he tried to settle his thoughts process.

Panicking over it won't change anything.

If attention is already there, then avoiding it blindly just makes me predictable… and predictable is the last thing I want to be in a place like this.

His eyes opened again, calmer now, though the weight of the situation hadn't disappeared—it had simply shifted into something more controlled.

Then I will have to adapt.

The decision wasn't dramatic, nor was it final in the sense of locking him into a single path, but it was enough to steady the direction of his thoughts.

If they're going to watch, then I decide what they see… and if they're going to act, then I make sure I'm not the one caught reacting too late.

The tension in his shoulders eased slightly after that, not gone, but no longer pressing as heavily as before.

Without wasting further time, he straightened and adjusted his posture, allowing his breathing to settle into a steady rhythm as he shifted his focus inward.

A faint glow began to emerge beneath his skin, thin streams of light tracing along his veins as energy circulated through him with controlled precision, the movement steady rather than explosive, as if guided by familiarity rather than force.

If I'm going to be dragged into this, then the least I can do is make sure I'm not the weakest piece on the board.

The thought lingered quietly as the flow of energy deepened, his awareness narrowing, not in escape, but in preparation.

The morning arrived the same as the countless ones before it. However, this morning seems a bit more special than usual.

Students usually have to first attend their specialized schools classes, before any other classes. This time around, all students seems to be specifically moving towards a grand majestic hall.

"Mei Mei, I'm nervous what is it that demands such a grand announcement from the vice principal " a brown haired boy turned to the girl at his side rubbing his shoulders as if he got chills.

"Jake stop being a whimp. It's not like the vice principal is a two headed gaint that is going to eat us all." The girl rolled her eyes as she admonish him.

"Either way, it seems to be a very important announcement, and I'm sure it has to do with our final assessment before our holidays. Afterall it has been over six months since our admission into the academy, and judging from the acedemy curriculum we have to take two assessment before going on a vacation."

"Yeah I think you are right." Jake rubbed his chin with a blank expression on his face. Suddenly his expression light up,"I heard the seven great geniuses would be showing up today, it seems the academy is finally going to get interesting"

"Of course it will, since the seven great geniuses are finally showing up. Most importantly, I get to finally meet my ice prince in person, Lirien Ashveil." Mei replied excitedly with a dreamy look in her eyes.

"Your ice prince was ranked eleventh, despite being acclaimed as the strongest of the seven" Jake burst laughing as he told the most ridiculous joke of his laugh.

However he was quickly shut down by the death glare from Mei.

"Hmph! Who would believe that sham rankings? Anyways since they are all coming I believe it would all be long before we know the true rankings" Mei scoffed as she said.

The words seems to carry an intense weight that seem to linger in the air. All around students seems to be having similar discussions.

Finally all the students arrived in the grand hall. The hall filled with students began to echo with their discussion, making it to become rowdy.

Suddenly the entire hall became silent—students turned their heads automatically towards as the hall's entrance.

Stepping into the hall were seven young people dressed academy standard uniform.

With the grand hall falling into a profound hush — the seven figures stepped through the wide entrance, their presence alone commanding the space like a sudden shift in atmospheric pressure.

They moved with unhurried grace, yet every step carried an unmistakable weight. No one needed an introduction; their identities had been whispered about since the first day of enrollment.

Leading them was a tall young man with icy-blue hair that seemed to catch and refract the hall's ambient light, his features sharp and aristocratic, eyes the color of frozen amethyst. Lirien Ashveil — the so-called Ice Prince — walked at the front, his expression cool and detached, a faint crystalline mist trailing faintly from his fingertips before dissipating into nothing. Despite the ranking list placing him at eleventh overall, the aura he exuded made the number feel like a cruel joke to many.

Beside him strode a girl with long crimson hair tied in a high ponytail, her golden eyes scanning the crowd with lazy confidence. Zara Flameweaver, ranked somewhere in the top tier among the seven, carried herself like a predator who had already decided the hunt was beneath her. A subtle flame-like shimmer danced along the edges of her uniform.

To her left was a quiet, scholarly-looking boy with an indifferent expression wearing dark-rimmed glasses and neatly combed black hair — Soren Quill.

The group continued: a broad-shouldered youth with bronze skin and a easy grin (most recognized him from rumors as the physically dominant one, often called the Titan's Heir—Thorne Ironfist),a extremely beautiful petite emerald-haired girl with silky skin whose eyes glowed with faint luminous moss-green light, and two others whose presences were equally distinct — one refined elegant presence, with unnaturally smooth pale and long silky black hair falling to the middle of his back partially tied with a purple ribbon that matches his bewitching purple eyes—Cassian Veil; The other with a slim athletic build crackling with barely restrained electric energy, his spiky plantinum blonde hair cracking with similar blue electric energy at the type, his face handsome and arrogant— Rael Thunderstrike.

They took their designated seats on the elevated platform at the front of the hall, reserved exclusively for them. The silence lingered a moment longer before the vice principal — a stern woman in flowing emerald robes — stepped forward, her voice amplified by subtle runic magic to reach every corner.

"Students of the Central Academy," she began, her tone measured yet carrying an undercurrent of gravity. "You have been summoned here because the academy has decided it is time to address the current state of your progress — and to make certain adjustments to the path ahead."

A ripple of murmurs threatened to rise, but she raised a hand and they died instantly.

"As you are all aware, the preliminary ranking list was released yesterday. While it was based on entrance evaluations, practical demonstrations, and initial class performances, it is by no means final. However…" she paused, letting the word hang, "certain patterns have already emerged that require our attention."

Her gaze swept across the sea of students before settling briefly on the seven seated behind her.

"Today marks the beginning of the Mid-Year Convergence. Over the next several weeks, you will participate in a series of team-based trials, individual challenges, and supervised expeditions into the outer Veil zones. Your performance in these events will heavily influence your final placement before the holiday break. More importantly…" her eyes narrowed.

"Elara Voss, Leopold Kress, and Kael Draven. Please step forward and join the seven at the platform."

She gestured toward the seven geniuses.

Without wasting much time Kael, Elara, and Leopold stepped forward into the platform, as they took the empty seats that seemed to have being reserved for them.

Although the seven geniuses creates a certain level of pressure that makes other students rever them, the trio did not loose out much in comparison.

Elara sat down as with a indifferent expression on her exquisite features, her blood red ruby like eye, in contrast to her unsual pale skin and silver hair made out like an exotic creature in the midst of a world that did not quite know where to place her—completely dominating in presence. Kress Leopold sat close to her — his hair dark blue and dark colored skin, along side an expressionless face, as if nothing in the world could get any reaction from him. Kael with his usual collected calmness sat lastly his presence much calmer and subtle than the others, however no one could hold his gaze due to his sanpaku dark eyes that seem like a endless devouring whirlpool.

Strangely enough when they all say there, no one seem to object among the crowd of students.

Not even a ripple of disgruntled noise.

They simply accepted as if it was meant to be.

These ten individuals all posses auras beyond their years.

"These ten have been granted provisional authority as Cadre Leaders. Each of them will select and mentor a small cadre of students — no more than ten per leader — who will receive specialized training, priority access to high-tier resources, and direct guidance. Selection is not optional for those chosen. Refusal will result in immediate disciplinary review." The vice principal continued.

The hall erupted into a storm of whispers, excitement, and barely concealed dread.

Mei Mei's eyes were practically sparkling as she stared at Lirien. Jake, beside her, looked far less enthusiastic, muttering something about "extra work."

Kael, seated on the platform, remained perfectly still, his expression neutral. But inside, the earlier tension from the night before returned with sharper edges.

Cadre Leaders. Mentorship. Direct visibility under the strongest students in the year.

This was exactly the kind of spotlight he had wanted to avoid.

His gaze drifted involuntarily across the platform. Lirien Ashveil's amethyst eyes were scanning the crowd slowly, methodically — as if already measuring every face for potential or threat.

For the briefest moment, those cold eyes seemed to pause in Kael's general direction.

Kael didn't flinch. He simply met the glance with the same controlled calm he had practiced for years.

If they're going to watch… then I decide what they see.

The vice principal continued, outlining the first selection process: each Cadre Leader would announce their criteria and begin private interviews starting tomorrow. Students could also submit voluntary petitions, but the final decision rested solely with the ten.

As the announcement wrapped up and the hall began to buzz with renewed energy, Kael rose with the rest of the students, his movements unhurried.

He simply could not understand the intention of the academy officials. They had placed the seven geniuses in unfavorable rankings, now they brought them on stage and made them mentors at the same time.

This publicly acknowledging their status the top geniuses along side their strength.

The underlyingly statement of these actions means that the rankings were without substance. It seems like what ever bargain or conflict the academy had with the seven great houses has been settled. For Kael it is clear as a day that him and the others placed on the top of the rankings seem to be chess pieces in other to achieve a broader goal.

Kael head hurts just thinking about all these.

However, whatever intention the academy has for doing this, such actions are decremental to Kael and the others. Since the rankings has been indirectly proved to invalid, then most people would want to question the strength and mentorship of Kael and the rest, especially Kael who had been keeping a low profile the most among the trio.

"It seems like keeping a low profile has now become a double edged sword" Kael chuckled derisively.

Anyways If one of them came for him, he would adapt.

If none did… he would still prepare.

Because whether he liked it or not, the board had been set.

And the pieces were already beginning to move.
